However what he claims is that her job was "unsatisfactory", and that it had to be finished by someone else. So what likely happened was that his footage looks like shit, and no amount or post production was ever going to change that. However he stole the footage that she had edited and sent for review, and maybe made some last minute tweaks to it, and never paid the complete balance for the work. I've had similar things happen to me before, where I would explain that you just cant convert an image 4:3 to a 3:4 and have it look right, and try to explain that a webpage isnt the same as a pdf

His 'evidence' consisted of sworn statements of his buddies, and the presumption that he would have sold more paintings. Furthermore the Australian court case said that she hadn't pursued it in court, however she actually filed a lawsuit in NYC, who knows if she or he actually served each other however.

The autocracy was a result of constant existential threats, much like what occurred in the USA.

I have a saying "terrorists need tyrants, like tyrants need terrorists", but it generally applies to the relationship fear and control.

His centralized planning also led to the industrialization of the country, but there was a chicken and the egg problem where you have to move people from farming, and you dont have anything to sell but agriculture to build factories. Many non communist countries have had this same exact problem, even countries that recieve IMF development (often capitalist dictators), but we like to use it as fodder against the communists.

its not as if our dictators are less dispicable than theirs (chile and iran come to mind), or that our development from agriculture to industry was less worse (irish famine) ( US slavery) (germ warfare).

Does that mean that R&D ceases without war? or that we have wars because we need R&D?

R&D is a process whereby you try to reduce your capital and labor costs, wars require enormous amounts of these costs to be spent (and ultimately wasted).

If you want more R&D, then advocate spending more on R&D, not on trying to start wars to prevent hedonism.

The situation in the USSR had less to do with motivation, and more to do with geo politics than anything else.

The USSR was trying to become an industrialized nation during WW2, and they didn't want anything to do with the war originally, that is until Germany decided to invade them anyways. It was the USSR who actually won WW2 and took the heaviest losses, but to survive they had to move from light manufacturing to heavy manufacturing for war time purposes, and then had trouble moving back to light manufacturing afterwards. This was compounded by the fact that the american elite was mostly greedy business, as they had already proven by neo-colonialism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and dating back to even the compromises made by the founding fathers in the constitution. To them the USSR was a threat to their economic interests, as they had a completely different world view, that of sustainability and equality. USA and UK created "operation unthinkable" which was a strategic analysis for the invasion and nuclear bombing of russia, and instead decided they wanted to fight an ideological battle and focus on containment. Russia became paranoid and autocratic as a defensive measure, and since it was less developed had to spend more per GDP on defense, and became gradually marginalized as its trade policy advantages dwindled from the containment.
