Of course, you are forgetting (or ignoring) that people do make buying decisions based on the service they are advertised. It's NOT ok to change them in the future and screw all the customers. People PAYED for the OtherOS support. Now, Sony is simply ripping them off of what they payed for. Everything else is secondary.

Sad to conclude that it's really a global situation.

Dear Portuguese fellow countryman, our government in no better then others. In fact, I'd say it's probably one of the more corrupt govs in the so-called "Western World". I agree on the Streisand effect, but it simply has no consequences ... I'd go as far as to say it's a void effect ... you get all the shouting and media frenzy, but it's all quickly forgotten and swept under the rug (normally by said media).

And you'd have to agree ... it's a damn selective effect ... and the ones who select the causes normally are the ones that benefit most of it.

Let me just remind you about our great ID Card scheme, about our chipped car tags, about all the security hype...

Yes, I could agree with you. If the world was as sane and balanced as you color it, I'm sure we all could agree on some sort of balanced system. But you know damn well, contrary to your soft words, that it's none of that, it's completely shifted towards big protection and even bigger and insane restrictions.

Perhaps, just perhaps, if the level of protection was really intended to be fair and not to fill up large multinational and individual pockets, much more people could benefit from the advances in science / tech. Do you think Intel would simply cease to exist if the laws were more balanced? Again, who do you think invents / develops / creates out of the void?

While you say you can see the problems that can arise from such law, surprisingly you don't see that laws like this are completely redundant and unneeded. Many would agree with you that those groups of individuals you mention should get no pity, and should be handled by the law; but they should be punished for train-derailing, or for foreigner-smashing, or for hate-mongering ... not by being labeled a "terrist group" or something similar. These laws, while adding too little, can bring all sorts of wrongs within.

Excellent points you make. Of course, you're putting the finger on the wound there, and basically explaining why it will never be done as it should: the whole world (and the US above all) is geared in other directions. We have the constant wars of "democracy spreading", we have the "global warming", and most of all we have the banking systems pulling us all in the wrong directions. Unfortunately, it will never happen as it should. At least for the time being.

Addresses are not personal. They can be connected to you in some ways, but are not personal per se. For instance, when you get a bill by mail, you have the mail address AND the person name to whom the service is registered. Imagine a situation like this: gunshots are reported as being shot from address x; does that automatically implies the owner did the shooting?

License plates and phone numbers are more or less the same. I'm sure you can come up with some examples of your own to illustrate.

As for your email, that one is on a diferent level. With email you're supposed to have identification AND authentication. (name + password)
