I think every industry deals with that one.

I've never had someone use my artwork for their portfolio (and there's a reason for that, namely I suck at art), but I did have a coworker relate a story I told them as if it happened to them about a day or so after I told them about it.

Sure, and a PC runs rings around Cell phones. That does not make them great calculators however, as it's the tiny math related buttons you want.

Before I started that job, I thought I knew what big was. Millions of something was a concept I thought simple enough. Then I actually had to deal with them, and transfer them around, verify integrity, and rename them (in some cases) and I now know I didn't know what a TB of small files looked like. Not really. And since we had 4 customers that all wanted something different (some wanted separate files for each page, some wanted them combined into a single file per document, some wanted 4 digits for the year, some wanted 2 digits, unless it was below a certain year, etc) and I had to make that all happen. And now I look in awe at Petabyte sized file references because I know I can't actually grasp how to handle that kind of data.

How long does it take to create the fiber tracking files? Though it probably won't work for you, if the file size is very different between the raw images and the fiber tracking files you might be better off to transfer the raw images and create the fiber tracking files at the destination, rather than creating and then transporting them. I used to work with large numbers of smaller files (millions of TIFF images transfered to different clients in different naming conventions and formats) a couple of year ago and we had to transfer the files via drives as well. 4+ TB just doesn't transfer very well, even over business class internet, so I have some idea what kind of pain you are under (we didn't have to deal with HIPAA though, since these were public county records).

Funny, I just switched last month from Tmobile because their service was so poor. I was with them for 8 years and I wanted an Android smartphone. I went down to the local store to see what they had and the selection stunk. Nothing even close to a moto Droid. They told me the new mytouch slide was coming out soon and that it was going to be great. I went home and checked out the stats, and I was underwhelmed. A couple days later I called tmobile to find out what the process would be when I switch, since I had two lines and I was only switching one of them. The lady practically begged me to go down to the store to check out the Slide before I made my final decision. I relented and drove down again. I explained the situation again and the guy showed me one. Mind you, it wasn't working. And he couldn't turn it on. They didn't have their store demo in yet. Asked him when they would have one in. He answered a few days, a week, he wasn't sure. The whole time he just had this blank stare. After that experience, I couldn't switch fast enough. I'm sick and tired of crappy coverage (in a city with a decent population) and service reps who don't really care about keeping customers. I'm sick of doing their job for them. If they want to keep me, they are going to have to work for it. So for $20 and a 2 year contract (on Amazon) I switched to Verizon and got a Droid. When the newer phones are announced in a couple of months if there's one I really want I'll switch my wife's line over, give her mine, and I'll take her phone.

Many years ago I worked for a company and we had a rather out-dated computer system. I finally convinced them to upgrade, but we still didn't have internet (which would have helped tie the different locations together for billing purposes, etc). We had a simple batch file to backup on a Zip disk one specific directory each day (which had billing information, etc in it) which was sent offsite each day and we had an employee get busted for porn because he saved it into that specific directory. Why? Well, I don't think I need to point out he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but still, this was a whole new level of stupid. Never underestimate just how incompetent people can be; some of them will surprise you every time.
