So does Warcraft 3 now (it never used too), which sucks as the latest Securom won't load on my system, so I can't play without a crack, but can't play online with a cracked exe... Yeah, thanks Blizzard. I've always liked Blizzard, but I won't be buying any future products. I'm sick of companies using "security" measures that do nothing to prevent piracy, but screw over people who paid for the product.
As for not working with virtual drive programs etc... This is not new. Supposedly some versions of Safedisc and Securom do the same thing.
I would not buy from ANY company that used protection like this.
Erm... Cracks are illegal dude. If you're making a big deal about not being ripped off by software companies, surely having to violate the license agreement you've agreed too counts as a pretty big fucking restriction.
You've basically shot your own argument down. By using retarded shit like Securom, the software companies you seem to love so much have forced you to use their software illegally, because you violated the agreement you made when you installed. On top of that, if you're in a country with a DMCA style law, you're also engaging in criminal activity.
because I fully support that industry, and don't feel like it is trying to screw me over.
You've obviously never burned with the utter lies on the box (system requirements), bad patches (that render the game unplayable), copy protection (Securom stopping legitimate users playing, while not actually preventing piracy in any way), or a complete lack of technical support (I'm looking at you EA, who with one title, basically told me to fuck off when I wrote to them for support).
Damn! Yeah, Cavedog are sorely missed. I mean sure, Crawford has gone on to make Dungeon Siege, but I really didn't like that, despite really wanting too.
Total Annihilation still has quite a big following on the net, and with new addons still being released. Cavedog designed it in such a way as to be totally moddable. Lot of people fondly remember Starcraft, but Total Annhilation was far more innovative, not to mention better looking. (Don't get me wrong, I'm a BIG Blizzard fan, but I think TA was a superior game.)
I read that article too. There's also, in general, around military bases, a higher number of assaults that would normally be expected.
Despite my problems with the US war machine, the military are taught to kill with some degree of thought. All FPS will teach the morally and mentally susceptible (like the guys asshole teammates eggings him on to pull the trigger and murder someone) is to kill with impunity.
Did it ever occur to you that maybe those groups (although often led by idiots, admittedly), may actually have a valid point and maybe these games everyone is so fanatical about really do encourage violence?
You know, until I read this piece, I'd have disagreed with you. I don't believe the guy who went and got the gun is evidence that FPS games encourage violence. (A pro gun society is what has led to that in his case.) What I DO think is good evidence is his teammates egging him to pull the trigger! I mean what the FUCK?! Egging someone on to commit murder...
Never thought my opinion would change on this issue, but it has.
Alpha was a very interesting game. Nothing like CIV II I'd say.
Not entirely I assure with the article about Tomb Raider. Surely that was a sign of the coming apocalypse, not christmas...
Since I never get games for Christmas, I'm largely indifferent to what the holidays have to offer. (Actually, not strictly true, I did get a PS1 game for Christmas in 2000:))
A lot of people when they send feedbacks are complete shitheads. A friend of mine developed an editor for a game a few years ago and got TONS of feedback, most of it completely inane.
If they don't listen, they should at least not lie (like Valve have down with regards to bots in Counterstrike).
Warcraft 3 is the first RTS since Starcraft to hold my attention. The units, the graphics. Warcraft 3 is just class from top to bottom. (We'll ignore the rather dull single player campaign.)
The best RTS ever made IMO is Myth 2: Soulblighter. Still got a massive fan community now (who through a deal with bungie, have been able to release patches to make the game work properly in XP etc...), and is the only game from the 90's that I still regularly play. Okay, it's not the resource gathering type of game, but that's a big part of it's charm. Well worth picking up since it's cheap as chips these days.
EA are heading toward a fee based system. If what I read is true, their matchmaking service, in NHL 2k4, you only get it for 3 months, then you gotta pay.
I first read about UBO 2 years ago. It's been in beta for a while, and has been massively delayed, but I think it has great potential. There's a Japanese soccer game called Libero Grande where you can play as just one player on the field. It's a unique experience that is very rare. Being able to be just ONE player on a team... I think the idea has legs. As a baseball fan, I'm interested.
The article I read years ago said players have virtual DNA, meaning you could be a future hall of famer, or you could be a minor league reject. It's not entirely within your control, just like life. Interesting concept.
For the record, pretty much the entire reason I won't play as German's is down to the massacre of the Jew's. Sure, the allies aren't as good as popular history would lead us to believe, but the fact of that matter is, the allies didn't try to exterminate an entire race of people.
Ho-ho-ho. When there's talk of the war, some assclown always pulls this out.
Sure, I crack up when I hear Groundskeeper Willie call them "cheese eating surrender monkeys", but honestly, the entire French people have been forever condemned due to their government during WW2. That's pretty fucking stupid. Especially when the French anti-war stance in the lead up to to the Iraq "war" was the correct one as far as the majority of the planet was concerned.
This French bashing is lame, and shows you to be an uneducated, ignorant oaf, and a very bad troll.
Go off and get killed for your country if you feel so strongly about their stance you stupid cunt.
I'm kinda the same. I have no qualms playing as terrorists in Counterstrike. In fact I actually prefer it (mostly due to this bogus war on imaginary terrorists threats around the world). But in WW2 games, no, I agree with you. It's tough to get any enjoyment playing murdering bastards.
Call of Duty has it right. I'm in the Russian phase of the game, and it's very moving. The opening mission is terrifying if you stop to think that it actually happened! (Which it did, the retaking of Stalingrad.)
I say give the player a choice to play good or evil. I can understand the Japanese not wanting to shoot Japanese soldiers in the new MoH game. There Japanese were nowhere near as monstrous as the Third Reich.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't like playing Germans in WW2 games.
The question is, did Slashdot run this due to the likeness lawsuit and the legal issues there, or the fact that the Pedophile of Pop has been arrested for kiddie fiddling?

Yes, software companies are our friends...

So I guess the developers were inspired by that Cher song then...

Actually Warren Spector is responsible for the highly respected "Deux Ex" games.
Besides, I'm fairly willing to bet there's been more video game competitions than Magic the Gathering tournaments.
Not bloody likely. There are hundreds of tournaments, not to mention the pro tour too.
This is the first developer shut down that has stunned me since Looking Glass (System Shock, the Thief series...) went under.
Why is it the good companies go under, but the crap ones live on?
Well I can think of stuff like the Magic the Gathering tournaments... Never heard of someone pulling a gun there.
I mean for christ sake, this is like pulling a gun on someone because Word crashed.
Fuck you and your off topic moderation. It's comedy dammit!

Would if it was a thick enough door...

You're a twat. Have you ever actually been with a woman? I mean a REAL woman? Most women aren't the scrawny bints the media portray as ideal.
In short, quit being a cunt.

We're basically making them think that's the minimum volume we'll be satisfied with
It is isn't it?
