Really, this is the kind of remark best ignored rather than obsessing or getting upset over. Company execs talk nonsense all the time. I mean what do you expect him to day "Oh dear, this new OS will cut into our sales, as Linux has been doing and will continue doing for the foreseeable future"? Didn't think so.

Let him talk, just nod politely and continue compiling your kernel.

I agree with you about most of that, except I really have no problem using my N1 for input, even when it's cold.

Here's the thing though. I didn't get the N1 because it's a good phone. I got it because it's a cool little mobile computer. Honestly I don't really need to be able to use a web browser or email client without looking at the screen (:

One of the nice things about an N1 (as opposed to, say, an iPhone) is that I can go to the developers forum(s) and put in a feature request to, say, have the phone answer by holding the trackball. There's pretty good odds that someone will do that.

When I use my thin (i.e., down to 40 degrees) gloves, my Nexus One works just fine. I can also use it through plastic bags and clothing, which is a bit weird when you're trying to clean some smudges off the screen with your shirt (and yes, I have a screen protector).

However, it does get down to -40 around here and nobody makes gloves that'll work on a screen when it's THAT cold. That's more about the gloves being crazy thick/insulating, though. I suppose I could sew some conductive thread through my gloves on my own, but then that'll conduct the cold right into my gloves, too.

Which is why I wish my phone had SOME physical buttons, say, for ANSWERING and HANGING UP. It's a bit ridiculous to have to take my gloves off to answer a call by swiping across the screen.

I might use a few Gnome applications, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. I use Window Maker as my window manager, I use aterm for terminals, I use alpine for email, I use emacs/xemacs for editing.

Due to a bug in xorg in Ubuntu 10.10 which caused many applications to crash when using xinerama, including Window Maker, I was forced to use Gnome for a few days. It was pretty horrible.

I don't really care what Ubuntu's standard desktop is, I can still use whichever one I want.

Yeah, but the article presented this as the end of traditional HDDs. In my opinion this is nothing of the sort.

As I mentioned, yes, it makes sense for laptops/portables if you want the extra speed, but for desktops/home/home-office servers where you need the space and do a LOT more reads/writes? Not so much.

50 cents per gb is cheap?

I'm no math genius, but wouldn't that make 1TB be about $500? The absolute hugest spinning-platter harddrive, the just-announced Western Digital Green 3TB drive costs less than HALF that ($239 at newegg) for three times the storage, and a 1tb can be had for $60.

Until SSD prices get much, MUCH closer to that range, and until someone can reassure me that they'll last for several years of heavy use, the only way I'll use one in my desktop is an OS-only-quick-boot drive.

Yeah, it might be worth the extra money on laptops, but some of us still have desktops, and RAID arrays, and we'd rather not spend $10K on something we can get for $1K and might not even give us a performance boost or last.

    3. My camera now takes much larger photos, and it takes more power to process them.

    4. My video camera now shoots hidef video, which, again, requires a lot more power to process.

"Faster HDD" has always been part of my upgrade path, though, so when I get a new 2011 MBP and THAT starts getting slow (around 2013) I'll probably get an SDD for it.
