    It is? I managed to save quite a bit of money (a few hundred) building my own computer rather than buying a pre-built one with nearly the same specs.

    From this we can infer that your hourly billable rate is vanishingly small. Sorry to hear it, man. Good luck finding better work.

    I'm not going to argue with you about quality, but am I the only person in the world who thinks that it's better to not have a physical disk? I hate the amount of space I have to spend on DVD case storage.

    (I know, I know, you still end up having to have a disk somewhere for backups. I'm just sayin')

    Riiiight. Because everyone knows that the most important thing is that code be small and efficient, and not, say, maintainable and easy to debug. Everyone knows that modern code is never buggy, so it can't possibly hurt to write it in machine language.

    Also, modern code never need to be ported, so yeah! 6502 Assembly Language for everyone!

    I didn't think the first Harry Potter movies were terribly good. But they were still better than whatever wandering, unfocused, and over-budget by several hundred million dollars monstrosity Gilliam would have unleashed upon the world.

    Gilliam is an extremely creative person. He'd be a great production designer.

    But he's a terrible director.

    That quip was spoken like someone who never built a multi-architecture binary under NeXTSTEP.
    The idea that the only thing standing in the way of producing and distributing a production quality application on multiple architectures is a build system or development environment is nothing short of idiocy.

    The idea that a thorough quality assurance cycle for such a project could be done in a week is nothing short of madness.

    Tools -- even good tools -- are not an adequate substitute for process.

    NeXT solved the multi-architecture binary problem many years ago. If Apple ever offered the OS on x86 again, you can bet that every software vendor would recompile their apps and have them available within a month. Most of them could do it in a week.
    Spoken like someone who has never had to actually deliver a production-quality software product in their life.

    Why run Linux on a Mac? I find that Linux has less to distract me from work.
    Yeah, by running Linux on the mac mini, you get to completely avoid the unnecessary distractions of audio, bluetooth, wireless networking, or modems. Plus the screen driver's flickering will keep you from being distracted by smooth, high-quality graphics, and the annoying, error-prone install procedure will prevent you from getting distracted by having software that works, or being distracted by a GUI that doesn't suck.

    Yeah, boy, what an incredible win.

    I think there's a strong argument that doing assembly and testing of your own hardware simply costs more (when you factor in man-hours) and simply leaves you with a less reliable product, with no recourse when things go bad. I've talked about this in detail before, at least in terms of building gaming PCs, but I believe the same arguments apply to professionally-targeted server hardware. Of course there are people who will disagree with me because "building your own server is fun." But fun isn't why businesses deploy machines, generally.

    If the people who built X designed a car, you'd have to start the engine by turning a crank, and accelerate by dangling more food to the hamster running in the flywheel attached to the driveshaft.

    Adapting to stupid, broken, and braindead things -- such as the X cut and paste lossage -- is itself stupid. Here's a nickel, kid. Go buy yourself a real window manager and toolkit.
