    The only people that mod you up are the idiots that don't know you are behind BoycottNovell.com, or actually believe even a quarter of the garbage you post to that site, newsgroups, and blogs.     Any idea as to how this machine got infected in the first place? Was the firewall disabled? Windows updates disabled? Who do you believe dropped the security ball in this instance?

    I'm also interested in why you can't remove the virus from inside Windows. While I have no personal experience with Conflicker myself and I haven't done bench work since 2006, in practice I found anything could be removed in safe mode with the right tools and knowledge.

    This entire question is pointless. Have her take the fucking course and be done with it. From the sounds of it, you should ONLY be using a hardware firewall with inbound protection only. You are too naive and paranoid to waste your time approving every little program that wants to have access. You would save a lot more time if you educated her on not installing crap she doesn't need. (i.e. Weatherbug)

    It's not so much that you don't know jack (in this instance), but your information is jacked up. As a Linux zealot, when cornered you will lie or fling out half-truths to come out on top. Always. Your example of talking to one brain dead "Windows Admin" shows more about your lack of personal contacts than it does about the group as a whole.

    It's quite possible, assuming your story is true, that when he was speaking about the "Event Viewer", he was speaking of tools on par with the Event Viewer used by Windows. Noting the ease of use and how it's organized. Not like the hodgepodge collection of text files spewed out all over the drive and the 3rd party tools cooked up to deal with them.

    Unix is not about "inventing" anything. It's about doing the same old bullshit the long way because conservative idiots fear change.

    I dropped half a grand for a few copies of Vista Ultimate upgrade. I didn't even hesititate.

    Yeah, for starters, it would have been a good idea to actually learn what was provided with the "ultimate" version verses the cheaper onces. A more educated choice would have been the "premium" version. Since you did upgrade, it's hard to know just how poor your hardware must have been, and I'm sure that was a contributing factor to any problems you had. In that case, any new machine from Apple would have won without taking anything else into consideration.

    As I've always said, people (like you in particular) will always blame Microsoft for their own gross ignorance.

    Vista twice trashed an XP system that was dual booting on the same system.

    Let that be a lesson to you. Never, ever, under any circumstances should you use a dual boot system, no matter what two Operating Systems are at play. It's the one surefire way to guarantee you will have problems down the road. You went asking for trouble, and it found you.

    If for some lame ass reason you need to go back and use XP, use VirtualBox or get a cheap spare hard drive.

    Bullshit, troll. But, I understand you'll want to exaggerate this to make your point. Of course, you won't mention that windows gives you the largest choice of software, period. That's the only reason you have a suppository (!) in Linux, because otherwise it would be to hard to find anything. Hell, pick most any category in Linux, I can find more choices on SnapFiles than you will find for Linux. That's a hard truth you won't EVER admit.

    He's right. . . 'ls' never has worked on the Windows machines I work on, no matter how often I try :)

    Though I find most Unix commands asinine, I was using LS on my Amiga for many years. I was so used to using it that when I moved over to Windows I downloaded a windows version of the same command.

    While using the OS with the largest install base, there is simply no excuse for not installing it yourself, but you'd rather cry about it.

    With all that you want to do, why the hell would you want to run Linux? In the time it takes you to tinker with WINE, you could have your Windows machine running perfectly, with all unneeded services disabled, updated drivers, and everything the way you want it. At the end, you have a machine that runs faster than your typical Linux install.

    So again... why run Linux? To enjoy the "freedom" Stallman evangelized?

    my partitions for "extra data" are formatted using the second extended filesystem (Linux's "base" stand file system) and read in Windows using ext2fsd because I don't want my data to be held hostage by Microsoft patents.

    Your problems are bigger than just Microsoft, and they will only be solved with the proper counseling and medication. Illogical paranoia of that level is only going to lead you further down a path of harm to yourself and those who care for you.

    Can you give us some samples? This just doesn't seem right, considering I've been able to run the everything from the OpenGL version of Quake 1 to some obscure TI 99/4a emulators.

    Explorer not only crashes at least once a day

    Try ShellExView. It will allow you to see what 3rd party extensions might be hooked to explorer, which is a classic cause of explorer related stability problems.

    C:\Users\Public. Brilliant.

    This was introduced with Vista.

    I just cancelled a 10-year Hotmail account and left to Gmail a few days ago because Microsoft thought that it would be cute to splice their own(poorly-implemented, I might add) version of MySpace into my goddamn e-mail account.

    You seem like the kind of hot-headed prick that makes rash (and ignorant) decisions out of anger. Case in point. Did you have to cancel your account? No. You could have done this:

    1. Upper right side of screen, click options.
    2. Select "More Options"
    3. Under "Customize your mail" select "Today page settings"
    4. Select "Skip the Today page and take me straight to my inbox" Done

    Blaming Microsoft for your own shortcomings. Classic.
