Wow it is nice to see someone here who know a bit about electronics (I am an EE myself) and understands technology...
I imagine that next year the P II's will be dropping in price and I'll finally go and get a DUAL P II (or maybe a quad?) at about the price that I bought my P 233MMX's this year. I also imagine that with smaller transistors well have PII 5600+ Mhz CPU's....
punchthru.. isn't that when the e- going from s to d has no barrier and it becomes like a wire with a small resistance...
If Sun and IBM Unixes were to become more like Linux (and Linux more like there unixes) and *nix were to 'merge' into a more unified standard *nix. If they were all open source, then both Sun and IBM would benifit from open source.
1) a unified Unix would stand a chance of gaining markek share agains M$
2) less ports (if any) between *nixes
3) large compoanies could concentrate on the customer support end and less on the OS side (not none, just less like RH) making the OS easier to use, install, and maybe even more apps... (hey IBM where is that lotus notes client for Linux???.. where is that speach software?? ) (hey sun wher eis that Java??? for linux )
figure they got computer in the offices in 1996/1997.. how up to date can the examiers really be on technology?
They aslo have about.. 2hours to do there searches it seems, so how much can they search? That office needs a complete overhaul! I know I worked there. They are one of the few gov offices that generate there own revenue form there patents, so they feel that they have to have 'customer service'. Unfortuanately it comes at what price?
They want patents to only spend 18 mo or less in the office so someone trying to met there DAM! quotas issues the patent and said let them fight it out in court, cause he could not find art on this.
I think patent applications need to be made open and available to the public for people who know about the technology to have a look at too, as these are really the people that know the tech....
The should seek a new sutup utility first, dselect stinks, it is NOT new user friendly at all. You reall have to know what you are doing to use this thing. They need something like YAST or even RedHat's setup utility is easier to use.
They don't give the source code.. they only give binaries, and you can download or pay for the source code.. isn't that a violation of the GNU liscense?
Gee that is a 'big' suprise.. I have friends who tell me about 98 performance over 95.. its slower they say...
It amazes me thou. A hacker goes to jail, and if his crime was serious enough then he may not be able to use a computer for a while. A perjuror goes to jail or they impeach him from office.
Maybe Bill should be forced to step down from M$ as CEO. They are thinking of making a president step out of office if he is found guilty. Maybe this CEO should too?
I wonder if M$ was run by someone who wasn't such a b-----d if it would be any better?
The company has such power to do good things, now if they only made software that didn't crash your system and works well with other non M$ software.
I have been using SuSE 5.2 since Oct/Nov of last year (I know I am behind). I heard that 6.0 was coming out so I did not upgrade to 5.3. I cannot wait to get this and install. I have been looking for a glibc2 system that I liked. Sorry but I just don't like the RedHat installation or configuration tools, YAST is much better. Nor did I like Debain, it was much to confiusing.
Suse is much like Slackware, but it is the rpm version.:-) with a better setup tool (YAST).
Hmm guess I'll have to recompile everything that I have downloaded now, to be glibc2.. then get all those programs that I wanted that required glibc2... Then I'll... hehehe....
It looks like Linux has a chance of UNITING the various UNIXes, and this can be a good thing.
1) Easier ports between UNIX (who knows maybe they wont have to be ported they'll run out of the box) 2) More hardware that is supported by Linux and not NT (That is always a good thing) 3) More software, maybe SGI will port cosmo to LINUX, and some or all of its other products.
Looks like this year will be the year the M$ starts loosing market share in the server market BIG time, and the new millineum will be the beginning of Linux as an accepted OS. Especially when all those window users start having problems with there Y2K bug in 98.
FYI to all those that are 'flaming' the patent examiners.
Each examiner has quotas to meet on there applications. For a GS7 it is about 4 for a G 9 it is about 5 and as they get higher and higher up the scale there quotas go up to. What this means is that they get promoted and have more work to do and less time to do a good job on it. It is "ASSUMED" that the examier is skilled in the art.
Well some are and some are rubber stamping people.
It is dificult to do what they do and do a good job. I know I used ot do it and it sucked butt.
They hire almost anyone with a technical degree background. Typically enginering or science.
They teach them patent law over time, but it is just not an effective system. IT IS MAJORLY FLAWED.
