THREE days?????? surely the space agencies had some inkling about this asteroid much longer before now?
Surely they do some sort of skywatch/asteroid/meteor monitoring. What's so special about this asteroid that noone knew it was coming around here and how big/fast it is?
I'd be seriously worried if 3 days was their minimum time to interception.
this reminds me of an article a while back on how toilets are cleaner than your desk. The explanation was that heavy duty detergents are used to clean toilets whereas desks and keyboards are cleaned using mild cleaning agents.
Perhaps the best thing for us geeks to do to stop the spread of flu is to scrub our desks clean with the big guns - the TOILET CLEANERS!
Well, since firefox is the default browser of Ubuntu, and firefox is faster than internet explorer, of Windows, it is theoretically possible to download pr0n faster.:D
But seriously now, sure the download speed is faster, but at least I can MP3's with a minimal installation of Windows. What's the use of faster Ubuntu download if you still have to download MP3 codecs, AVI codecs, and just about everything else you need to get through a day. Granted, I listen to mp3's while I code - maybe you don't. And I most certainly AM NOT going to convert 5 GB of MP3's to OGG just because Ubuntu downloads faster.
From my experience of genetic algorithms, this "inherent power" _can_ also be it's downfall. imho, it's just too random and when I used it to solve our local version of the timetable problem this randomness factor pi$$ed me off!
I think GA's are only useful if it's user has NO FLIPPIN' CLUE how to get to the solution:
(1) generate some random cr@p.
(2) ???
(3) look for the 2 best
(4) randomly swap parts of the 2 best.
(5) repeat.
(6) HOPE it doesn't fall into any one of the gazillion local minima
(7) profit?? maybe!
I don't know much about things burning up... but what happens to a (metal) screwdriver or pliers that plummets out of orbit? Does that also just burn up and 'disappear'/(vaporize?) or is there the possibility, however small, of a lump/drop of molten metal hitting someone on the head?
Also, what exactly does a screwdriver the plummet out of orbit look like when/if it gets to earth?
That's always interested me....
Does that also mean that, technically speaking, the (approx) 70% of our body water mass is actually recycled dinosaur piss?
Also, that's why you geeks are always confused for women - cos you drop the toilet lid before you flush.
... how the galaxy itself looks like an eye?
And, two gigantic chunks of rock going round a star? isn't that just a glorified comet?
What is the correlation between something orbiting a star and that something being able to support life?

would be difficult running the mouse around on the rim....

while everyone seems to think this is funny or cool, it's actually a very real problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_debris , and http://www.space.com/spacewatch/space_junk.html Why has none of this stuff plummeted out of orbit and plonked someone on the head?

If the american people believe so strongly in their candidates, why haven't they "taken him out"? Has the age of assassination been sniper'd?
