We've had a famous actor, silver-spoon CEO types, a military guy, and career politicians (along with combinations of the above).
Governors of one the largest states in the US and bigger economy than many countries in the world,
CIA director, congressman, ambassador
Rhodes scholar, Governor of AR for many years
Governor of one of the largest states in the US (admittedly not the best of choices)
Now we have an academic community organizer, whatever that is.
All listed were far more qualified than this current guy, heck even their VP's were more qualified. It was a risky move to trust a guy with no experience at anything to take the lead because he's a good speaker. It could have paid off, but it didn't. Are things really any better than they were before he was elected and had both houses supporting him? Polls say most think he is failing. I don't blame him for the economy but he's done nothing to make it better and likely has made it worse. If it wasn't for the Osama capture, his ratings would be easily in the 30's or lower with no hope of reelection.
Good point, many engineering grads with similar experience don't make much around here. The only exception is oil/nat gas. That or government work. I could easily make 10-20k more if I started worker for the local air force base.
The company has replaced many of our engineering staff from Poland. They literally are paid 1/3 of what engineers in the states make, and that itself is pretty low compared to other industries.
It might take a lot of initiative and hard work, but $300k+ within 10-12 years and reasonable job security is available for the top 15-25%, and $150k is possible for the second quartile
Sheesh, what industry (besides oil/natural gas) are engineers readily making 150-300k after 10-12 years? Perhaps it's b/c I'm in the midwest but I've never heard of any engineers making anything like that in any of the industries I know as well as referring to state statistics on wages. The government had an initiative a few years ago and started paying engineering more to keep up with the private sector (after I left naturally), and the telecom industry has tanked since 2000. Even aerospace is tough to make much progress in. The only place around here that engineers do well is for oil and natural gas but then the petroleum engineers have locked much of that industry down so unless you got the specialized degree you're out of luck./perhaps I need to go home and rethink my life.
I don't want more engineers. The less supply there is of folks like me the more in demand I am and all the benefits that go with it. Personally I think engineering is not paid enough compared to many other professions. Many industries are already pushing engineering students into being "paperwork engineers" or product management types instead of engineers. No, I don't want more engineers, I want less b/c it treats the remaining ones as better. Having more will only dilute the term 'engineer' and reduce benefits of the degree. Perhaps that's being too self-centered but I don't see how having a glut of engineers and harder to find jobs will be good for the long term.
cool, 5,000 soiled teddy bears and 10 grand of unusable electrical equipment!
Rare metals in electronics may be worth it. As would trying to salvage stuff that had some water damage. I'm just surprised a cheap GPS type transponder isn't attached to make finding/tracking that much easier.
I find this attitude confusing. How in the world can 'teh govermment' keep you from committing suicide? They can't and there is nothing preventing TP from doing it himself right now. There are so many effective ways you could do it with any imagination at all in a peaceful, easy way. Regardless of your religious boogeyman argument the only thing the government outlaws is another party assisting you in doing it and I can easily see why, as there are far more cons than their are pros to that [in my opinion]. But then it wouldn't be suicide if someone else did it for you.
I guess the good news is that they will mostly sink down into the muddy bottom and be out of the way.
Strangely most of them float, as ocean yachtsmen will testify; they're a serious hazard.
By serious hazard do you mean serious free treasure? Doesn't finders-keepers work in international waters? I realize the issue of towing back to a port and being able to salvage but it seems like it might be worth it in some cases.
But here in the good old Magnited States of America, our society has evolved to include strong worker protection laws.
Surely, you must be joking. And I suppose the USA has strong consumer protection laws as well? Both are utter bullshit, although I will agree that many of the unions in the USA have become twisted into some kind of monstrosity. The USA has practically no worker protection, when compared to much of Europe for example. Where I live you cannot just fire someone because you don't like their haircut or don't approve of their leisure time activities. Employers actually need a valid reason to terminate you, unlike the USA where you can be fired on the spot for practically anything. I don't belong to a union per-se, but I also don't need to worry about sudden termination without cause either. I do belong to a white-collar trade organization which works for me to help ensure that my employer gives raises that at least cover cost of living increases plus reasonable salary increases. I pay a tiny annual fee to benefit from this and it also guarantees that I will receive 60% of my salary should I lose my job due to my employer's decision (layoffs for example), for up to 3 years. It is opt-in and there is no pressure to belong to anything, though blue-collar workers are generally automatically covered by a union.
In much of the Western civilized world outside the USA, unions can be useful and actually do protect workers from unfair practices without being used for things they are not meant for. The problem with the unions in the USA is that many of them have or have had close ties to organized crime and have been used for political purposes.
There is a difference between "worker protection laws" grandparent post was discussing and what you are using as "worker protection laws". His was about safety, yours about employment and termination rights.