1) There is no way that an examier I don't care how long he has been in the USPTO will know everything about there specific technology. 2) Computers are NEW to the USPTO. I was there in 1996 and they were having problems on weather or not examiers should answer email and if there should be a set time limit. Many examiners were just getting computer in 1996 and hated the things. (??? a-- backwards??) 3) People who are that new to computers and just learning windows were working on Patents for software. They couldn't figure out Windows 95. ??? Please !!!!
These are people that are working on software patents and they can't even use computers. How are they supposed to know about network technology????
Now about hte patent. They are talking about distributed processing. It sounds like something related to Beowulf, or on the lines of parallel pprocessing??? I just looked at the first claim and it looks pretty long, so there may have been a case that someone did not fully understand it and issued it, and said let the laywers fight it out in court. This happens too.
My suggestion is keep on programming, and use CVS and back it up. Keep records if you think that something you are working on may be of question.
They may chose not to enforce there patent. They may have just got a patent so that they could continue doing what they are doing and just ot have 'official' record that they were the first.
And the moral of the story is this don't buy from Toshiba, if you want to run Linux they are obviously sleping with the beast. Buy Gateway, Dell, or Compaq....
When does the Lotus Notes client come to Linux, then I can start telling my boss to get ride of this crapy Win 95 machine that I am rebooting 3 or more times a day???????????????
I am not happy when companies make software that creates another fileformat like mp4. Atleast M$ Word 8 files can be transulated into HTML files, or someother format. This exe cannot be transulate UNDER LINUX to another format (as of yet). I wish I had info on the file format for mp4 (and it is supposedly not mpeg-4), and also enough of the right info on mp3 to create some kind of file conversion utility under Linux. I tried running it under wine and I couldn't get it to work. and I am using the latest version of wine. I am very disappointed in these companies today that create platform dependant content for the web when any idiot knows that the web is made up of many diferent platforms from Mac to Linux to Windows, and who knows what else. I for one will boycott mp4 format (as it does me no good on my Linux machine). I think any company that puts mp4 on its web site shoudl be listed on 'http://www.websitesthatsuck.com'
I think that we would use the open source code to port all of windows apps to Linux and MAKE them native linux apps using the winelib. Then after the source code was ported who needs windows? It woudl probably run faster if the code was ported too.
I saw all about the new mp4 format on cnet tv on saturday.
The new format is a way of encoding the audio and I think video file into an executable. The executable is then run without a player. Of course this only works under windows because it is a.exe file. This format is used by some video camera maker ( I am not sure if they invented the format) and it is supposed to be more tightly compressed than mp3. Because it is an.exe file there is no need for any type of external player, the user just executes the file.
It may be possible to take the binary.exe file and 'decompress it' or convert it to an mp3 under Linux and Unix, but I am not sure.
I'll be honest here. I personally think that the person who created this format was trying to get ride of all other Operating Systems or was not thinking of other Operating Systems. So now the question is: 1) Can this.exe be played on a Mac using softwindows? (probably not) 2) The Public Enemy mp4 also had a virus in it. The virus has since been removed. Will this be the next way to distribute viruses and thus promote Windows anti-virus software? (Could be) 3) It was also designed to make it easier for people to keep in touch thru video email. Parents coudl buy there children video camera and have one at home and they could send each other video emails, and not ned any extra software to decode it. I think this was a good idea, but I also think that is is a bit short cited. I think they should have made it maybe a Java or Tcl/Tk executable, or some other cross platform executable. Will someone come up with a more efficient cross platform method of encoding video / audio data that doesn't need an external player?

But I think I got the japanese version... (LANS are nice too;-))
or some foreign version they arent speaking english....
ohh so realistic......
Yes they are a bit rediculous, but this particular patent seems to be talking about M$ active chanel and active desktop.
Personally I think that the USPTO is slacking an just issueing these things. Again the Patent Examiners are not qualified!

I saw in IEEE spectrum that they had an article and I sent it in to /. and then this???
hmmmm of course Spectrum just mentioned Linux...

I never wonder if we could make them as smart as us, but always wonder IF we should?
Didn't anyone watch Evolver on sci-fi? or Terminator and T2? Or more recently Virus????
Hey HAL tried to killed everone on that ship.
I for one hope we don't become a race of cyborgs!
