(whereas before worm writers had nothing but an assumption).
They always knew that the government and MS didn't like worms. I mean, come on.
And I'm sick of hearing people insist that it's "rebellion". What it is is lack of empathy; there's something wrong with these kids, they get pleasure from causing other people pain.
Wow, how's that for not reading the article? The blurb even says it has his comments on the "overpopulation" argument.
Uh, maybe some of us have read it and find the arguments unconvincing? Don't just uncritically accept everything you read.
He doesn't even address the overpopulation argument, he just points out what we lose from natural death. And he doesn't say where he gets his figures. When most people die we don't lose any valuable information. And he seems to assume that the person's assets are thrown into the furnace upon death.
It seems to me that companies ought to have a right to exchange services with people on terms that both sides agree on. If Google wants to offer a gig of email in exchange for being able to stick context-oriented ads in it, they ought to be able to do so -- if you don't like it, buy your own damn email.
Yeah, but you're not the only person involved. What about the person you're writing to? I'm not signing up for gmail, and I don't really want google to read anything I send to a gmail user.
But 3DRealms has had plenty of failures. Blizzard, as far as I know, has had major successes both commercially and artistically with all their releases.
It would be interesting to see which will release a dud first, Pixar or Blizzard...

Yeah, you see, that's not part of the animation. "Animation" refers to the actual visual rendering.
And I've always found it fascinating that a country with such supposedly stupid citizens has been at the forefront of scientific research for the past 60 years. Funny, huh?

blow away anything done in the US to date.
Uhhhh....huh? I just watched that trailer, it looks pretty cool, I definitely want to see it, but nothing in it "blows away" the US stuff. What part of the animation are you talking about that hasn't been done here?
There have been very, very few. Francois Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451 for example. 2001 for another (even if you don't consider it "based" on the 2001 novel, it was based on the short story "The Sentinel").
And actually I don't even mind them changing the story, as long as they do a good job. Like I think Blade Runner is an amazing movie. Yes, it's a completely different story than the book, but I don't think the story in the book would have translated into a movie that well. But the recent fad to turn brilliant, intellectual science fiction novels into action movies is just depressing.
Not to keep defending Bush (who has many policies I disagree with). But my understanding is that the US is letting China handle that one for the moment.
And China isn't doing that great a job. But of course Bush refused to allow the UN to handle Iraq.
Do you WANT the US to start ANOTHER war right now (when we're ALREADY heavily extended in Iraq), against a country that, if it DOES have a nuke, can use missiles we KNOW it has (because it announced them) to drop it in the northwest US or (if the new model works) anywhere on the US except maybe the Florida keys, just so you can perceive Bush as acting consistently?
In other words, we should avoid dealing with North Korea out of fear. By attacking Iraq but backing down from North Korea we've sent a signal to the world that if they don't want us to fight with them they should deliver nuclear weapons.
Why don't you bring that one up again after we're done with Iraq?
Because by that time North Korea may have a working nuclear device. The axis of evil speech, the attack on Iraq, and the fact that we haven't found any WMD were in conjunction a disaster. We come off looking like aggressors, and we spooked North Korea into resuming it's nuclear program. If you think this equals the "respect" of the rest of the world, you're delusional.
The world is now on notice that if knock the chip off the shoulder of the USA you just MIGHT find it accepts the challenge and you get pounded into the ground
That's just idiotic. North Korea treats its people every bit as badly as Iraq, they openly declared they were developing nuclear weapons and might use them on the US, and all you get from the White House is a whole lot of cowardice on that front.
I know it's still a long way off from a Matrix-esque scenario (or better yet, Skynet), but this has me a little jumpy. Not because we are doing amazing things with AI these days, but because we keep advancing it in a totally carefree manner.
Indeed. At this pace, in a few years no flag will be safe from robot capturers!
I read Maxim magazine.
Whoa, they have articles??
Uhhhh...what?

Wow, the record industry tries to hinder CD burning?! Stop the presses! Better add that to the list.
Hmm, does that work on minis without on board computers?
Well if you own the physical ROM then you have a de facto license to use it. Using an emulator in that way wouldn't be illegal.
MAME user: I wish the law wasn't so ambiguous about playing ROMs.
The Law: It's illegal unless you have the copyright owner's permission.
MAME user: like I said, so vague...
Copyright holders: Don't do it. We don't give permission.
MAME user: can't I get a clear answer out of either of you two?!
Ree-la-tion-ship? What kind of crazy, moon-man language is that?
AKA libertarianism to the point of idiocy. The market can't solve every problem, and we shouldn't rely on it to.

it's authoritarian (yes they are still communist) government.
They're not really communist anymore. Contrary to widespread belief (and desperate hope) here, a country can be both capitalist and authoritarian.

AKA Brave New Fahrenheit 1984.
Oh yeah? Anyone want to take bets that there will be a novelization based on the movie, i.e. an I, Robot written by someone other than Asimov?
My money is on the upcoming "Fahrenheit 451" directed by Frank Darabont.
Mine isn't. What the hell's the point of making a new Fahrenheit 451? I mean, I like to think Truffaut's version was pretty damn adequate.
He also says there's a remake of Fahrenheit 451. WHY? Damn Hollywood.
Considering what they did to I, Robot, I've got a bad feeling about this.
Oh come on, it's not really the University's job to teach something to its students, is it?!
