Corel promised to support Microsoft's ".NET", whatever it really is. I have no idea how, and what will Corel do with its Linux software -- ".NET" is
supposed to be tied to Windows.
I was curious about this too. Aparently.NET refers to Microsoft.net... whose welcome screen reads:
From what I gather -("new offerings (that will)deliver the reliability, performance, scalability, and manageability required for enterprise solutions") MS is planning on co-branding Corel Linux... how else can they get such features into an enterprise server?
"Microsoft's.NET Enterprise Servers provide the fastest
way to integrate, manage, and Web-enable your
enterprise business. Find out how these new offerings
deliver the reliability, performance, scalability, and
manageability required for enterprise solutions."
How many times does Microsoft have to get caught with their pants down before they decide to purchase a belt?
At least they're starting to pay attention to public opinion! Maybe they'll lighten up on the NTFS/Linux legal proceedings if we all send a letter of disgust to the boyz in Redmond.
It appears to us that some people are downloading two and even three times to different formats-to the Palm Pilot say, and also to
whatever Microsoft uses. This may be based on a simple misperception. Let me put it this way: you couldn't go into a bookstore and say, "I
want you to give me the paperback version and the audio version of this book free because I bought the hardcover." As simply as I can put
it, you must pay for what you take every time you take it or this won't work."
I think Stephen has missed the point on this one. - let me explain.
If I buy the hardcover book - true - I am not entitled to the audio or paperback version... but under fair use I CAN scan it into my PC (and create an E-book), photocopy it and wallpaper my bathroom with the pages, take pictures of the pages and make a slide show... etc. I am excercising my right to FAIR USE
Same for the e-book purchasers. They purchased a license to the electronic version of the book - so if they want to put a copy on their PC AND their palm pilot.... that's covered under fair use.
Why should anyone really care what Metallica have to say about anything?
More importantly - why should any large university pay attention to what any rock band have to say! It's not like Lars is a member of the alumni that donates money... Maybe if Lars and the boys bought some new football jerseys or marching band uniforms for the colleges they can get the recognition that they're looking for.
IMHO, the whole napster thing got WAY out of hand. Artists were getting FREE EXPOSURE via napster.
When artists want to cry about piracy or copyright violations - they should cry to the police departments in every major city.
In NYC, for example - on almost every street corner in the Wall St. Area (esp. Fulton St) there's some guy with bootleg CDs on a card table.
These guys aren't downloading albums from Napster, and ripping them onto CDs! They're big-time bootleggers - this is where the artists are truly losing money.
Alot of times I've downloaded MP3's because I was curious about a band. If I liked the band I would go out and buy their cd (mostly for artwork, lyrics, etc).
So now all the major record labels just lost the BEST free advertising campaign they could ever get. And they can thank everyone's favourite loud-mouthed mullet - Jackass Lars.
"Sendmail and staroffice aren't beta and should have gone into this release, the rest are probably too bleeding edge. Anyone think of anything I've missed?"
Does RedHat still pimp out Applixware? If so, why would they even think of including StarOffice with their distrobution?
It would be like Microshaft including Nutscrape Navigator in their next OS instead of including Internet Exploder.
Microsoft should spend more time eradicating bugs, stablizing the UI and securing their operating systems, and less time spent on all the eyecandy and other crap.
Isn't PDC an acronym for Primary Domain Controller

Microsoft PDC Journal

I thought Microsoft had designated PDC to stand for "Primary Domain Controller". Did Microsoft change this around too?
My take is that MS keeps changing stuff around so they APPEAR to always be releasing new technology, and that they can now force the "Microsoft Army" of MCSE's and MSD's to go back to their little training seminars, buy more books from Microsoft Press, and waste more time.
I read in the Wall St. Journal this morning that SBC is giving out free PC's to people who sign up for their xDSL service for a period of 2 years. The price of the xDSL is a little higher, but that pays for some of the cost of the PC. SBC said that they'll recoup the money on labor costs because they won't have to send out technicians to the homes because the PCs will be shipped pre-configured. I would imagine that they're also planning on making money over time by keeping the customer. Sounds like someone at SBC actually had a good idea!
I was told that Microsoft designs their operating systems on Compaq computers. Specifically NT on proliant servers.
Maybe if Slackware, Redhat, and the rest of the distros developed on one specific brand (Dell, IBM, etc..) it would help the general public get over their fears of compatibility issues.
I remember seeing Sylvester from Looney tunes trying to teach his nephew how to catch a mouse. A box fell out of a truck or train, and it had a baby kangaroo in it... and it may have been a boxing kangaroo.

We meaning the Linux community.... not the /. community
(although two overlap in certain areas /.=! Linux community and vice-versa)

Time to buy a "Speak & Spell"(tm).
It's "telescope" NOT "tellescope".
(figues - another anonymous coward)
YOUR WELCOME!
What a better way to open the public funds for space funding than with fear!
(otherwise, why the hell would anyone want to give money to build another "stupid telescope").
*sigh*
It's give the .gov a WONDERFUL excuse to "annex" some poor 3rd world nation.
In the name of "intergalactic free trade" or some other stupid buzzphrase written by some suited spin doctor in D.C.
(* it still sounds like a far-fetched idea! *)
www.bird.peen.us
www.fish.peen.us
www.troll.with.us
and the 31337
morewarez.for.us
try.and.hack.us
and the pr0n sites....
cum.with.us
suck.us
f*ck.us
etc.....
it could get equally scary as it is creative.
Besides - I don't think they'd give anything away when there's money to be made!!!
I smell a hoax.
It's one thing to auction off furbies, pokemon, and other crap, but URANIUM????
Sounds like a load of hooey.

IF so - how many keys/sec. can it crack?
Or can I use it to rip MP3's? store pr0n? Hide from LARS on Napster?
"Like another legendary creature whose name also ends in 'x,'"
What "creature could they mean"?
The Lorax? The Sphynx?

I'm so glad that I'm in a Unix shop now
Last week the mail servers on the @home network went crazy!
Anyone know if they were installing Carnivore, or was it just another day at the comcast monkey cage... err NOC.
They misplaced my e-mail for 4 days, and I was recieving some other user's e-mail... not good!
I'll stick to my .26 dot pitch viewsonic flatscreen monitor.... at least for a few years!
I could think of alot of other things to spend $10,000 on....
Alfred E. Newman was always goofier looking than Melvin the janitor guy.
Besides, I always liked Don Martin and Sergio Aronges.
The .gov is watching EVERYTHING we do online!!!
That "penisbird" is not just a harmless troll... it's probably a government fronted spy operation.

*lol*
I was going to say the same thing.
The pr0n sites should be selling these keyboards on their sites promoting "faster web surfing" or some other marketing ploy.
How long will it take a guys wife/girlfriend to figure out what the keyboard is for tho?
I remember seeing Sylvester from Looney tunes trying to teach his nephew how to catch a mouse. A box fell out of a truck or train, and it had a baby kangaroo in it... and it may have been a boxing kangaroo.
Silly Aussies... they're roos not mice!
Isn't a v.92 protocol in today's day and age somwwhat pointless?
Maybe the 2.88 floppy will make a revival!
*groan*
