This coming from a user with a UID > 300K. Not that I'm an old timer around here or anything, but the UID's do seem to be going up exponentially. Wether this is good for/. or not is the question.
Not likely.. how does a hard drive understand every type of file system? It might be possible with FAT32, but still unlikely. And if they put copy protection into Windows (like they're already doing with media player), it's just one more reason for people to switch to Linux!
Your response is a bit over the top, but I tend to agree. Programming is a science. There are specific ways (algorithms) to solve specific problems. Programming is governed by logic, not emotion.
I wish IBM would spend some time to get my Lexmark 3200 colour printer to work with Linux. Since I've been on the @home cable Internet service I havn't used my modem at all except for the occasional fax in the last three years. I think that win-printers should be a bigger priority.
Anyone know how to get one of these printers working?
There are anti-trust laws governing these console game makers. They would be happy to give the hardware away for free and sell you the games at $100 a pop.
By the way, only Nintendo sells Nintendos. Not Sega or Sony.
Compaq's suck large hairy donkey balls. My company uses them exclusively, and they are unstable, over priced, and are full of annoying features (BIOS saved on HD, on/off switch doesn't work like an on/off switch, weird physical layout inside the case, older MMX machines would spontaniously choke on PNP network cards after working for months previously, I could go on...)
Besides, if I wanted an unreliable but somewhat fast internet connection, I would stay with Rogers@home, they fit *that* bill perfectly.
Don't kid yourself about Napster... that company, like every other company, exists for one purpose: to make money. They had planned all along to generate revenue by switching to a subscription based system or to put advertising in their client software. They just haven't gotten around to it yet.
Also, people tend to think of Napster in a romantic way, like robin hood or something. But if you tried to reverse engineer their client software (to make a compatible client), as some people have, Napster's lawyers have come down pretty hard on them.
Anyway, I hope they open source their server and client software if they loose their court case, but it won't happen.
Sorry for the off topic comment...
I can relate to newbie frustrations... After using for Linux for a year and a half, I'm still learning all the time.
Anyway, the newbie should look in his/usr/doc/HOWTO directory... I didn't discover that until about a month of reading the same stuff over the web from Windows while trying to configure Linux.
In our company you need your swipe card to get through every door. It's probably a death trap in case of a fire (although many doors are one-way - they allow you to leave without swiping). Still, you can't get anywhere without swiping at least twice. It's a pain in the ass, but it controls who has access to the computer room, the warehouse, etc.
Yes, all my non-geek friends think I have it made. They don't realise the abuse that goes with the job. We should start a union or association or something.
That's one of my complaints... Many of my old tapes are degrading to the point that they are unlistenable. If I bought an album on cassette, why can't I download the MP3 version? I've already paid for the right to listen to this music. I guess they want me to go out and buy the CD.
It's called "natural selection". Darwin would be proud.

Yesh, but does the XBox crash all the time? That is one big advantage the console machines have over PC's (as gamers typically use Win95/98). Stability is critical on console machines.
Intel seems to be following Microsofts lead... Just get it out the door and worry about the bugs later. Of course, software patches are easier to handle than recalls.

What about Napsters profit? I'm sure they will charge a lot more than $1.67 per month!

Perl has been available for Windows for a long time. You can get it here.

Javascript has nothing to do with Java. Netscape invented Javascript and used the name to capitalize on Sun's hype about Java.
Can you imagine a Beowolf cluster of these?
Try using CTL-F to bring up the find dialog. You're right, though, Netscape highlights the words better making the feature less of an ass-pain.
You may want to try spending a bit less time on Slashdot.

I usually use ftp to get linux at 4:00 am ... I don't think I'd be going to Walmart for it.
This is so blatently fake that it's not funny. Must be a slow day at Linux.com ... not to mention Slashdot also...

Hahahaha, I bet most everyone spotted that missed paranthesis immediately. This is Slashdot after all!

Further more, you don't know a damn thing about Canada.
