I've discussed this web of trust style model months ago with another programmer friend of mine, as I saw this problem before it actually arose. My thoughts were very much like the two other posters before me.

However, you are very right, this does make it easier for the RIAA, so I would imagine the only real way to fix that would be to combine this system with a freenet-style anonymizing network. This way we get the benefit of the trust system, AND we have some deniability/anonymity.

  16. This won't affect everyone.. on Mastercard Cuts Off Third Party Transactions · · Score: 5, Informative
While this may affect Paypal, it may not affect the other processors like CCBill, IBill, etc that process for porn sites. Here's what a CCBill rep I know had to say about it on one of the webmaster boards I hang out on:

CCBill, IBill, Epoch, I believe Jettis and WSB, all fall under the PSP category now, which was adopted by Visa given the range of services and type of operations we run. We are highly regulated, even more so almost every month, and we also report to Visa (and soon to be Mastercard it appears) the URLS of all sites we process for, on a monthly basis, along with a credit/chargeback report against sales for each of those urls.

It would stand to reason that Mastercard, like Visa, wants to know who is using their card to accept payment for what, which is well within their rights as a company, and well within the mysterious and fluid agreements they have with merchant account holders.

A company like Paypal, on the other hand, runs a sort of 'virtual currency' service, which is a true aggregator and a factor on the sellers side as well. Paypal doesn't qualify to be a bank, has zero regulation on what is bought and sold with Paypal transfers at the moment (or at least no enforceable regulations) and holds an absolute shitload of consumers money in trust. Since this money is transferred as a purchase instead of a cash advance, banks not only lose out on the cash advance fee they could be charging, they also stand to be liable for that money if Paypal were to go under and consumers started asking for chargebacks.

I tend to believe her about this sort of thing, I'm not too worried. They're just moving for some more control.

Just from your comments, I'm not sure if you got my meaning. The reason I commented on prohibition was because it DIDN'T work. It was finally repealed after the public ignored it for long enough.

I also agree that the record companies needs to pull their heads out and get with it. I don't often download music because of poor rip quality, but I sure as hell would for a minor fee if the quality and availability was guaranteed.

I'm all for the free market deciding, don't get me wrong! I'd love it if they decided to actually play this like a business.

Yes, it's massively illegal. But what do you do about it when a VERY large percentage of the people that those laws serve (believe it or not, copyright law is there to serve the people, NOT the record companies) decide they're not going to abide by them anymore?

Do you pass redundant laws? Do you try to erect technical measures to stop the people? Do you start building prisons and arresting people?

No. You change the damn laws, as the people have spoken.

At least that's how it is SUPPOSED to work. Think prohibition.

  20. The funny thing about the XBox on From Midway to Xbox, The story of Seamus Blackley · · Score: 1

I used to work for an IT company that did kiosks, specifically for the Big 3 auto makers. The one I made for them is in most US GM Dealers, and it sucks ass as it was based on an M2 (3DO 2) console.

When the XBox came out, our quite large, publically traded company asked Microsoft if we could have a dev kit so we could do kiosks on it. They refused. Apparently they weren't interested in supporting any development but games.

So, we lied and said we were going to do games on it.. 3 months later, their publisher relations guys STILL hadn't gotten back to us. I talked to Seamus through email periodically about this - great guy, but totally disconnected from the biz side of it, he was unable to help us out.

I don't know about MS, but I DO know that kiosk systems are the ONLY thing that kept the M2 alive for so long. It was stupid to blow us off, the thing is an ideal kiosk machine.

Ah well, maybe it will get some good games soon.

There's other ways for spammers to get emails than you divulging them. I have addresses that have never been used that get hit - they guess at them.

In short - your post was useless, and he was correct to call you on it. It doesn't matter that you are spam free with good practices and some good luck, most people aren't, and your being spam free doesn't stop the spammers doing what they are doing.
