"For every four Americans working a 50-hour week, every week, there's one American who should have a full-time job, but doesn't."
This, however, doesn't follow. If a 40 hour a week worker is more productive I might not need the extra worker if I'm getting more from my team. However, that may mean I can put my capital to better use in a different area, not necessarily software development.
Think of it this way:
2 employees working 50 hours = 20 hours of overtime, paid at 1.5x = 1 guy getting paid for 30 hours of time.
Let's also assume that the 2 employees are 90% as efficient for the overtime, so they only produce 18 hours worth of work during that period.
So, essentially, you could pay 2 people for 18 hours of work, or you could pay an extra guy the same rate for 30 hours of work.
The only viable argument against this is the idea of employee costs concerning taxes and benefits. In that case, I could see a government tax break for companies that don't pay any overtime, given the idea that they would then hire more people to fill in, and then their income tax would actually be more - not to mention the fact that they'd be off unemployment and such.
When I was in high school (in the mid 90s), a teacher was hit with and egg as part of a senior prank. I posted on a local BBS (yeah, that's how long ago) that I thought it was funny because I thought she deserved it. This teacher was either on the board, or knew someone that was, because the following day I was called down to the principal's office and confronted with a printout of my posting. Threatened with disciplinary action, the principal tried to coerce an apology from me.
I looked her right in the face and said, "I don't think I should have to apologize for something that I said outside of school on my own time."
The principal said that she strongly suggested that I apologize anyway, and then dismissed me. That was the end of it. Kids may not have the same rights as adults in all situations, but until they are instructed by their parents, they should assume they do, and defend them as necessary.
Maybe if game developers made a game that took me more than a day to beat and interested me enough to play more than once, I wouldn't be willing to sell it so easily. Essentially, what I'm trying to say is that if they want to kill the used game market, make the game good enough that people want their own copy, instead of trying to find ways to force people to buy it.
...and you do what he asks. He pays you to do what he tells you to do, so I don't understand why everyone is so against these sorts of things. Just make sure to cover your ass and document that you did exactly what he said so he can't throw you under the bus for anything, and then collect your paycheck.
Just because the cost of crude went up, that doesn't mean that the gas station paid any more for the gas that I am pumping into my car. There is no reason the gas prices AT THE PUMP should change unless the station actually pays more for the delivery.
I know there are people that can handle multitasking, but there are far more people that can't. I'm a semi-professional racecar driver, so I know how to handle a car pretty well, but I never talk on my phone while I'm driving. *IF* I eat, it's always something that doesn't require me to look (bag full of french fries or chips), and that's usually only on long drives. You should take care of your business before and after driving, not during.
If you want safety, I think the real solution is making a driver's license harder to get, but that's just my thoughts.
People drive sport bikes without helmets all the time in states that don't require it. Nothing unusual there.
Just because you don't fear death, that doesn't mean you have a death wish, nor does it make you an less stable. If someone came to me and said, "I will pay off all your student loans and credit card debt, buy you a brand new house, a new car, and all you have to do is work in Iraq for a year"....well if I wasn't gainfully employed, I wouldn't be crazy for considering it.
Unless you live within walking distance of your job/school, the vast majority of us need a car to get around. That's always been a 'privilege' in our society. Why should internet access be any different from that?
Out of everything you said, the only thing I agree with is the government regulation on the banks allowing (or more accurately, not preventing) them from doing stuff they shouldn't do with other people's money. That needs to change. And corporate contributions to politics should be stopped as well. OWS should make that their goal. Maybe then, something might actually happen.
I have a decent job in IT, with great healthcare, live alone, and I can afford to pay all my bills.
I still hate OWS, but it's because I hate whiners. That seems to be all they are doing, is whining and blaming someone else for their problems. Take some responsibility for your own actions, and then work on improving it. It's not like Wall Street showed up and forced you to take a mortgage you couldn't afford. They didn't tell you to spend too much on your college degree. You either want the freedom to do as you choose, or you want the government to make the choices for you so you don't make stupid ones - pick which situation you want and accept the consequences.
I think this librarian is just upset because he/she is realizing how irrelevant the idea of a library is anymore. Seriously, when was the last time any of you actually used a library?
If you're going to fix something about this site, you should first identify something that can be easily recognized as broken. What comes to my mind is the JS that drives the comment system. It's unresponsive as hell. Most of the time, I have to click "Preview" and "Submit" multiple times before anything happens. Even then, it often won't update to show me the finalized comment, forcing me to use my browser's Refresh button. Since this is neither consistent nor the intended functionality, I consider it a glaring and obvious bug(s). If I were the developer, I would focus on basic usability and getting fundamental functions to work smoothly before I'd move on to larger ideas.
This is absolutely a must. Between that, and if you could eliminate the need for html code to format posts, life would be much better.
As long as I get paid for giving electricity back to the power company. Maybe then I could make back the cost of the car by charging it at night at my house, and then plugging it in at work and selling it back at a high cost per kwh.
I was really hoping that the "bricks" where the office lights turning on/off. Having control of the buildings lights would have made for a much cooler display.
Oh no! The end is near! Ever since the introduction of this new high tech telephone, people no longer use the telegraph to communicate!!! We will all be out of jobs! We need the government to give us more money so we can stay in business forever!!!
Actually, it was the other 49 states that had something to do with it. If you think Bush was really that bad, why did he get enough votes that a few hanging chads made any difference? And then, on top of that, everyone re-elected him!
So, the route of the problem was the hanging and dimpled chads, it was the millions of other votes that were not miscounted.
This actually sounds like an excellent idea to me. Just saying that X number of people are boycotting because of it doesn't really show the true value. But an actual number of units returned would demonstrate how much revenue they are losing because of this policy.
This is the best thing I've read all day. Thanks for the laugh, I really needed it!!!
Now back to fixing yet another system that a user who thought he knew what he was doing managed to thoroughly screw up, corrupt data, and prevent everyone from using it...

Someone please mod this guy up! Why do I always have points when I don't need them?!!!
I don't know why I got modded as "troll". I genuinely though it was funny.
Apple just filed a patent for methods of creating a "Reality Distortion Field". They are calling it iLie.
I hope you are trying to make a joke, because I'm pretty sure that a few people use google search and gmail for a couple things.

Honestly, though, what's wrong with that?

For $600/day and the ability to quit and go home when I'd had enough, I'd consider it too.
What's wrong with wanting to work in a war zone? The pay is usually better, and some people like the daily excitement.

If they did manage to stop something, you better believe they would be proclaiming victory every chance they had.
