I know lots of people who are paid to develop free software, but only two who develop proprietary software. The proprietary developers hate their company, their work, and are looking for someplace more open. I think it's already been proven that most developers write software for in-house projects, not shrink wrapped goods.

I think the firewire failing had more to do with the high royalties that Apple demanded than anything else... that was the reason why USB cards were going for 1/10th the cost of firewire cards for years - the silicone certainly did not cost any more to make. Apple and Sony are often just too greedy for their own good. That Apple resisted that temptation with iTunes songs still suprises me - I think they must of come up with the pricing while Jobs was out on a sick day.

It makes me sad to say this, but we really do need some kind of law against "rebates" and, what does Microsoft call it, "matching marketing funds"? These companies can not play fairly, and these accounting tricks need to be outlawed because that is all they are - accounting tricks to obscure bribes. Maybe something along the lines of outlawing these shady accounting practices for all publicly traded companies.

It's a small tech company, and the CEO thinks he is sharper than he actually is, but as far as calling, he did try that route, but he was in South America, and could not get a call through while he was down there. That's the pain really, there is no problem as long as you do everything Microsoft thinks you should, but in real life things tend to happen, and it's nice not to have your software lock you out because you are in a situation that Microsoft failed to envision. I support users in the US that will ocasionally take notebooks to places where they have no phone or internet service. Well, XP does have one additional goodie.... I know of a couple companies that would rather not bother with product activation.

The best story I know of personally is with a notebook demanding reactivation for hardware changes during an XP trial while the user was on the road in a remote location with no way to activate... to bad it was the CEO's notebook. I guess these companies pushing product activation just can not understand why some customers resent being treated as copyright infringers.

Don't forget about your example that Internet Explorer was not originally a Microsoft product:
    • They took the code from a project called Mosiac
    • They made a deal with a company called Spyglass to use their source code from Mosiac
    • The deal was for a small quarterly payment and a big percentage of sales of Internet Explorer
    • They screwed both Netscape and their partner Mosiac by giving it away for free - undercutting the competition and avoiding all royalties to Spyglass - putting them out of business also.
So maybe they just could not find any BSD based CLI or naive proprietary company to screw out of a good CLI? You have to admit though - that is quite some business innovation - Bill's pure genius at it's best. I heard Spyglass finally got a few million out of their lawsuit. It just amazes me that people don't remember these things.

If slashdot is smart enough to limit post to a subset of html codes and list the domains of links, why are graphical email client programmers not smart enough to do the same? I agree, but the other trouble that I see, that Palm does not seem to have addressed yet, is issues with their desktop and sync software. This is especially evident on OS X, where syncing is a terrible mess. (e.g. try putting a multi-day event in iCal.) I can not see any down side to Palm releasing all their versions of hotsync under the GPL, it would open so many possiblities to them.... As for their desktop software, I know of very few people who like it or use it, on any platform. I think they would be better off transitioning to Novell's Evolution. It is being ported to Windows now, and somewhat runs under OS X. The thing is, with Palm's support, it could run well under Linux, Windows, and OS X; - it supports Exchange and Novell's groupware products; they could bundle all three versions with their pdas; and they would no longer be dependant on Microsoft for help with Outlook. I just don't understand why they have not done so yet.
