  1. Watch out for SanDisk SD cards on Fatal WeaknessWith High-Capacity MMC/SD Cards? · · Score: 3, Informative

In the Sharp Zaurus Linux PDA community, many have shied away from SanDisk's SD cards. Their 128MB and 256MB had many problems with the Zaurus. Things are supposedly better now but you still hear about SanDisk SD problems with brand new cards and the latest Sharp ROM.

I've used a 128MB Lexar, formatted as FAT16 and things have worked well. Many have used an SD card as main storage on their Zauruses, formatted as ext2.

What if you wanted an encrypted filesystem? That absolutely kills the CPU. Hardware acceleration for this would be perfect. I'd also prefer the chip that would do this to not be on the PCI bus which is getting more and more saturated these days.

What if you use scp and rsync over ssh extensively for network management? Flooding a 100Mbps link with encrypted traffic takes quite a bit of CPU.

Also, the Demoscene tradition regarding CD-ROMs (and now DVDs) of scene productions is if your work is on the disc, you or your group gets a free one. I believe that is the case with Mindcandy as well.

While the Sharp rom on the SL-5500 leaves your hands tied and dedicates the 64MB built-in ram 50/50 to ramdisk and available RAM, various custom ROM images like the Crow rom and OpenZaurus let you move the ramdisk to an SD flash card while freeing up all 64MB for usable RAM.

Having only 32MB for main memory REALLY ties your hands. Is SDRAM really so expensive that Sharp couldn't have used 64MB for main memory?

The problem is especially rampant in DSM cars (Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser) manufactured between 1989 and 1994. I know because it happened to me. All the big electrolytic capacitors leaked all over the place, pretty much destroying the board. One of the symptoms is a 'rotten seafood smell' coming from behind the console. :)
