Slow recording speeds (6 hour SLP) might be OK for you, but those of us that can still hear above 10,000 Hz the muddy sound quality is a severe problem.

You sound like you've never had a VCR with clogged heads or had to replace the loading deck and drive belts. VHS machines where a mechanical nightmare from the get go and NEVER offered reliable service. Tabulate the amount of man hours and service charges that went into VCR repair and replacement over the years and you'd see that even high end disk based units provide more value in the long run.

Using Windows Media Center, I have more capability and flexibility than you can imagine. All my shows are recorded. I can keep them or delete them instantly, back up shows to DVD in under 10 minutes, or transcode a program to my Palm TX and have it ready to take with me before I've had my shit, shower and shave. No subscription fee, ever, $0. Not to mention the time I've saved, which has far more value to me.

No offense, but if your panties are this tangled now, perhaps you should find other activities in your old age besides watching television. There is no way in hell I'd ever go back to VHS. They can bury you along with your old deck if you love it so much. The rest of us have better things to do with our time.

The sad part is, given the nature of how people are, they aren't going to think for themselves. They simply accepted WINE's clever name and slogan without any resistance. To think emulation is solely limited to transistor logic is simply wrong, but the fan's won't hear it. How dare you apply the stigma of imperfect emulation to their beloved project. Except, that isn't true. I haven't even seen one of these magical netbooks in the wild. Don't think I'm not looking around when I get dragged into a Starbucks. I don't see people using them. But who am I? Nobody. You can't judge the success of these things based on my sole observations. If only we had something else. Some fresh piece of evidence to draw a conclusion. Like this...

Netbooks market maker Asus, the champion for the past year of Linux advocates the world over, has confirmed that sales of Eee PC models pre-loaded with Linux have fallen in the wake of availability of Windows XP versions.

It's a bit of paradox. Linux doesn't sell because odds are most people who use it won't like it. Yet, Linux isn't popular enough to have enough negative karma, so most of the blockhead fanboys don't see how it can possibly fail. It's too bad Asus won't release the sales ratio. I'm sure it would have a lot of people around here eating crow.

Sure, Linux can sell when it's completely invisible. By that point, the OS hardly matters at all. It's the application that needs to run, and all Linux has to do it provide an environment to do it. It doesn't have to be a perfect environment. It doesn't matter if Linux is slower or more inefficient in a given area. The trusted Unix slogan of "good enough" rings true once again.

And it's not weird at all. The idea of lossless compression is to make it more convenient to use on devices with limited storage. Lossless is useful when storing music on hard drives, less so on smaller consumer devices. If you intend to use a portable player with 2 gig of memory for example, 320kps is certainly overkill. If there was a huge difference in quality past 192, you could argue that 320 is warranted, but testing has shown it is not. 320 is simply used because it's "as high as it will go" and is more in line with the "bigger is better" mentality.
