Some time ago I *had to* try to help a 6-year old kid - lost and frightened, crying his heart out - absolutely nobody nearby seemed to care. He'd just moved into the neighborhood. I took him by the hand and walked around with him until he suddenly recognized the house and ran home. Only then did I realize that I had just made myself a target for "pedo!!" accusations...
Please mod parent further up. I might add to the culpability of the school admins that didn't renew the anti-malware programs this: Why use at all a system that so badly needs extra protection?
However - why wasn't the defense allowed to produce the exact same evidence that was later shown to exonerate her? The defense expert witness clearly proved that her computer was infected with malware.
You're right, FOSS doesn't have to use the "threat" word. I use FOSS for my own sake, not to hit out at Microsoft ( "that will be a totally unintended side effect")
However, Microsoft seems to regard any competition at all as a threat, whether or not the competitor is in a position to influence Microsoft's revenue. Hence the refusal to implement ODF.
(I have found that the most effective way to promote Linux in the workplace is "show, don't tell". There's a large number of presentations and whitepapers flying around the intranet, but they seem to be very largely ignored. Rants on/. or anywhere else have absolutely zero effect on companies that have put their misplaced trust in Microsoft.)
The parents in this case wrote this letter not to alleviate the game manufacturers but to alleviate themselves from the guilt and responsibility or being irresponsible parents
Did you actually read the letter? If so, could you please come up with an example of what they should have done?

SCO Vs. Groklaw

Actually, the tone of TFA is quite surprising, given DLs previous history of sneering diatribes. This one could actually be described as journalism, the EFF blunder just a part of a journalist's SOP. Maybe he has learned a little on the job.
But I do remember a little bit of what happened to Susan/Shiksaa of NANAe just a few months before Groklaw began, and it's a good thing that PJ has managed to stay hidden. Any TLC (TINC) members here who could tell?
Just in case parent isn't modded up, or doesn't log in to repost, here's what he wrote for the benefit of those who skip ACs. AFAIK it's dead right and should be pointed out very clearly!
No, they didn't think the Earth was flat at Columbus' time. They even knew the approximate circumference of the Earth, which is why they (correctly) thought Columbus was a crackpot. He thought the Earth was a lot smaller, therefore it'd be a relatively short trip across the Atlantic to India. This was obviously wrong, but he got very lucky and there was something else there ("West Indies") so they didn't all die.
I'm a KDE user, but for some reason I couldn't get Kubuntu installed. So I installed Ubuntu, and added the kde desktop package, don't remember the exact name right now. Getting CUPS to run was a nightmare at first, but there's help out there and once I actually read the README file it worked. There's a legacy SUSE on this laptop, but all 3 desktops in the house are running Ubuntu, with users from 7 to 64 years og age:-) ( yes, several users per PC)
I installed it and tried in in Word 2003 on a small, simple documents. I noticed that when the result file was loaded into Writer, it looked at first glance the same as if Writer had loaded a.doc file - e.g. white page background turns red, numbered section headers lost the numbering. I'll have a closer look and do the round-trip test, but it seems that the Windows team has exactly the same difficulties that OOo has in the conversion? Someone(TM) should perhaps compare some code here - not to point any blaming fingers, but to make the code better, in the best spirit of FOSS... In the meantime, I'll just stick with OOo as it fills my needs completely. Well, almost, but there's also LyX/LaTeX.
they started me down my own road of finding my own path of discovery
Exactly. For me. the main "message" I get from RAHs books is "use your own brains, dammit - ". Somewhat like Ted Sturgeon's "always ask the next question".
Ahh - thanks. I didn't know where Ralph came from when he walked into Callahan's Place that first time...
About Variable Star - I found it fascinating how real Heinlein characters spoke in Robinson's voice. There was no mistaking either characters or voice.
I seem to recall we were doing quite well before oil was found in the North Sea... Neither Finland nor Sweden has any oil, and the standard of living is comparable in all three countries.
Norway is still saving up income from oil and gas into the world's largest pension fund, someone remarked recently that there was enough money in the fund to buy Manhattan:-)
Ah so. There are slim, active type 2 diabetics who manage to keep their blood glucose levels normal by diet and exercise. By your definition they are cured? By any other test they are still diabetics.

- If you need Tivoli, you know where to get it, if not, Nagios may be what you need.
- Lose the attitude, son.
(I do not normally say "son" to an AC, but the childishness of the post plus my belief that I am older made me do itI have a 4-digit UID and seven grandchildren, you insensitive clod!
s/Paula/Pamela/ and she's back. You really should read Groklaw, you know.

Mod parent up, insightful. Or maybe the author would care to re-post while logged in?
"Pulling together is the aim of despotism and tyranny. Free men pull in all kinds of directions. It's the only way to make progress."
Lord Vetinari, in "The Truth" by Terry Pratchett.
I think he's got a point.
Of course. He's a natural for that Place. I wonder what happened to his companion? Disappeared without a trace after that first story ...

Everyone who has only read Bernstein's study, you mean. Thanks, but no thanks, I'll stick to the peer-reviewed ones.
Thanks for the laugh - they are few and far between in this thread :-)
