    On slashdot IT is never the bad guy. It's always some mythical manager who must have ordered them to do what they do. Why can nobody here ever believe a programmer/engineer/IT guy was incompetent?

    Social Security number use did not become ubiquitous because of a nefarious government scheme to destroy your independence, it became ubiquitous because it is AMAZINGLY useful to have a unique, individual number for everyone, since there are at least a thousand other people who have the same name as you, and a sizable chunk of the United States populace changes their name at some point in their lives.

    I'd rather just file a W-2 and say I made $20K/year and write the rest off through my corporation as an expense.

    The money you pay yourself through your corporation is income, and you must pay income tax on it. If you're talking about paying your mortgage, food bills, entertainment, etc. through your corporation, you're committing tax fraud and the IRS will eventually likely catch you.

    Also pension actuaries have to learn a lot about the Internal Revenue Code and ERISA, both extremely challenging, extremely convoluted bodies of law; it's not all just numbers.

    Dude, you seriously have to move. Don't judge the entire country by your yokel neighbors. Then there's the whole typical US rationality (which is probably more global, but what do I know?) of things like "I can't imagine a world where god doesn't exist; therefore, god exists".

    Upconverting can't magically add more detail. There is a very noticeable difference between a blu-ray and upconverted DVD. And honestly, now that blu-ray players are under $100, and movies tend to be around $20, the price issue isn't that important anymore.

    When it is a method by which your wife was killed after you researched this, then yes, yes it is reasonable to suspect you of murder. Are you seriously saying that it's unreasonable? I mean I can't even fathom how your thought processes work here.

    You're sure about that? If you follow search-and-seizure cases in the Supreme Court it's a mixed bag, sometimes they side with the police, sometimes with the defendants.
