When I perform my coup and topple this useless government (and replace it with my dictatorial regime, ala Stalin), Predictive networks will be at the top of my payrolls!. Imagine how easy it will be for my NKVD to track dissidents, I'll be able to eliminate all of my rivals in months rather than years of great purges! This will mean a shorter gestation time for my revolutionary armies to march all over the face of the earth (mainly to France, I must conquer France). Since everything is or will be running on IP anyway, the dissidents will be forced to communicate by conventional mail to coordinate their attacks. Alas, the final piece is in place! Viva Napoleon!

Seriously though, western history over the past few hundred years has mirrored that of the early roman empire. In fact the similarities are quite striking. Right now our history lines right up with the late Republican period. As was the case for rome at the time, politics is becoming messier and messier, the US is failing to assimilate (culturally) its diverse citizens, and there's that whole economic divide thingy. But then we're SOOOOO civilized, nothing can happen to us- or at least that's what they said.

As Andrew Jackson proved with the enforcement of the indian removal act, the courts can make all the decisions they want, but the chief executive is still the one in charge.
(After Chief Justice Marshal ruled the act was unconstitutional, Jackson more less told Marshal to go ahead and try to enforce his decision, and Jackson moved the indians anyway)

At this point, (and for several years, if current trends continue) it is far cheaper to buy a second copy of a disk rather than throw it on a hard drive (let alone removable media). With the blue-laser DVDs (for High-Res/progressive scan eg HDTV) only a few years away, DVD's will be obsolete long before it is profitable to pirate. Mr Valenti's true colours are showing through. Not that I'm pro communist or prosocialist for that matter (in fact, I've benefited from capitalism more than the other 99%), but I would like to point out that the asperations of communism are some of the most noble ever imagined. Historicaly, the ideological basis for it was the establishment of a "perfect" society in which all who contribute are equal and nobody is exploited. The latter distortions resulted partly from leninism, and partly from variations on stalinism, but the underlying ideology (marxism) was absolutley humanitarean. By the way, communism espoused the need for an "international" effort to abolish national and ethnic affiliations so all may live in harmony. Freaky Utopian?- Absolutely.---- Racist? Hardly.

Anyone who would stop the telling of a story about the holocaust is racist

Someone needs to write a detailed article on the similarities between marxism and open-source. In a way, open source is the closest the world has ever come to seeing the views expressed by Marx in his latter writings (specificly Das Capital, as the Communist Manifesto didn't truly express his views - It was commisioned by a radical revolutionary group advocating violant overthrow). The enviroment in which the open source exists today in the world of computers has many similarities to that of the industrial society in which the socialist movement blossomed in the 19th century. Examples to cite- -Similarities between colective and from each-to each production/distribution models -Similerities between the "plus value" economic model layed out in Das Capital and the views held by many programers about the uselessness of the corporations -Similer paths of divergance from the main movement towards unlawful and destructive means by the latter anarchists (led by, among others Bakunin) and the cracker/script kiddies (I shouldn't name a leader here as there are few historicly accepted leaders who would be happy with this distinction- anyway the lack of coherence in the movement means it will be years before a leader is recognized in their historical context (it'll probably be mitnick though) I could go on but I've said to much.
