This is why it pays not to be a zealot. I mix Linux, OSX and Windows systems at home and work. I try to select and use software because it works, not because it's part of an ecosystem, and I try to do as much of the work myself, despite my poor coding skills. It's not perfect, but I think it's the best you can do these days without spending inordinate amounts of time hustling to protect every tiny last bit of data from becoming 'known' to the big corporations.
Do you have a link for that? The info I've read suggests otherwise. AFAIK, Flashbock blocks Flash completely before the page even loads, although this suggests a bypass is very easy.
Yes, because hijacking your DNS packets and injecting RST packets to interfere with bittorrent is comparable to putting millions of people in ovens and trying to conquer Eurasia......
Good point, although I think the result will be the same for both: failure.
I once got to cross the Atlantic as a kid. Not only did I get the best view ever, I was even able to impress my parents by naming all the constellations for them. It's sad to think most people nowadays won't even get to see a fraction of that.
Yeah, I almost never use facebook on my desktop anymore, the mobile version is much better. It would be nice if Slashdot had one that wasn't coded over ten years ago.
I'd imagine the iPhone, with it's 3.5" screen, would actually be pretty good to read books on.
It's not bad. I read "Eastern Standard Tribes" during my christmas vacation on my ipod touch, and it was remarkably pleasant. The book wasn't bad, either.
I like that products such as spybot search and destroy, and malware bytes are ten times more effective at taking care of that than any antivirus product out there...
That's because the nature of PC security has changed. Old school: Viruses to destroy computers. New school: Co-opt systems in order to sell a product or pimp out for botnet needs.
It's kind of refreshing if you ask me. Not to say current malware is a giant headache, but at least the days of you getting your HD wiped are pretty much behind us. There's just no money in it.
Yeah it is nice to be able to use my wife's 2nd gen ipod cable for my touch when I need to (and vice versa) I thought for sure that would be something Apple wouldn't do.
maybe it was the fact that apple changed their stance on different pricing models that really made the difference, and thus the record labels were correct......
just because apple did something, doesnt mean it was a golden decision and everyone else is wrong.
That's not what the GP meant. He wasn't talking about variable pricing, but the original digital distribution of music, which at the time, the record labels were awful fearful of. Back then, "mp3" was a dirty term at record labels, and other services were jokes. Apple basically showed not only the labels but other online music vendors how to do it right, and their huge financial success at it, as well as now being able to bargain with the labels to remove DRM, a concession which should be looked at with at least a certain amount of awe, shows they are right.
Are we supposed to be surprised that the leading OS vendor, who's had deep, intertwined relationships for decades with hardware makers is exploiting that hardware properly?
This is why we were chiding the conservatives for years. They had no problem with Bush and Cheney's (mis)use of executive privilege, no matter how many times we told them they'd be howling about it once a Dem got in office.
Bad policy is bad policy, no matter what side of the aisle you're on.
The local garage sale groups in my area do pretty well though. It's probably the only regular use I get out of Facebook these days.
Living in the tropics I can promise you from experience there's nothing fake about the weather forecast.
FWIW, my shitty little project site has no ads and will never see ads. Also, everything's under a CC license, so download and use away!
Thanks for the plug.

Browsing the web without a few browser mods is the only to surf these days anyway.
Yeah, that's what I came in here to say. It's 2009, even most $5/month hosts offer pretty good spam filtering.
That 5 bucks also gets you unlimited email accounts (or close enough), so don't be afraid to use them. Makes it easier to track spam and disable it.
You were free on the C64, no one could stop you from making applications
I wish that were true. The teachers were always kicking us out of the lab at the end of the school day!

The taggers have it right. Regular schlub, all kinds of dicsovery. RIAA, "we'll let you know what's going on when we feel like it."
Hmmm...gold-plated papyrus

Is 20 Celsius twice as hot as 10 Celsius? No. Twenty Kelvin, though, is twice as hot as ten.
I do believe that's completely wrong. Can somebody back me up on that or am I missing something?
Then Apple better get some work done. The most failure prone piece of software currently on my ipod touch is Safari.
Find me a geek that hasn't read Vonnegut.

that removing such-and-such post
One of the better features of Slashdot is that posts don't get removed, just moderated.

I'ld gladly take a job at a bank for 65k+ a year while I'm still in school
I thought cost of living in the US was cheap. I make a third that with much higher cost of living. I guess these are NY/LA numbers then?
But burn those goddamn pictures.
I understand your sentiment, but how you're going to dispose of pixels, I'll never know.

Honest question: where's the news here?
