My only question is if it could even learn to bs for me on those laggy starcraft 3v3 games.
I don't know about bsing but maybe if you hooked up a mechanical system to your serial port and ethernet cable, it would learn how to pull the cable out of the wall just before the end of your starcraft games.
These prices have always been around. It's just that they have never been enforced. If everyone had to pay for a player to listen to mp3's, mp3's would be nowhere near as popular as they are today.
This is just another case of/. editors making news out something that's been around for more than a year.
IMAX theatres display video in approximately a 180 degree field of view. Most non-imax movies are shot with a much narrower field of view since it's meant to be displayed on a flat rectangular screen. So these movies are going to have to be stretched out to fill up the whole screen. Watching regular movies in an Imax theatre is going to be like watching yourself in a fun house mirror.
No one wants to be responsible for anything anymore. That is why we have so many lawyers running around suing people. When something goes wrong someone has to be responsible. It could be the person himself who got in trouble or someone else, yet no one will ever take the responsibility upon themselves.
Slashdotters complain about lawyers suing for this and that all the time, yet they don't want to be responsible for the software they write. Write good software and provide a warranty, or else you are just promoting the lack of responsible ethics this country has.
Does anyone remember the story a while back about the computer that was cooled by submersing the whole thing in mineral oil, then running the oil over air conditioner coils? Maybe something like that would work. With the whole system in mineral oil, there's no way water or salt could touch the system. The only problem is, how would you cool the mineral oil? Maybe drop a bucket of the stuff behind the boat in the cold ocean water. Then swap that with the stuff covering the computer when it starts to get too warm.
There's no way anyone could control email now adays. Some company could easily setup a server on the internet that allowed email. They would probably call it something else like the Virtual Note Sending System, something that didn't sound like "mail". People would send messages through it just like email now. What could the post office do about it? If you can getting putting swings past the government patent office, you can bs a business like this past the government postal service.
MS believed that the way to avoid the problem of.COM's going under was to name their product.NET. I mean who's ever heard of a.net going under? Or the.net bubble burst? Clearly by naming their product.net, they would avoid all the problems the.com's had.
If everyone is expected to know all the laws and what they mean, then why are there so many lawyers? Our law systems are so confusing and complex that we have to hire special people to interpret and find laws that will help defend us and prosecute others. So it's not suprising that someone might not know there's a new law saying something is illegal.
Do you really think they can enforce this patent? Do you think they can go after every computer user in the world (literally!). They may try to take a few big companies to court since they have the money, but there is no way they can win. You can't let some technology go around the industry for years and years and then suddenly patent and claim royalties. I don't have any references but I have heard of companies trying this in the past and being laughed out of court.
Why do people think digital is so good? I do photography and still use film. Why? Because film has a much higher quality than a top of the line digital camera. Good low grain 35mm film (which is actually 24x36mm) can hold an image equivalent to a 130meg uncompressed digital image file.
Now look at an 8x10 camera, that's a very large sheet of film that is commonly used. To scan in that image and get all of the information in the image, it's going to be about 14G of data.
Now when you view these images, no top of the line home digital equipment can even approach the viewing quality of a good slide projector with film.
So what's so good about digital? Well, you can repeatedly reuse and copy it without the image degrading. It's also cheaper to make copies of. Analog video and film still has the highest quality and will continue so for a long time. Digital is just a cheap consumer product. Comparing digital to film is like comparing McDonalds fast food to a gourmet restaurant.
Let me just add, I'm not bashing digital. I would like to get a digital camera for snapshots and lots of other quick stuff. But when I want quality, I still choose film.
Just because a group doesn't profit off of something, doesn't mean they won't lie. Most of these people hack for prestige instead of profits. And prestige can be even more of a motivator to lie than profits..
Did people really think that after everyone made a big deal of Villanueva's letter to MS, that MS was going to stand by and watch Peru dump MS products and start using Open Source projects? When people make a big deal about some anti-MS happening, that is going to make MS even more adamant about jumping into the issue and "fixing" their reputation.
You people can't expect the patent examiners to have degrees in micro biology, genetic engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, etc... So they can't truly examine a patent. I think the better solution would be to allow a company that's supposedly infringing on a patent, have a "grace period" where it's allowed to find prior art or show that the patented thing is a common idea. If it finds prior art/common idea, the patent has to be thrown out.
Maybe there should be a penalty too for the company that files the bad patent. This would deter companies from filing patents, but if a company does file a patent and takes it to court, it will give them a stronger reason to fight so they don't get penalized.
Of course this doesn't solve the problem of the multibillion dollar corp defending their patent against Joe Bobs startup company. But that's another whole issue...
Historically humans have always attacked and destroyed what they don't understand. That or they become religious and used religion to explain everything.
So hacking (cracking) is no different. Most people don't understand it. They see from movies that people can sink ships and fire nukes by playing with BASIC on their Apple IIe.
And yes I read that a life sentence is only for murder, but I'm sure a crime done through hacking will get a longer punishment than through "normal" means. There are examples of this happeneing already.
I figured someone would have gotten and estimate on the cost of pizza and comics in CmdrTaco's area and calculate the number of spams he recieves every day.

Good thing CmdrTaco provided that link to Microsoft in the article. I can never find their site.
I mean they put their computers next to a hot, wet, humid, salty environment too.

After it's installed how hard is it to take out and leave somewhere?
Johnny pulls in the drive way after coming from a techno drug laden rave fest...
"Johnny, as your parents we're starting to become concerned about you..."
"W..What do you mean?"
"Well according to our black box, you've been spending 7 hours a night at the movies."
"Oh, uh.. right. Ya, uh.. I admit it, I'm a movie junkie."

It's all drive-by-wire (computer controlled).
This is going to bring the term computer crash into a whole new light.
I'm waiting for MS to retaliate and have a headline come out saying "Norwegian Government Expires."
Lets float all the RIAA execs in the path of the orbital debris, that should help stop it.

(Pizza + comics * 2) / 0.25 = # of spams.
