2% chance of it being random? That's not exactly thin. Though of course every slashdot story has to end with someone casting doubt on the story subject, since everyone seems deathly afraid to be thought of as gullible or naive... --
While a neat idea, I don't think this is as trivial as the poster makes it out to be. What do you think?
What do I think? Hmmmm...I think it IS that trivial..
That aside, I wouldn't mind finding the answer myself, though openwindows on my ancient sparc probably wouldn't go much faster...
Actually, if anyone has ANY information on what PC hardware will work on a Sun, I'd be interested to see it. I haven't been able to find much online, such as PC/Sun compatibility lists... --
I didn't find commander keen particularly that thrilling. While it may have been one of the better PC sidescrollers, like you said, there wasn't much competition, and like most shareware games the graphics were behind the commercial efforts at the time. --
I seem to remember a lot of people saying that Windows could never give the performance that DOS could when it comes to writing games - too much OS between the game and the hardware.
How do you know they weren't right? Nobody develops for DOS anymore, so we can't really compare those versions side by side. --
This was the situation years ago in the dos games market, and it worked out pretty well. We got all manner of good games, like Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D.. but would the same rules apply in the Linux games market?
Actually, I don't think it worked that well. Most shareware games weren't very good, with a few exceptions. Actually 2 exceptions: Doom and Wolfenstein. Can't think of any others.

I guess I've been reading too many Aubrey/Maturin novels lately but I pondered that for a couple of minutes before realizing it wasn't meant to be a nautical metaphor...
Why not MS-DOS? I'm serious, 6.2 was relatively mature by microsoft standards, and god knows there are enough programs that run on it. Would be fun to be able to play wasteland or ultima 5 while you're travelling... --
The problem was caused by the government-imposed rate-cap which prevented private electric companies from raising rates to keep supply and demand at equilibrium
The "funny thing" is that was supported by the power companies, who thought it would be a great way to gouge their customers. I hate to burst your conspiratorial little bubble, but the power outages were caused by one simple thing: nobody had expected electricity usage to go that high. That's it. Plants and infrastructure take so long to build you have to plan years in advance. They planned incorrectly. --
Nope, Clinton has beat Nixon by a long shot. Nixon had one screw up -- a big screw up, but just one. With Clinton, it's just one big long string of corruption.
Actually, Nixon had a very nasty reputation before Watergate. He was one of the most brutal of the McCarthy witchhunters, ran his early campaigns basically on character assassination, became involved in very shady campaign fundraising, lied to Congress about attacks on Cambodia, evaded taxes, used the presidency to line his pockets, and formed the shadow organization that conducted the illegal breakins in the Ellsworth case, and eventually Watergate. And the Watergate affair wasn't just one big screw up; it was a series of screw ups that were each far worse than anything Clinton did. Altering tapes, interfering with the FBI investigation, ignoring subpoenas; the list goes on and on.
And what did Clinton do? Was semi-involved in a fraudulent land deal, the investigation of which found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing. Every time an accusation came up, Republicans started snivelling about how they wanted an independent counsel. And after investigations into travelgate, Whitewater, filegate, and alleged fundraising abuses, after millions of dollars, what did they find? He lied about sex. That's it. But the right is so consumed with hatred of the man, that they've managed to paint him as some sort of Democratic Nixon. They're scared of him because he's smarter than them, he's more charismatic than them, and he was an effective president. That scares the hell out of them, so they launched an 8 year smear campaign, which the media jumped on.
And, like many Democrats, I didn't really approve of some of those last pardons, but I didn't approve of Bush's pardon of the Iran-Contra conspirators either. But I can live with it. --
He didn't just throw them together for the fun of it; if I recall correctly, he needed to have enough episodes to qualify for syndication. So the choice was either all of them, or none; I'm one of the few anime fans who appreciate what he did. Anyway, it's not like they changed much in the series, they could (and did) stand on their own. My favorite was the third one; I'd give just about anything for them to bring Mospeada to either DVD or tape or VCD or whatever (with English subtitles or dubs I mean). --
The underwater touchscreen is the first of its kind. It's made up of an infrared beam grid mounted onto the tank window and a monitor screen that faces the dolphins.
Maybe a dolphin is posting to this thread. No mouse mentioned, but slashdot does load (rather badly) on lynx...

Or, does anyone know any programs I would be able to use to record the one tommorow?
How about a VCR? It will be on C-SPAN tomorrow at that time.

Cool Case

· Score: 5
But let's put that aside for a minute here. Why do you need this kind of case? The free market is a wonderful thing for scientific innovation, but this is the sort of
thing that makes me think back to that old notion in Marx that a capitalist economy tends to produce unnecessary stuff, waste, and duplicate efforts.
Those communists are just jealous that they never came up with the amazing innovations we did, like beer helmets, pet rocks, pez dispensers, and sourceless operating systems...

I don't know what kind of lifespan this idea would have; I mean, we're already moving to DVDs, and will presumably get to directly transferred digital in the next few years, so I don't know who would invest in this. --
Americans care nothing of others - its a engrained character flaw (and encouraged by your Corporate Government because it serves them) - you simply cannot see the 'other arguments' because you are conditioned to only care for yourself.
It's the philosophical basis for our culture, and while it may cause problems, in many of our minds it's worth it.

Some of the mods are really new games in my opinion; even if you discount them, Gunman Chronicles is based on the Half-life engine, and I think it qualifies as a new game. --
Do you have ANY idea what deployment costs are in rural areas for things like cable and DSL
It's not just rural areas. New York City, economic capital of the world, most populated city in the US, etc., still hasn't gotten full broadband penetration. There are places in the outer boroughs which still don't have DSL; keep in mind these areas have several million people living in a geographically miniscule space; a few square miles. --
Actually he just said "clients". From the way the rest of his post is worded, I'd assume they aren't the same clients as his company has.

we would need to say goodbye to slashdot and freshmeat!
Might be a downside though.

napster is rightfully shifting blame for piracy away from the technology and towards the pirates- the users.
Aye matey, them pirates be scurvy dogs.

Is it just me or did anyone else have to reread that story title before it sunk in. Maybe it's the capitalized On...
