I think that this is primarily because desktop environments have taken over. The KDE folks must be hooked-up to caffeine IVs based on how fast they release updates and totally new applications. Ximian GNOME is also quite nice, and has a large following. Basically, "window managers" as we know them have been replaced by these more full-featured environments that are helping to bring Linux to the desktop.
They have acquired a new high-speed digital data recorder which is Linux-powered, and was donated by Hewlett-Packard.
I'm leeching onto your highly-rated post just to make a note that it's not Hewlett-Packard anymore, it's probably "Compack", "Hewlett-Paqard", or something of that sort since they merged.
Well, it's Friday night at 10:30 EST and it seems as I'm the only browsing Slashdot. I think I should be one of the first appointees to this Geek Guard;-)
Astronomers may have found members of the first generation of stars in the universe.

Well, I don't use Windows, but I'm (99.4 +/- 1.2)% sure that there's an Office Start-up icon (application) in the system tray that greatly reduces the amount of time it takes to load Office. Also, IE loads because of the reason I mentioned in my post above.
Read some of the comments above. They're basically the same piece of software (think Netscape 6.x / Mozilla analogy). "Staroffice 6.0 beta and Open Office 638C are the same build. Sun simply added some licensed software to it and bundled it."
Unfortunately (actually, it's a good thing), no single company controls the Linux desktop/operating system, so we therefore can't make some `Start-up Wizard' that loads when the OS boots-up and makes start time 4 times faster (think M$FT Windows/Office).
To avoid being "goatse'd", you can enable the option in the Slashcode that shows which domain a link is pointing to (click your username, and try each menu option at the top). So, for example, a link to a personal homepage at Stanford would be "My Honors' Thesis web site [stanford.edu]" rather than just a blind link that could end up making you look at a really gross picture of some guy's, ahem, well, you get the point.
Anyone else still having trouble believing that sentence above is talking about New York City, USA in the year 2001? --> PhantomHarlock writes "New York City officials requested and got what's left of Metricom to re-activate the wireless network in the area surrounding the World Trade Center. Rescue and cleanup crews are using the network to coordinate and access death certificates filed online. Only one rooftop transmitter had been destroyed, the other four are still intact."

Here's a log file!
There are also a few comments from Theo de Raadt, the OpenBSD Founder himself. Be sure to check them out at the very bottom of the page!

Thanks for backing me up. I think the pro-Microsoft moderators don't like me due to recent anti-M$FT .sigs of mine.
No, I hope God punishes those we target. We're not targeting civilians, but terrorists. That's all. Just the bad guys. The really evil ones.

I doubt those statistics are even close to being accurate. What are you, the friggin' Gardner Group?

No sh*t; I guess today's moderators don't really read Slashdot at all. Oh well.
What is your take on the recent actions and gestures made by the W3C concerning mandatory proprietary code?
If your last name was Rutan (read "Rootin'"), you should not name your kid Richard (or encourage the nickname Dick!). This is common sense.
Thankfully, Bart & Lisa's prank calls to Moe on The Simpsons should discourage future "Hugh Jass"s, "Ivana Tinkles"s, and "I.P. Freely"s.
Imagine a Beowulf cluster of Beowulf clusters!

Well, check out my .sig and you can get the StarOffice 6.0 beta off of a Linux server on a T3 :-)

Here's an SAT-style analogy:
StarOffice OpenOffice as
Netscape 6.x Mozilla
It's as simple as that.
Perl:= 2) +=$f=!fork;map{$P=$P[$f^ord
[ P.]/&&
@P=split//,".URRUU\c8R";@d=split//,"\nrekcah xinU / lreP rehtona tsuJ";sub p{
@p{"r$p","u$p"}=(P,P);pipe"r$p","u$p";++$p;($q*
($p{$_})&6];$p{$_}=/ ^$P/ix?$P:close$_}keys%p}p;p;p;p;p;map{$p{$_}=~/^
close$_}%p;wait until$?;map{/^r/&&}%p;$_=$d[$q];sleep rand(2)if/\S/;print
