Our entire front end is ExtJS. This means MUCH EASIER porting a whole web app based (SIGH) on Grails to something less craptastic like Rails, Django, or anything else that is good at emitting JSON. It's not as easy to get started with... because you're starting with high-level widgets like controls, panels, and similar.
My wife and I forsook our 35mm for a Sony Digital8 camcorder. The benefits:
- Digital8/MiniDV so no generation loss when converting physical media formats
- Firewire port means instant accessibility to computer *or* a different dv camcorder (to help convert media!:)
- Never get a precious picture with a sneeze again! Single stepping through frames means getting the best possible shot. Always.
My son's website was built entirely from a Sony TRV 310 to B&W G3 Mac w/ PhotoDV. First gen Digital8 cam so... fair quality, but the new VX2000 will help with that.
Ruby freaking rocks. I wanted to use it as an apache module instead of php but had some compile problems. I think the libGD (for generating Jpeg/PNG programatically) errors were really scary.
I've got 2x 1U boxes from http://www.PenguinComputing.com at home and couldn't be happier. One of them has the PCI bridge installed which hosts an Aironet 802.11b card. It ipmasq's my internal network quite well out to the world.
the prices on penguincomputing stuff are coming down, I think the base level config is ~$1200. That should be close to a celeron 600 128 MB ram 10g HD 1 ethernet card.
Customer service was awesome and they threw in a bunch of extras (tux stuffed doll, pins, more I think).
The terms/conditions for any contract should be known up front. When I went through Speakeasy for DSL it was all there. Their site is easy to navigate.
I'm sorry to say but it sounds like you tried to default on your contract. Of course they're pissed, you're legally liable and IMO in the wrong.
I've had Speakeasy dialup (no DSL thx to baby bell) for over a year now and they rock.
Dammit man I feel for you. I have nightmares about this happening to my family constantly... but I have *no* earthly clue what it actually feels like.
And no one else ever will except you, which means I guess you've got to be your own strongest source of support. Man, that's so hard, it's gotta be so hard.
If you're looking for sources of light, maybe later on down the road you'll be able to change someone's life, to take these feelings and turn them into honest I've-been-there empathy. Take someone else who's known sadness beyond pets, sports, divorce, etc. Take them and actually be able to touch them and make a difference.
I wish I could do something to actually help. Keep fighting man, and don't be afraid to just stop, drop, and cry. Don't keep it inside.
I was thinking noleche was a secret French message instead of a secret Spanish message. Don't speak Spanish so I defer to you on the he's not licking theorem

I am the only human in my own little IT firm, that makes a 1 in 1 ratio...
math bzzt. That should read 1 IT type to 0 non-IT types in your company.
agreed, this was just buzzwords being flung with mad abandon.

sure, adding a terminal "g" makes orangutan sound better, but it's wrong.
a) what's this obsession with celebrity programmers? much good did it to Transmeta.
b) as an ex-aol programmer, the celebrities are mostly unknown. It's the best instant messaging infrastructure on the planet. No one else comes close.
c) aol has a few awesome managers. they are responsible for making b) happen.
You need version control. Makes the recovery a no-op. The cvs client is also a server (see the "import" command).
hear hear!
You mean an iMac?

Thanks for the amazing first edition. It sits next to TCP/IP Illustrated in the highest place of bookshelf honor.
Off to beg for funds to pay for the 2nd edition... :)

I was shocked. Shiny tabs, modal dialogs are SHEETS now (wuhooo!), and lots of general Aqua-ification. WAY TO GO Mac Moz team!
Welcome to the beginning of the most interesting part of your life!

I like having an account at Slashdot. I like my user ID. I like it when Slashdot says things like:

You Are What You Click
TiVo usage Info Collected For Sale
But then he said:
> You can do fascinating stuff with the amount of data Google has.
My feeble little mind can't handle the inconsistency! Arrrrrrrgh! (pop)
> I'm doing exactly what I would if I didn't work there.
You'd force yourself to take vacation without pay?

Damn I love ruby tho.

It can import Quicken files and more. Never used it but plan to convert from Quicken2000 soon.

The Spanish intercepted these French intercepts and are still pondering a suspicious code phrase: "noleche"

Luckily the Spanish found their Franglish translator which revealed the secret message: I'm not licking.
(from lécher, to lick)
