Why would any customer care if it is profitable or not? The key question for the customer is if it is SUSTAINABLE and I think with Android it definitely is.
I was just going to post the same. Look at the totality of facebook and tell me, honestly, how many people on there are practicing reasonable time management and how many are using the site to pass useful knowledge as opposed to wasting time?
I've heard time and time again that Windows based tablets blow because of lack of touch support, that is why the iPad OS rocks, etc etc. Does it then seem a tad ironic to anyone that it suddenly becomes all good again when you are accessing that Windows desktop *through* and iPad??
Sure I guess if Britney Spears can sell, so can the iPad. Is it a good thing that either sell? Definitely not. But such is life, generally the nice looking thing wins out over substance.
Well yes therein lies the rub. I too was looking at rescue but the way logmein pay subscriptions are set up it seems they are really geared to someone who supporting other users 8 hours a day 5 days a week or more. I'd be willing to pay $5 or so an instance but otherwise I can't justify it either.
What I mean is, it should be a single.exe that opens up your machine; think portable app. Going through a windows install process and having a service running on the machine forever after until uninstall may be appropriate for a machine that needs to stay online but for one shot support there is no need for all of that. User should download an.exe and run it and click OK to open their desktop and close the app to lock it back up again.
As a person that is considering logmein as a support tool there are three things I don't like about it:
1) It doesn't support linux
2) Requirement to install an agent on the target machine is an unnecessary complication for the end user
3) It is third party
Of course a good thing about it is the encryption, although I could not see from the logmein site whether that is end to end or merely encrypting across each internet leg.
If this project addresses any of the three points above I will be very interested in it.
Actually I agree with this.. I was going to post asking what goodness exists even in 10.04.. Facebook this cloud that... Personally I don't CARE. What INTERNAL things are better?
Oh sure Google too. At least Apple's participation is just incidental. Google's entire business model is anti-privacy, along with facebook. At one time the only Google product I used was google Reader. Then I read that they were awarding a prize to the biggest users and they divulged that they knew EVERYTHING about you when you were in there; the articles you read, how long you spent in each article, if you visited the page etc. That turned my stomach so bad I eventually switched to a standalone reader that was portable so I could sync it with my home machine through ssh.
I find it absolutely hilarious when people say they use google docs to share documents for their work.
So far most of these new devices seem to have a huge tradeoff.. Privacy. There are very few apps on my iPod touch that allow me to keep my stuff within the confines of my home; especially if I am on the road and not on my own netwok. Until these privacy concerns are addressed I would hope PCs survive, otherwise the tech industry has done a monumental disservice to everyone. This all sums up my main dislike for Apple.
(I'm a sysadmin as well) I think IT sucks as a whole because it is a scientific field that was thrown to the wolves of commercialism. The computer is a petri dish in which great things can happen; but everything must work together in its entirety. Commercial entities refuse to work together, standards are open to interpretation or manipulation and you get an absolute mess. I think Apple is really aiming to achieve this harmony (I will set aside the fact that it is completely self-serving for now) but they have such a small corner of the market that they reduce their machines to a very small subset of what can be done in the name of just getting things to work effortlessly (and yes even OS/X is minimal in capability).
Everyone contributing to a single system must buy in to a common good of making that system work, and they just don't.
I occasionally put websites together for small businesses and it seems increasingly hard to get these kinds of websites known. Google seems to be more and more indexing websites with lots of content and now with speedier response which will completely slant their rankings towards large companies with huge resources.
For example, I did a website for a lady that sells garden and landscaping lighting local to where I am from. Her business focus is not one that needs a large web page, she just wants her catalog to display basically but she does want people to find her with Google. I've done all the things like making sure the title is accurate and headers are relevant, etc. However, it seems to me that much of it is futile. Unless she is the type of business that focuses on inviting people to add content to her site (in other words an internet/web business) the sad truth is that she will basically get ignored by Google.
Yeah I didn't word that well.. I meant:
I have this network all through my house, why should I use a server 1000 miles away to sync something with my basement.
This is exactly my point. As far as I am concerned, until there are standards restricting these guys on how they lock everything down when you upload your stuff to the cloud you might as well be posting it on YouTube
How about being able to sync with machines in my house without having to go OUT of my house? Surely the average Linux user isn't so sold on 'the cloud' ?
I'm confused about this bill... Some honest questions:
1) What is in it to stop the premiums going up as the money from subsidies comes in? In other words, will the basic laws of supply and demand in a free market not still apply? This bill does not seem to limit the dynamics of the free market.
2) What will stop the insurance companies from making their own rules that slowly erode the value of coverage by limiting the treatments that they pay for?
3) How will someone who is poor be ensured the same treatments as someone who is wealthy?
From what I have been reading, these have been the biggest issues with US health care, does the bill do anything about this? Making sure 'everyone has something' seems to be a drop in the bucket to me; or am I missing something?
Please don't label me a troll for these questions.. I think they are important questions.
Non-American here.. can you explain how this bill limits the insurance companies at all? The free market system being what it is, it seems to me that premiums will just go up as the flood of subsidy money comes into the market.
.. because I have OVPN in my home and my iPod Touch is a no go / f*ck you on OpenVPN even if jailbroken.

I know about 5% of VIM and that does everything I need in a text editor. I always wonder why the other 95% was created and who the heck uses it.

From someone that just watched a TV show and wrote an article at the same time on the bus today with his netbook, you suck.

Regarding Hollywood's originality these days:
Avatar and Pocahantus.
Get my point?
I second this. I've been using Beyond Compare for close to 10 years now.

Exactly, so how does she expect to get found through Google? Is the answer simply that she can't?
I searched on " garden lighting" and went six pages deep and don't even see the site.

So basically you're saying go with google or we are all screwed? I sincerely hope you are not an IT consultant.
Scratch that, you're probably Yale's IT consultant.
