I have a few questions (so I only skimmed TFA...)

    1) Does this handle the actual SSL connection server side, not client side (as certain web based IRC clients I've seen will), so then, for example, this could be used to effectively ssh to a box through an HTTP proxy, assuming the proxy was between you and the webpage, not the webpage and the target box to ssh to?

    2) Assuming the answer to number 1 is yes, how does this differ from Ajaxterm? Is it less of a royal pain in the ass to configure? Is it faster? Thanks

I read the link. It's a bunch of Apple white knighting. Apple products ARE a "jail made cool" though. RMS might say/do a lot of crazy things, but he's right about that. OSX is a lot better than the old days, but the iPhone still seems pretty bad.

I mean, I have the ability to pull down a custom made ROM on my phone, swap out the kernel with one that gives me almost double the standard battery life, change the look and feel of buttons, wallpaper, and virtually any other aspect of it I desire. Can you change the wallpaper on a iPhone yet? This is exactly why it's 'rooting' on Android and 'jailbreaking' on iOS. I guess maybe it's not a jail to anyone who doesn't care about it, but then again, it's not "lock-in" if you're satisfied with the arrangement, and it's not "real prison" if you're actually happy there.

I get what you're saying, though I gotta say, your initial example didn't do your point justice. My first anecdote, the one about the guy and his girlfriend in their car happened to me a week ago. I was actually getting ready to go to sleep when I heard commotion outside. I called the cops and stood outside making damn sure the guy could see me until they got there. That was the point in which that I realized that the dispatcher wasn't aware of the situation in spite of people having been obviously watching outside their windows and from across the street at the bar. That REALLY pissed me off.

I'm not saying that we need people with 'hero' in our titles. I'm not saying that we need to go looking for trouble. I'm just saying we need to have the fortitude to act when we find ourselves in a situation where we are the only able or willing to, because no one else is.

That's a civil issue. If she 'loses it sometimes', perhaps it would be best if a trusted friend or relative were in control of her affairs.

That's not watching someone beat the shit out of his girlfriend in a car across from a crowded bar patio screaming loud enough you can hear him two buildings down with the windows closed and the AC on. Not fun coming upon that and realizing that people have been watching doing nothing.

That's not watching a bunch of guys beat on a single person. That's not even watching any number of the hit and runs I see out front while I'm standing on my balcony smoking.

I don't know about 'super' heroes, fancy costumes, or 'martial arts', but I do know this: The world needs heroes of some sort or another. The world needs good people who are not willing to stand around saying, "Well, I've got mine, and he's got his." The world needs people that THE CHILDREN (yeah, I know, I know) can look up to, outside of their parents. Right now, the only people they have are sports players, politicians, and what's presented to them via television. Not exactly the kind of role models I would want for my kids.

I think the reason why this is made such a big deal out of is because of the fact that it's not a picture you're turning in for a bike and losing copyright on. It's PRO-COPYRIGHT propaganda that the creator LOSES the copyright on should they win. For one, there's a certain irony behind that, and for another, it also implies that the only way to monetize your copyright on something is to sell it to a corporation. "Look at me, I'm a good Citizen, I've turned all my works over to the nearest Ministry of Performances. They even saw fit to grace me with a pittance this time!"

It's "I'm producing this bit about how awesome copyright is. Now that I'm done going on about it, you know, talking about how helpful it is and conducive toward innovation, and how swell and important it is for you to be able to possess rights pertaining to it's creation, I'm letting a corporation hiding behind a city government take it from me." And the children targeted wouldn't understand what they're even doing. I know I didn't understand copyright when I was a child. I don't understand copyright law now, and probably never fully will. But this PSA contest; It's parasitic.

Well, maybe my comment was a little snarky, but I have nerve damage in my left thumb due to a rather deep laceration in the meat of it from a few years ago. I can move it in a circle, but it's awkward and slow, so I would either have to use it in my right hand or fumble at it longer than I should need to with my left. I realize my case is a fringe one, but that makes it no less applicable to me. However, neither your comment nor my situation not being relevant to the majority of people out there changes the fact that, at the end of the day, "clockwise = down" is less intuitive than "down = down".

Well, kind of. I've had my 8 gig Zune (the little flash one) since prior to having a smart phone. My car has a cd player with no line in, so nowadays it stays constantly in my car with the FM transmitter/charger that I also bought to go along with it. Only reason it leaves is to change the music. My big problem with phone music players is that I feel like it drains the battery so fast. Admittedly, this is while usually listening to Pandora, so there's a data transfer element there as well as just listening to music, but still. I also don't have a large enough storage space on my phone for much music as I'm still using the 2gb stock Micro SD. But I have a good sound system at home, the Zune for the car, and then good headphones and access to Pandora at work, so the desire for a portable media player I can take anywhere is just not really prevalent in my life. The times I go for a walk or jog are actually the few times I actually 'unplug'. I'd rather not cloud my thoughts then with more of what I've been listening to literally all day.

I do agree with your assessment of phones driving the death of the Zune. I am kind of surprised that the iPad isn't nearing the same end, but it's the thing that really put Apple back in the mainstream, so I could see it being reluctantly phased out until there is absolutely zero demand.
