    Aero changes the outward appearance of the interface, but all functionally remains identical. While some older programs may prompt Vista to disable Aero for the sake of compatibility, I've encountered no such program that required Aero is present and running.

    Also, could you provide some examples of programs that require some of the features offered in Vista Ultimate? Are we talking about dozens of programs here, or just two or three that you cherry picked?

    Nothing changed, you just didn't read closely enough. The problem was the proposed plan to let PC Makers customize different versions of Windows. Such a task is best left to the OS developer, not some jokers at Dell, HP, or Gateway.

    Microsoft knows best how to offer different versions of the same OS with bonus applications (Media Center) and capabilities (Bit Blocker) without causing comparability problems between programs installed between different flavors.

    It's been done before and the results weren't pretty. Not only slower in every regard, but when it comes to more advanced features like Pixel Sharers, WINE gets completely smoked.

    Linux isn't suited or intended for games. Results for this system simply aren't interesting to gamers.

    It's even worse than that. Intel is going to shut four plants and lay off 6,000 workers.

    I'm no business analyst, but obviously Linux (the netbook market in particular) is severely cutting into the profits of computer giants like Microsoft, Apple, Intel, and IBM. If you needed a sign for the year of Linux, this is it!

    Wrong. About the only source you could use to back up that claim would be troll fodder pumped out by the likes of Peter Gutmann, who himself doesn't really have a firm grasp of what he's talking about. As we can see with Modern Benchmarks, Vista can match or even beat XP in terms of performance.

    But wait, that can't be. You are stealing me that evil DRM hooks are stealing clock cycles. XP doesn't have those hooks, so how can it do worse in some tests?

    Not much different than the Linux zealot who hasn't touched a Windows machine since 1997 making up a bullshit story on the net about Windows XP taking 8 minutes to boot on his P4, but when they switched to Linux all their programs ran 325% faster under WINE. Others make up bogus stories about converting everyone from 90 year old grandmothers to mentally challenged school children. While they could not remember if they should click the left or right mouse button on Windows, they are now writing their own bash scripts.

    Lying trolls are a dime a dozen. The only exception here is someone is actually paying for them, when others get them for free without even trying. The motivation isn't money for some, but the game is the same.

    No, it was not. That is a little conspiracy theory that the most patriotic of Chinese will peddle as a catalyst for the Tiananmen Square protests. Blame the Americans rather than their own people. It has no basis in fact.

    You forget that the Chinese put a great deal of importance on "saving face", and really won't share some more private, internal matters, such as feelings of discord about the government with anyone who is not a close friend. You did not get an accurate picture.

    Not to mention there are a great deal of patriots, who would never speak ill of the government because they "Love China"

    It runs on Linux? So what else? This doesn't mean it will be a good camera. If my previous experiences with Linux are any indication, it sounds to me like it will be slow as molasses, taking eight full seconds from "power on" to "ready to snap". Arstechnica has a better article with far less fanboy hype.

    And so it continues.... The "Slashdot" that I have come to know and love over the past 9 years continues to degrade itself by linking to publications such as Boycot Novell, an amature looking troll-bait website preceded in it's ridiculousness only by one of it's founding authors, Roy Schestowitz. A man who, along with his well known counterpart who wrote the submission above, has been pretty accurately summerized in a previous posting.

    What Stallman needs to do is catch up with the biggest development in the computing world of the past 25 years.

    Not going to happen. This is a man who, by his own admission, doesn't surf the web. He doesn't go into detail, but I feel it's pretty safe to assume he doesn't want to defile himself by viewing a website that might be hosted or created with non-free software.

    The man is completely out of touch with today's computer users. Any why wouldn't he be? His legacy has been about holding onto the past. To maintain a world where people like him were the real power users. A lot of people give him far more credit than he truly deserves. There was free software before Stallman, it just didn't match his definition. His crusade is about trying to make his problem, our problem. No thanks.

    Open the Task Manager. On the bottom of the window you'll see the Physical Memory currently allocated to programs listed as a percentage. Now click on the "Performance Tab", you even get a cute green meter and history graph. It was there the whole time.

    Maybe you can share your stash with the rest of us? Over 2 gigabytes for an old ass RPG? I don't think you're reading the right numbers. Maybe you were using over 2 gigs in total with WOW, Firefox, and everything else you've got loaded up at the time. But 2 gigs for one game? No, not buying it. Show us a screen shot form Process Explorer, otherwise this is just troll fodder.

    15 FPS you say? Sure, that's possible. I can get the same thing in Source Engine games when I enable HDR and 4x AA at 1440x900. Can you really be sure you were using the same settings on your Linux box? Could you even enable Anti-aliasing, or even know what it is? Are you using the original drivers that shipped with your card?

    Your story just isn't credible, but it's sure is a nice bash on the gaming performance of Microsoft operating systems. Bravo.

    You came to that conclusion, but that doesn't make it right. I've had no trouble with my Linux router with Vista on my desktop and laptop machines. I did have trouble, with a horrible wireless configuration utility made by some idiots at Broadcom that would cause explorer to hang when the control panel applet was loaded. Never trust a program with an Icon that looks like it was made with MS Paint.

    Back on target, it's entirely possible that shoddy drivers are the reason you had problems. The OS being changed was only coincidental.

    The "Start" menu is the "Starting Point" when you are deciding what to do with your computer. Run a program? Change a setting? Open a recent Document? Turn off or reboot?

    Perhaps because ReactOS is "not recommended for everyday use", as indicated on it's website. I've used it. It's a cute idea, but about as stable as dynamite in a smelting plant.

    There is nothing simple about pulling 12+ inches of tape clear out of the cassette with a series of gears and belts then wrapping it half way around a spinning drum along with 2 other heads, then using a set of timing signals embedded in the tape to synchronize the drum and playback speed.

    I guess you've never had a kid pull and snap the tape without opening the door. While snapped tapes can be re-spliced, it's not an enjoyable affair. The child doesn't even have to break the tape, but just crinkle it enough so it will snag the playback heads on the deck and clog them with tape debris. You grossly overstate the reliability of VHS tapes.

    AnyDVD is a program for making backup copies of movies, not for watching movies on the computer. The copy would have the UOPs removed.

    5 to 10 minutes of mandatory filler? What exactly are you watching? I realize your exaggerating, but if you think you can cue up your VHS tape faster than I can start a DVD playing a major Hollywood title, you're crazy.
