Especially in the corporate world where MS's browser lock-in strategy worked so well they still can't migrate from IE6
It also includes those who can upgrade to IE8 but can't get off XP, which includes many more corporations.
So, blame it on MS's interlocking lock-ins and IE thinking it;s the Highlander (there can be only one) which was driven by them welding IE to the OS trying to win the browser war.
AFAIK, SChannel has been part of the OS since Win2000, I think. It is also used by IIS.
Yea, IE uses the system SChannel library which has been considered part of the OS since Win2000. And yea, XP SP3 is a 10 years old OS with some parts being replaced with later parts that are still 6 years old, and this part is not one of the parts that was replaced. AES and SNI did not exist in 2001.
Well, looks like what is actually happening is they tried to convert to US-ASCII by using question marks to substitute for the 8-bit chars. Best-fit would be better here. BTW, it is easy to check if the encoding is already in UTF-8 before converting to UTF-8.
Of course, that happened back when now-legacy MBA CEOs that thought they could manage anything were common. Hopefully the flaws of them are more well-known now.
Any ideas on how to finally stop this mess completely? I bet the MBAs who were trained to control didn't help. Nor does "shareholder value". Any idea on how to finally fix all this?
Yea, the mess that is the incompatible ASCII extensions. There was the simple single-byte ones, and there was the double-byte CJK ones. Some of them even used the ASCII range for the trail byte to squeeze in more characters! Nowadays UTF-8 is recommended, which is an encoding of Unicode as a multi-byte ASCII extension.

Yea, MBAs that think that the way to "compete" is to merge to eliminate competition in that case, I think.
And SP2b and SP2c was very minor updates. SP2c for example was OEM-only and was related to the exhaustion of OEM product keys.

In the US, I wished that the SEC would allow tweeting material info to meet the requirements of Reg FD.
Me, I prefer to post non-anonymously but are well aware it is not always possible and some of the reasons why.
One nice thing about Reader X for me is when the browser plug-in is invoked, it displays a progress bar indicating the download of the PDF.

Yea I know! It is time to move away from "shareholder value" being defined as stock price. Even some public companies are doing so.
In fact, I think MS is worse.

And that is exactly what Google is trying to fix by the project. Did you see OP?
Yea, I discussed the issue of AACS being mandatory before.
It reminds me of the mess caused by both Google and telcos lobbying on net neutrality.

Perhaps most importantly, why would you EVER have a public web-accessible interface to generate codes on the fly?
Because they sent emails with a link to it passing an ID. The problem is that the ID is easily guessable.
I remember reading about how MS had to reduce prices of Vista in developing countries like China so it would be affordable.
TechCrunch is one site that already uses this.

So why not use 32-bit IE9?
Happens that I am 17 years old right now.
Indeed, I recently helped to install a PCI modem in a newer PC exactly for faxing.
