But you would then hear the noise from the out of phase sound wouldn't you? Unless ofcourse both the fan and the noise suppression system fail at the same time.
Bought a 75GXP 15Gig drive last september. It died after 2 months. IBM sent me another drive (not new, had replacement on it) from Hungary. This one seems to be working fine now.
My gripe is with the hardware review sites. I remember most sites (including storage review) recommending the IBM drive as the fastest IDE drive you could buy at that time. Question is, which sources of information are trustworthy and where should first time hardware buyers like me go so that we are not suckered.
What would be a good 7200RPM ATA100 drive (say 40gigs) that I can buy right now?
Get a Dell Precision 400 workstation. It is one of the quietest computers I have used. I have one at work and can hardly hear any noise from the computer. You can even buy them with pre-installed linux if you prefer.
I have a homemade athlon system at home and it makes a hell of a noise. The fans (especially the cpu cooler) is unbearable. Does anyone know of very quiet athlon/duron cooling systems. I don't overclock or anything.
From the FAQ :
Swarmcast breaks a file into packets, which are encoded using Forward Error Correction (FEC), a mathematical technique that Swarmcast uses to make it easy to reconstruct the file. The encoded packets are then distributed randomly to the computers that have requested the file. These computers become nodes in the mesh (a temporary network) that Swarmcast creates for this download.
Each node receives only a portion of the original packets. But each node is also aware of some of the other nodes receiving packets. Even as a node receives a packet, it also rebroadcasts it to other nodes, so packets are rapidly swapped back and forth.
As each packet is received, the receiving node checks to see if it is useful in rebuilding the file; if it is, Swarmcast decodes that packet. As soon as a receiving node receives sufficient useful packets, it reconstructs the file. Thanks to FEC, a Swarmcast download is a bit like playing poker when every card in the deck is a wild card: as soon as you've received five cards, you can build a winning hand.
So there seems to be some amount of redundancy built in, provided enough servers are running at a time. When I tried it out, there was just one provider, but at 500Kbps.
There happens to be no such language called hindu.
If it is hindi which is being referred to, I don't think that "Newoess" means one who makes false promises. In fact "Newoess" does not mean anything.
That was a damn good piece of high-brow trolling.
Perhaps the author needs to go read all the stuff at gnu.org.
The FSF was never about giving things away free. "free" as in freedom is what they mean.
And about the fsf backing for-profit companies. I am sure the author appreciates the kick ass kde project. I hope he takes some time to divine where the compiler used to compile the code came from. It surely didn't fall out of the sky or arrive on an AOL cd. Most parts were written by people working at for-profit companies.(cygwin).
Why is the parent moderated as funny? I am most sure that the person making the comment was not attempting to be. The situation he describes is very true. A sound card is considered a luxury in many Indian schools!
People develop free software to solve problems which they have or to learn about stuff. One very common thing you see in ee/cs labs in Indian engineering schools is that you get only the most neccessary equipment. PC sound cards are not considered that important. In this context such an effort makes a lot of sense.

Here are some general numbers that 15K Rs. a month buys you,
Conversion is almost 45 Rupees to a Dollar.
Usually a shared rented apt., anywhere between 1500 to 5000 Rs.
No cars, maybe a motorbike.
Cheapest computer would cost you around 30K Rs.
If you live out of your parent's home as many do, most of what you earn is disposable income.
Cell phone service in Indian cities are probably much better/cheaper than the US
Bread: 15 Rs.
Milk : 15 Rs. / Litre (around a dollar for a gallon)?
Restaurants: Something comparable to a $25 dinner in the US would be around $4 in India
And last and not the least, Movies, 1-4$ for a ticket and 25 cents for Popcorn/Soda
15K Rs. is much higher than minimum wage by Indian standards.
Does anyone know if the verizon cell-phone network in Syracuse, NY is working?
Quite to the contrary, Malayalam is heavily derived from Sanskrit.
> my sound cards *(always Sound Blasters)* have been
> supported just fine.
You more or less answered your question.
Actually some of these systems look for structural rather than verbal similarities. A bit more complicated than diff.
There are many programs out there for exactly the same purpose. For example, moss at berkeley lets you do this over the net.

bugs? Features you mean. Don't you know that it is illegal to delete features from software?

Very good point. OK folks, everybody on slashdot please sell their computers today and contribute the money to UNICEF.
Thanks!
