    Sugar is not a good example because that is something we cannot get domestically or from other first-world countries due to climate. Tariffs and duties are applied at a very granular level to deal with these kinds of issues.

    There are other aspects to rendering speed than the rending engine. They can still use their own JavaScript engine. The rest of the browser other than rending the actual pages still plays a big part.

    How are you going to compete when some guy in China can do your job for less than the US poverty level?

    The solution is tariffs on goods from or trade restrictions with countries that do not meet minimum human rights, worker pay, and environmental regulations.

    If we were smart we would increase the minimum wage and at the same time impose tariffs and regulations on importing goods from countries that do not meet minimum human rights, worker pay, and environmental standards. But nobody wants to take on China so we will not do it. So a minimum wage increase if passed at all will increase outsourcing enough to offset inflation contribution.

    Because everybody knows to whom you are referring when you say "The Pope".

    Nope. The news agencies try to report advertising-selling and ratings-boosting information, not accurate information.

    If you are installing Java 7, why would you need to keep 6? Do you have an example of something that works with 6 but not 7?

    How is it different from IE8 requiring that you uninstall IE7?

    No, but it is only happening where TW has competition. I have no other option for high-speed Internet. I live too far from the DSLAM for DSL. TW has raised my rates from $35/mo to $56/mo in the last decade without any increase in speed or reliability.

    If you set up a public WiFi network that only allows OpenVPN, all that means if the data is encrypted in your network. If somebody ignores certificate warnings and connects to a DoJ trap, you may still to have problems.

    If you do not trust your court system, do not do it.

    If an application is no longer available from play.google.com, he cannot download it to his next phone. If he downloaded an unrestricted APK from the author or f-droid, he can install it on his next phone.

    Even if the author abandoned an FOSS program, he can keep a copy of the apk and install it on whatever devices he wants to. If the author pulls an app from play.google.com, he is out of lock.

    For this reason I only use programs for which I can download an apk file for any device.

    Angry Birds is your example for user experience? How about making a damn phone call? No modern smartphone matches the Motorola dumb phone I had 10 years ago for reception.

    It is only a race to the bottom because with current carrier subsidies nobody expects their phone to last more than a year or two anyway. If the hardware companies want to compete on hardware quality/price, they need to stand up to the carriers. If they do not, it is their own fault.
