I mean this in the nicest way, but how the hell didn't you know who Tim Berners-Lee was. For Christ's sake, you are a registered and contributing member of www.slashdot.org, one of the most popular geek sites around.
a modern browser that actually worked (with Flash and Java) would be nice
Thanks for agreeing with me on the parent post, but there is an OSS browser that works very nicely and is the best that's out there right now (I starting using it probably before 95% of the/. crowd did) -- Konqueror from KDE.
Microsoft's XBox, Stinger, and UltimateTV will all be failures for their business. Their small business software and.NET will catch on, but they won't be the next best thing since sliced bread like they think.
Just because they *have* new products doesn't guarantee they'll catch-on and make the company money. Just look at Sidewalk;-D
As of right now, that is not useable. Linking to a site that tells what a company has planned doesn't mean much. They're way behind the Open Source folks at supporting Itanium.
I totally agree. The original GameBoy is incredibly hot even over a decade after its original release. This can't be said for any other console/handheld gaming system, period (please no flames about how great your Commodore 64 is, etc.).

According to The Tech of Shrek on Tech TV, the princess initially looked too human, so she looked out of place in the fantasy setting. So, they simplified the animation to make her look more 'cartoony'.
I don't know Michael at all, but I think that you may be wasting your time trying to flame him every day or so for an event that happened quite awhile ago, and one that you will never have enough information to honestly say who was wrong and who was right.
So, a few friends/peers had a clash of egos or power; surely, everyone makes mistakes, and mostly everyone gains maturity from understanding their experiences.
As I see it (my opinion), Michael does at least an average job as a Slashdot editor, especially when you consider he rarely ever has grammatical errors in his posts.
Let bygones be bygones, and get on with your life, my friend.
Although I'm a Computer Science & Engineering major, I still have to write -- programs, that is. I believe that there is at least one professor at my school that uses a program s/he created to scan through all of the source code of each student for every project. It is set-up to find similar styles among students (so that even if student A copies student B's entire program and then changes the variables, it still sets off an "alarm" because they're written in an identical manner).
Regardless, though, receiving a poor grade on any type of project is a million times better than copying someone else's work, even if you don't get caught.
I don't cheat and I don't steal, which is common sense in my mind, but unfortunately, not in the minds of many other students.
It's hard for me, personally, to write a short paragraph commenting on a Slashdot story without getting criticized about something silly in a random moron's reply to my thoughts. Therefore, you can imagine multiplying that paragraph by a factor of twenty or so until it's similar in size to a Katz-length article (comment, really) and counting the number of trolls and flamebaits that go along with it.
I wish people would stop spending their time on Slashdot trying to prove others wrong, and instead perhaps try and give their own insight about a certain topic. It would definitely make for a much better experience.
I think it's great that Jon Katz organizes his thoughts and the facts on various topics that are extremely relevant and interesting, and then publishes them for us to read and think about. Unfortunately, too many readers of Slashdot have such low self-esteem that they feel it's necessary to put others down out of sheer envy of their intelligence, knowledge, or wit.
Well, that's the end of my thought. Here ya go trolls and flamers, have fun replying to this one.

I am, quite frankly, appaled.
It's not a conspiracy, it's not that Linux sucks, etc...
Riiiggghhhttt...we all know how much the popular "DotSlash" website gets hacked.
No thanks. I use Juno over the summer when I'm home from school and I'd prefer to not use that bloated piece of crap we refer to as Mozilla.

A friend of mine just got this and he's incredibly please -> quiet case fan
From the site: There is no other cooler on earth designed like this. The Molex Silent Systems Radial Fin(TM) design offers superb cooling performance but at the same time runs almost silently! The product employs an advanced fin design which gives a vastly superior surface area to that offered by traditional extrusion-based products. Different versions are available to suit a variety of processors, and because of their unique design, the coolers are not only incredibly efficient at removing heat but are also very easy to install.
In reply to your .sig: Try this site.

I doubt this guy's benchmarks are very accurate. Here's one of the Pentium II vs. PowerPC from 1997 (kind of old, but still very relevant) which proves to be a much closer battle.
So, rather than debate the validity of this crap any further, could anyone explain the above interrogative statement to me?
Anyone have a picture of *your* apple-fish hack?
All your Up,Up,Down,Down,Left,Right,Left,Right, B,A,B,A,Select,Start are belong to us!
Could Slashdot Sell Stock To Users Who Hate It?

No, a faster and much lighter browser would make sense -- something Red Hat doesn't have.
That's because Mandrake is the best Linux distribution available -- seriously.

That wasn't meaningful English, my friend. I *did* just "stick to" launching Mozilla via a "./mozilla" from the Mozilla directory. Get a clue.
