Not quite true for me: Maya and Blender work fine. In fact, Maya is noticeably faster that it is on Windows 7 on the same machine, and I have taken no special steps to make it faster on Linux. I am using the laziest Linux distribution there is (Wubi Ubuntu, click click click until you have a working OS)

Minecraft is faster and more solid too (not exactly a CAD, but it uses GPUs if I am not mistaken)

It's like going from hotmail to gmail back when it launched.

Google did something very, very clever; sit back and wait (develop in the shadows, actually) while people where getting more and more frustrated with Facebook (like they were with Hotmail), and feeling that they got "stuck with it" because of the lack of alternatives. That part was bound to happen.

You manage your "friends" easily. [..] I wouldn't have any issue adding my boss and co-workers to, unlike facebook.

In a sense, Google has learned from the mistakes of others; I still cannot fathom why Facebook did not add such functionalities - so many of its users would had welcomed them. Perhaps their coding skills are poor, or they are more busy trying to hire marketing people instead of coders, to figure out how they can sell your information to third parties more efficiently.

The cynic in me is eager to yell that "they are the same shit, all of them"; though I have to hand it to Google that they played this one very smooth; Facebook has had a hard time making a sensible file out of you; who are your closest friends? Who are the relatives, coworkers, and who are the "people you just know"? With Google+ interface, it is the user is completing this task for Google

Per the Hotmail/Gmail analogy, Google has the reputation of being more geeky; you want to use Google because you get a sense that you actually do creative stuff, they develop and give new functionalities out and they keep it alive. And it does keep you a notch over the flock, making you feel special - c'mon, you know it does.

I am absolutely confident that their interface will be getting better and better for decades to come- they will expand and develop and incorporate new technologies. But now, profiling will reach levels never seen before- the fraction of your online time logged with Google will be enormous - let us see how Google will handle that.
