I love how you say "our" response as if the electorate hasn't been dragged along like a bull with a ring through its nose. Keep in mind that having a democratic society depends entirely upon having an informed electorate. Test how informed that electorate is; go out into the world and try talking about economics, politics, technology, or how mathematics applies to any of them. Go ahead. See what happens.

  8. The point is moot on Paul Graham: Let the Other 95% of Great Programmers In · · Score: 1

I feel the points drawn up in this discussion, and by this article are very moot. I've browsed the comments and many are very good, and the topics are broad and far-reaching. I've ignored the article because it is drivel, propaganda, and as many commenters have pointed out, self-serving salesmanship.
But there's a very important point that I'd like to bring up which casts all of this aside as moot:
Everyone is assuming that they want more programmers in the US. Everyone is assuming that they want the US to remain a technological superpower.
I don't believe they do. Example: The University of Florida, a couple years ago, announced the closure of its computer science department, with the intention of focusing more the liberal arts, and on sports. No matter that it was in the wake of anon-ops and similar hacktivist actions which sincerely pissed off the established powerbase.

I won't even read TFA nor even the excerpt. The credentials of the author say it all. We should be looking forward to a collapse of such a harmful and destructive system.

Why wasn't this done years and years ago by someone independent? A quick browse through the report shows that data does not appear to be difficult to acquire. In fact, my local authority (bchydro.com) has a lot of this data for their jurisdiction on their website. It makes me wonder if the governments of Canada and the US have this stuff freely available online where one doesn't even have to phone and give credentials before obtaining it.

So why is this report by a thinktank being kept secret? Because they were paid to do so, that's why.

But why is no one outside the paid-thinktanks coming up with any of these kinds of conclusions? Really, do we have to pay people to think now too?

Fortunately, they were never really into videogames.

And everyone who thinks he was wrong is an idiot, who lives in a fantasy world where making sure children are never exposed to violence will produce a world where there is never violence. The only way to stop violence is to be sure that everyone can defend themselves, educate everyone regarding why violence shouldn't be done, and the effect it has on others, and by removing the reasons to do violence in our society, eg scarcity.
