  2. Too funny.. on Interview with Andrew Tridgell, Samba Man · · Score: 1

"samba is not good enough to replace a production NT server yet."

I'm pretty convinced of the stability of it - we've been using it for years now in varying capacities... The trick for me now is to convince the powers that be that Samba is a viable replacement for NT as a PDC.

It's the same arguement that I have to make in favor of Hylafax. We've had it running on a production server since early '95. But now that we want to use it for our own purposes, everyone wants to know why Hyla is better than Winfax...

In our environment, OS/Linux wares make a ton of sense, but it's sometimes tough to get people to accept that we can't call a 1-800 number an beg for support on it either.

This will change in time, but it makes for interesting challenges from time to time.

OTOH, the job is getting easier. The same people that were asking about Samba/Hyla were also quite impressed with the price on Star Office vs. that of Word.

This is classic. "/. to the rescue".

I was just gathering resources to back up my POV that we should not be using NT for our PDC's, but rather samba. Needless to say, most of the existing doc's were rather dry, but this piece is a great caketopper!

Now let's hope my guys see the proper way of thinking...

I loved my Pro, but doggone it, just had to upgrade last December when 3Com handed out those niftly clear III cases at the Palm Devcon. What good was the case without the unit? . It was actually a worthwhile upgrade. (Pro to III) and while not everyone will make every upgrade, this is a good thing imho. Palm has never really forced anyone to upgrade...too bad we can't say that about more vendors...

Perhaps I'm just prone to arriving at slightly paranoid conclusions, but why are there similar messages about taking things to the next level by employing illegal tactics on most of the message boards that I have seen relating to the event on the 15th?

When IA64 becomes a reality both NT and Linux will be there (of course, Linux will be first :-) regardless of what SGI does and without SGI having to invest much anyway.

    Therein lies the key....

Are customers going to wait for NT if they need 64bit horsepower without spending a billion dollars on a high-end box?

Prolly not. The jump to a 64bit architecture will likely be a serious blow to NT in the market-place and give Linux a real serious jump, especially with SGI users...

Mark Anderson a great industry analyst that writes a newsletter called Strategic News Service went on the record on March 4, 1998 saying

"Microsoft is just making more money than they can hide.

I've been on the record for a couple of years now, claiming that MS has so
much cash socked away that they can produce any financial results they want
    to quarter by quarter.

Picture a bunch of shoe boxes in the back of Billg's office -- no, that's
too small. Picture a bunch of dumpsters in the basement of Building 8 on
the MS Redmond campus, all of them brand new and lined up, numbered, and
locked. Inside, picture compact stacks of thousand-dollar bills, each
dumpster filled to the very top, and the whole basement full of these, with
just a small maze-like walkway space left, just wide enough to get a small
handcart to any or all of these little green private banks.

You'll notice that Billg announced an increase in R and D expenditures last
week, from $2.9B to $4.9B or so. Big hit to earnings, right? You see,
they have run out of space in Building 8's basement ---

Of course, I am only half kidding.

It is really hard to hide that much money."

His comments were of course not issued in the context of the GAAP/SEC violations, but his views have become widely held in the industry.

Now we get to sit back and watch the circus come to town (or perhaps leave town if the allegations are un-provable)
