Personally I think that people today (US citizens at least) want stuff that is big. Large SUV's, large homes, big dogs, and big powerful computers. The internet appliances are small, underpowered (usually less than 200MhzCPU) peices of crap. Lets take Audry, what does it have about a 200Mhz CPU, 16Mgs of RAM? Any local storage? Can it do anything else other than just sit there and get your email and suft the web? Does it support plugins like flash, shockwave, real audio? Is it a cheap nic?

I do like the new palms coming out though. Color is nice but not necessary, but the ones like the Palm VIIx with memory and wireless is pretty cool.

I think the big problem with Internet Applinces is that they come with the service and many people want to pick an choose. Audry is nice as it comes with no service now, but it looks crapy.

There is also ways of knowing what someone is doing on a web site and doing lots of tracking. When I worked for a web portol, we knew where a user came to our site from, weather it was a search engine, or a link on another site. We knew what pages they viewed. Independance day where he hacked the enemy and blew up the mother ship. The movie hackers where they saved the oiltanker. I think one of the big reasons that hackers got such a bad rap was that movie with mathew brodrick in it that portraid hackers as bad guys and the goverment was trying to lock them up, rather than getting his help.

Now being a war vetran myself (Desert Storm), I can tell you that if the goverment wants to recruit hackers then I'd say that is probably the best way to serve your country. The fact is that java applets sort of suck.. ever since Microsoft and Sun had their court battle, Microsoft started killing Java. If Microsoft does not support it many people stop using it. That is just the way it is.

Well that is hot the only reason. Java applets do not perform the same way in all browsers. Each version of Netscape supports a different JVM. Even on different platforms, the same version of NEtscape did not support the same JVM. I tried this once and found my applet was different in IE on windows 95/98 and differnt on NT and different on LInux. Then mozilla is a different JVM, which crashes my browser, so I don't use it.

There is also little reason to use applets. The only effective place I have seen a java applet was a chat application that was a trusted applet. Outside of trusted applets, you really cannot do a whole lot.

I think the other reason is that they take to long to load on a page. I have only seen a few good applets.

I think the big difference here is that most people at some point in the Linux commuintiy start to look at security as part of the system, not like Microsoft where security is only now being thought of.

Lets face it Linux comes and has come with ipchains and now iptables for firewalling and many other UNIX flavors have similar features. Linux and the UNIX community think about things like proxy firewall combinations, where Windows is only now starting to think about this. It is not until the release of XP (or the anticipated release as it is not out) that windows is by default including a firewall.

People in the unix community also tend to be more aware of what is going on on their system. They have logs and there are tools to view them.

While I do not dismiss the possiblity that if Linux / UNIX got to be as popular as windows then there would be more 'attempts' I think that because of the nature of Linux you would have a much harder time of spreading a worm like code red.

A good UNIX administrator is going to spend time in configuring his web server and securing it. If they do not think about this then they are no good.