I think you missed the entire point of TFA, which was an entire year before they announced their "feature" this guy had ALREADY submitted an app which they shamelessly ripped off for their OS, right down to the logo.
I'm not a developer but software like this isn't created in a week is it? I'm sure Apple has many plans for new features to it's software in the works and frameworks that are being built on the next upcoming release (iOS 5.0) that will enable future features that many could guess are coming but either the software or hardware just isn't there yet.
This is not a new or innovative function. I've been doing this with my Palm Tungsten E since I got a bluetooth signal for my PC way back when. Also did he copy the syncing arrows off of Palm? Cause that's what theirs looks like as well. Add in the universal symbol for wireless and you have a pretty standard icon for what many would come up with for wireless syncing.
Relax. It's summer and there are a lot more teenagers on here who have more free time. At least for the next 3 months stay away from Reddit and/. except for brief headline browsing.
Slashdot comments will be filled with those who believe it must be an all or nothing concept and can't imagine talking to their phone all the time and make outlandish scenarios where like minded editors with karma mod them up.
While the rest of us see it and think yeah, I had that same idea about 5 years ago and would find it very useful in certain situations I run into frequently. At least I'd have it as an option when I couldn't use my hands or was multitasking. Nice article and then move on to the next...
Some of the basics are just fine - Like when I'm driving it's convenient to say "Call ***** mobile" and have it ring my girlfriend. But for most other applications (games, calendar, movies), I'm going to have to interact with my phone anyway just because of the nature of the activity. What use is it to say "Play Fight Club" if I'm not going to be holding and viewing the device?
Thankfully it would be optional for those instances. I actually see quite a bit of use for it and was disappointed with my iPhone's meager amount of commands that I never use and the activation of which takes too much effort, is not smooth. If I could treat it more like a personal assistant than an input device it would be nice, esp when driving. Ala star trek, "computer, captains log, make appointment on 15th of June, 3pm for tennis lessons". Computer, "Text Dave, 'hey dave want to play a game?" Computer, directions to business xyz. Computer, What is the 37.56 divided by 7? Computer send email to friend B, attach spreadsheet 123, send., etc.
I would think that creationists differ on the opinion either that A) God created the the entire universe and B) He created it just for us. Finding extra terrestrial life would only somewhat negate the opinion of the latter and could possibly strengthen the argument of the former.
The more time passes, the more it's hard not to look at Drake's equation and figure that he might have been onto something... if there's bazillions of planets, and a good chunk of those have moons, and a couple of those are in a habitable section... well, maybe it's possible that there is far more life in the universe than we've previously thought.
Hell, there could be life in this galaxy, and it would be still so far away as to make it something we could never find or get to. If there was just one or two civilizations in any galaxy, the universe would still have loads of them.
So. What. Unless we somehow rewrite the laws of physics we will never communicate or even know of them before our star burns out. While the search is a good reason to expand our tech and knowledge of our universe, when all is said and done, the Drake equation is really little more than a pastime in wishful thinking. Its just a logical formula based upon a lot of assumptions.
Which engineer? What area of expertise, which region of the country, etc? "Engineering" is too broad of a term and there are industries where engineering pays well, and some that don't. I can tell you right now, telecom based engineering jobs don't pay that much. For a lifetime, yes it is low but for less than 10 years? Hardly.
Problem is that it only works on OTA TV.
We don't watch the 5 channels that come over analogue, nor the (fucktifiknow) DVB channels that it can show; we have cable.
That's really a shame. In my area, we get around around 25 digital channels OTA (not including those religious only channels). That includes the major networks and a companion weather channel, 2 different music channels with videos, 2 PBS stations, spanish, kids channel, movie channel, and numerous other misc channels, many in HD. With that and shows being available on the web, if you have good net access there's really little reason to have cable. Even sports you can get streamed these days, free and legal. (Which is odd as ESPN streams many games on the web which with things like PlayOn or just plugging in your laptop to your TV, you remove m/any needs to get cable)
At least since the 80's. These were used in a local business museum (Enterprise Square USA) game called Venture. This is really old tech, the only thing remotely interesting is it's ability to now do multi-touch. What next, Pong in 3D!!
"We got no food, no jobs. Our pets HEADS ARE FALLING OFF!!!"
Interesting theory but once everyone is making more money b/c of said implementation, cost of goods will rise as well.

So would setting up a fake .inc and requiring them to give it to me (my only customer) at cost be cheaper than paying my $50/month ISP bill?

the only good blockbuster comic book movies were Watchmen and Dark Knight. .
Possibly. But in my opinion (and many others as well), both were highly overrated.
WTF is with the MIT link?

ahem.
Correlation != Causation.
ty.
Also "famous/success as an adult" != "better adult"
Course there's also the Virtual Laser Keyboard: http://www.virtual-laser-keyboard.com/
Or they could just use a Wiimote ala Johnny Lee: http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/
