is when it's over.. Yeah, sure.. I lose an hour sleep when it first changes over, but I personally like having the extra hour daylight later, and would prefer to stay on DST.. the problem is the switching back and forth that causes more issues. Eliminating timezones all together would be a major pain in the ass. Machines deal with UTC.. Most _people_ don't.. If I'm going to call someone on the coast, or even in another country. It wouldn't work out well if it was '9am' here and '9am' there (according to us both being on UTC), but they're still asleep, because it's when they'd normally sleeping (and still night time there). jmo.
So I installed it this past Tuesday evening on my dual dual-core G5, w/ 8G mem, 250G hdd.. install went without consequence and it found 2 updates, one for RDC, and one for the keychain issue (neither of which caused me any issues), I did an archive+install.. My findings so far, other than the few applications that have broken...
The machine seems slower, and renders a little slower sometimes (even on an NVidia Quadro FX4500)... as well as there's a process called UserEventAgent that constantly and consistantly shows up as unresponsive in Activity Monitor.. If you kill it, it's fine for a few seconds, then back to unresponsive.. I'm hoping most of my response issues will be handled in.1 or.2.. but other than those annoyances, it's been a fairly smooth ride..
cell phones too? They gonna arrest themselves? *groan*.. The people I see causing the issues are the driving texters or the ones not using hands free... just my $.02 though..
I actually borrowed an idea from a previous employer (tho wrote my own implementation), called StrongBox. it's a mysql database AES encrypted messages (containing passwords, messages, etc), the key is a SHA-1 has of a request ID and their employee ID.. it works rather well, it's all php/mysql and a little bit of javascript
I for one, am going to buy the new 'release', because it's better than VHS, and saves me from having to convert it myself.. I thought the whole point of watching a movie was to enjoy it, not sit and analyze it's post production, but after reading an ongoing thread on 'originaltrilogy.com', several posts by someone who apparently 'works in production and has done work for lucasfilm', insists things like CGI grain has been added to the movies, etc.. Why can't you just enjoy the damn movies? Instead, it has become, I want super higher than high def video and ultra surround sound of a 30 year old movie.. criminey. I'd hate to be around some people when they see a movie in the theater... Just my $.02.
If they shut off my Dish DVR, they sure as heck aren't putting a TiVo on top of my tv... I have several TiVo's here, heck, I used to be involved in some of the hacking. Would I ever use them again? No. They kept changing their service model, and support model. I don't need some box telling me what it thinks i need to watch, for me, my DVR is simply a better VCR. I don't see how Dish has violated anything of TiVo's.. the SW is different, the HW is different, I think TiVo's just getting greedy because they're no longer innovating anything cool, and they want to monopolize the market... That's just my $.02 though
A fellow I used to work with (he's since moved to other employment), was getting ready to move down here from Chicago, so being touristy, he took pictures of lots of things. He noticed a caravan of black SUVs. He made the mistake of taking pictures of them, as well as when taking pictures of a building, apparently, the security camera was in the picture. One of the SUVs promptly drove up onto the curb where he was. He was detained and questioned several times over the span of a few hours..
I work for an unnamed backbone provider, and have currently been involved in blocking said DNS Amplification attack.. to give you a general idea of the size of the attack and the number of zombies involved.. When I left work... The attack was 14,768% of 9.8MBps... or.. over 13GBit/sec... Our infrastructure is holding up just fine, however.. Personally, I'd like to find the 'owner' of these zombies, and castrate him. I guess the guy doesn't have anything better to do with his life than trash the net...

but I'm a dj, and no, i don't mean radio. I mean a real DJ. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this.. but I use vinyl.. yes, they still make vinyl.. most anything released these days, gets pressed to vinyl too still. I don't use cds, and i don't use mp3s. personally, i think you have more control over the mix with vinyl and it's more of an art form getting the mix right, than just standing there playing cds or mp3s..
actually, i just used it again recently (the Nov build) and i didn't need XP SP2 on the machine i was putting it on at all, it just didn't install the patches that required SP2.
AutopatcherXP is released pretty much monthly an is a conglomeration of all security updates, patches, etc.. any time i've had to install/reinstall XP onto someone's machine, i've grabbed the latest autopatcher and slapped it on my thumbdrive, and took it with me. requires no getting online on the new system until you're all done. safer that way, and i've had no issues doing it that way.
and when i worked for AT&T back in 1995-1996, we had about 50 of them +/- that were in use in production for uucp mail. all running SYSVR4, go figure:-)
Never heard a complaint eh? Try anyone that used their "Medalist" series.. biggest pile of dog crap they ever made.. Personally, I never had any failures w/ WD, maxtors.. well.. let's say my 60 gig drives like to Clunk-Clunk periodically... I will however, say, that the 200G Barracudas are excellent, and generally the seagate Barracudas and Cheetahs are where they speend the most R&D $ to make the drive work well.
is release the rest of the damn seasons. all of STNG was out in a year, but what about other shows? Buffy only has up to season 3 out here, and same with M*A*S*H, while over in europe they get more, if you're gonna axe the damn show, atleast put the dvds out so that those of us that LIKE the show, can see what we haven't seen yet (or watch it again), since stations like FX can't seem to get past season 5, (ok ok, they showed most of season 6 *once*, and skipped 3 episodes)...
cuz it's gonna soon as the media finds this, and of course, it hits TiVo... all i can say.. Thanks alot chris.. (cworley).. now the 'vcd kiddies' will strike, piss everyone off, make tivo act, and there goes my hobby.. all i have to say, is if/when tivo acts, you'll see *why* we didn't release the tools we have.. (which, i can tell you work probably better than nickhull's)..
i myself currently run (or should i say *ran* (since ext3's patches won't work on 2.4)).. ext3... never had any problems and it's saved me from a few long fscks (on 10 to 60 gig disks)... i had tried reiser previously and it ate my disk:P.. while it's nice to see reiser put into the kernel finally, what about ext3? steven tweedy's been doing quite a bit of work on it, and unlike reiser (this part really appeals to me), it doesn't require redoing your disks, you just add the journal and can still mount the drive as ext2 if you need to..
the SELLER canceled the bid, the bidder didn't retract it, and if you noticed the sellers comment... he doubted the legitimacy of the bid (would YOU pay $75K for that stuff?, i sure wouldn't)...
one complaint i have (i have a 505TR), is for example sony's proprietary firewire chipset.. which has pretty much eliminated using it under linux (the firewire), tho the rest of the stuff is "standard available stuff"..:/
Alright.. to clear up a few issues.

This is the 3rd article on this, if you want to post about it, post about the latest things we've done on it. (and i say "we", because i'm one of the people working on various things)..
To quickly cover some things, we have support (for those that dare to do it, support for large disks (over 30 gigs, i'm currently at 108 hours @ a 61 gig for a 2nd drive), ppp/ftp/telnet are now useable, MP3's are NOT playable on the TiVo, and it's not an issue atm, the mpeg decoder does NOT support layer 3. There are other things being worked on that will reveal themselves as time progresses.. I think this whole zdtv thing is probably why this "article" got posted again. if you _really_ want to know what's going on, check out the avs tivo forum (specifically, the underground for "hacking" issues), and a final note, *NO ONE IN OUR GROUP IS TOUCHING SUBSCRIPTION ITEMS*, so personally, if you do, and tivo catches you (and i hope they do).. you were warned.. Now, back to the recycling of old stories. As for the moderators, mark me redundant all you want, I don't really care about "karma" et al, i'm too busy working on TiVo things.
Youtube has ads? I must be really lucky.. I never see any ads. lol
