No, you need new politicians. Which, in the UK's case, means you're due for another round of governance by the Tories. So you're basically fucked.
But...but...the UK has more than two major political parties. Doesn't that mean they have a utopia? Because that's what everyone here likes to say the US' problem is.
And perhaps you don't know that the upcoming GIMP 2.8 will feature a "single window mode".
Unless the GIMP team has a time machine, I think his points are valid. At least the GIMP fanboys aren't as bad as the Blender fanboys who will tell you to your face that Blender's GUI isn't confusing...
Actually pension funds tend to be more vocal than most shareholders when they think something's going wrong. That's why you see the not infrequent news articles about beleaguered execs meeting with pension fund managers to plead his case why they shouldn't throw his ass out.
Is there room in your world view for the possibility that most people do not have a price, and are not for sale? Not everyone is a ravenous consumer out grubbing for every thin dime they can get their hands on... some people actually choose the businesses they patronize because they respect them and wish to support their ongoing operation.
Agreed, I firmly believe in your statement. However, I could shall we say be "persuaded" to reject it in favor of his world view, if he makes it worth my while.
and are provided a pension plan that absolves them from having to pay the social security "tax" every paycheck like the rest of us who probably won't even get anything out of it.
Pension plans are a lot less secure than social security.
The stranglehold they have against reform and removing incompetent teachers is legendary, I won't even bother going into how hard it is to fire a teacher in most places.
Oh give me a break, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. The unions generally get it into their contract that you can't be fired just because the principal doesn't like the shirt you came in one day with. In order to fire a teacher you have to document it, and give the teacher a chance to respond to any accusations, but most principals are too lazy to actually do that so they just start whining about how hard it is, and how mean the unions are, and then people like you take up the whining.
Somebody needs to explain some things to these folks. It's not that hard: you install LTSP on a server, all the clients boot to the network. Install all the software you want on the server. If instead of (or in addition to) thin client/shared desktop you want an image on the desktop you configure the PXE server to dish an installer image.
Ok, stop for a second and re-read what you wrote, but this time pretend you're not someone who is knowledgeable about computers.
Both approaches have their merits and drawbacks, so I won't judge that three year degree, and I agree it means you're most likely up to whatever job your degree is in. Like I said, I personally preferred the broader education, but YMMV.
The one thing I will say, and I am sure I will offend some Brits here, is that I do think in those fields in the US where a graduate degree is mandatory (thinking medicine and law), Americans actually do receive more rigorous training. Let the anger flow.
So how do I buy into this one of these largest of corporations?
If you're in a pension plan you're already in. I know it's fashionable here to envision this shadowy cabal of rich people calling the shots, but the most powerful shareholders in a lot of very large companies are pension funds, held by the little guy.
Not solely I'd guess, but it's definitely a US thing. Probably the reason a US degree is 4 years instead of 3. Personally I liked immersing myself in advanced classes in a wide variety of subjects and would have hated only having to stick with one subject.
That's the sad part that most people don't realize -- that, EVEN if they were paying monthly(*), getting a Tivo or other DVR(**) likely would SAVE them money in the long run, and be less junky than the cable DVRs.
What a lot of people don't realize is you can stop paying for cable, and not get a Tivo or other DVR, and save even more money. Then you can read, go outside, etc.
Are these truly unique apps or are most trivial differences (app#1 main icon is blue, app#2 main icon is red...)
Ahh, so you're familiar with the Ubuntu repositories.
I mean yes and no.
Makes me wonder if they are even professional designers, and if so, if they have a job. My hunch is no and no. :)
Could be yes or no. Where I live "freelance designer" is a euphemism for unemployed.

if you're used to Photoshop. Gimp is a lot more intuitive than Photoshop if you're used to Gimp.
That's not what intuitive means...

Now that's a slashdot article title I think we can all approve of.

Parents don't care, or they care too much?
I think the issue is, they care about their kids' grades, but not about their education.

They make 6 figures in New York
After working for 20 years, with a masters degree, a NY teacher will just start breaking 6 figures near the end of their career.
And the median wage in the US is around 30-40K.
And most people in the US lack a bachelor's degree. In terms of median wages for bachelor's degrees, teachers are near the bottom.
Think Different!

Insofar as there is nothing nefarious about lobbying period.
The right to lobby is in the Constitution.
Wow, I am out-retroed. I tip my hat to you, sir.
Worse, you admitted to having an anthropology degree.
So I have to deal with a woman who is genetically predisposed to act like me? No thanks, I couldn't deal with a lifetime of myself.
Is that solely a US thing?
