  1. Has anyone mentioned that developing Flex Sucks? on Decoding Adobe's Big Device Push · · Score: 2, Informative

Has anyone else tried to use Flash/Flex to do anything more then just a game/animation? The frameworks are at best immature. While the Flex language is "ok" (basically just ECMAScript), the libraries, tools, frameworks, and most everything else that goes with it are just abysmally bad when compared to any other modern language (Java, Obj-C, Python, C#, etc).

The Flex Builder plugin for eclipse only supports Eclipse 3.3, which means modern plugins won't work. The flex compiler itself is slow and hard to setup. Oh, and the tools only officially support Windows and OSX. The documents are horrible and only give you most simplest of use case examples, but this might be because most of the frameworks breakdown when doing even remotely off the "rail" they have defined.

Just as a quick example of something inexcusably broken, the ComboBox that comes with Flex doesn't have a set selected by value function. You can only set by index and by label... which is just crazy when you consider most ComboBoxes contain localized strings order alphabetically in that local.

As a development environments go, I think you would be hard pressed to find something worse for development than flex.

And I could go on about how bad the user interaction is by default. But you really have to see that one to believe it.

How come I get 503 errors? I've been experiencing this for about 2 weeks now. Didn't seem to be happening before. It'd be one thing if it was all the time, but it's not. Is it slashdot, or my choice of browser (firefox)?

long and the short of it.. someone at slashdot's end broke something... There isn't anything we can do but complain for now.

2nd question is: how come sometimes there is text that renders as ^D^D^D^D^D^D sometimes. I think it's when someone tries to use a special character that my browser (again firefox) doesn't support, but I don't know how to fix this. Again, slashdot is the only place I experience this.

'^D' is when people want to pretend to delete things... it's because on terms that doesn't support the backspace key that's what shows up (since that's the actual code that gets sent)

ok, that is just plane untrue, there are physical effects of ADD/ADHD. Personal I become very hyper when I don't have enough stimulants in my system. Some days if I don't take ether my meds (which are stimulants, if give to someone with normal brain chemistry) or at least some caffeine I can't sit still.

Now this isn't to say that it isn't over diagnosed, but just because some people are using it to cheat the system doesn't mean everyone is.
