    There are reasons why people don't want others to know where they spend their money:
    - Buying illegal drugs
    - Donate $ to political candidates above the statutory maximum
    - Donate $ to finance terrorisism and other illegal activities
    - Bribery

    Also the weather and demographics (especially crime rate) matters. The University of Illinois system, along with leading businesses in the region and nationwide, trying to recreate another "Silicon Valley" in the Chicago area, but to no avail. You get the money, you get the infrastructure, you get the people, people rather go elsewhere.

    It is caused by the general negative stigma of "living in mom's basement".

    The thing is, there are PhDs who lives in mom's basement due to economic reasons. People now willing to live in mom's basement than carrying mortgage (and crapload of other) debt.

    Cash is king. Debt is slavery.

    People forgot that there are areas that is not covered by broadband, and there are people who still using AOL browsers today. I know a handful of these people, all working in government agencies. That tells you a lot about the mindset of public employees.

    For example in a normal programming language you casually do something like a = a + b ; but in HDLs if you do that, the design layout will be very ugly as this becomes a sequential circuit.

    And also:
    - racking up student loan and credit card debt
    - divorce and lose half of your assets, potentially sticking with a lifetime child support and alimony payment
    - overweight, diabetes and stroke

    All of the above are typical American.
