A) Legally, the modem and router are their property. they don't stop you from using your own router, but the one they give you is a lease.
B) The contract you sign when you sign up for Verizon has states that they can access your equipment under certain circumstances.
one of (several) such sections of verizon's TOS: Monitoring of Network Performance by Verizon. Verizon automatically measures and monitors network performance and the performance of your Internet connection and our network. We also will access and record information about your computer and Equipment's profile and settings and the installation of software we provide. You agree to permit us to access your computer and Equipment and to monitor, adjust and record such data, profiles and settings for the purpose of providing the Service. You also consent to Verizon's monitoring of your Internet connection and network performance, and to our accessing and adjusting your computer settings, as they relate to the Service, Software, or other services, which we may offer from time to time. We do not share information collected for the purpose of network or computer performance monitoring or for providing customized technical support outside of Verizon or its authorized vendors, contractors and agents.
did you design those condensers? do research on improvements? market them? package/ship them? oversee the entire operation to ensure that they were being sold at approx. the same rate at which they were built, and that you always were supplied with the raw materials / tools necessary to build them? own the building you produced them in? generate all the energy needed to create them?
but no, you just shit out those $5000 condensers on your own right? no costs to the company but your working wage.
no it's the version with a better task bar, more hardware support, better gaming, and that removes the damn application from memory after you've closed all windows related to it
linux cannot replace windows until you can install any common program with a few clicks of the mouse (no compiling, no searching apt-get for the right repository, no manual dependence checking)
It would also help if linux had real wireless support, not hacks like ndis wrapper
probably the fact that microsoft has said that you can't switch directly from the RC to the full version, same as you can't go directly from the beta to the RC.
what's illegal about downloading a copy of a tv show which is broadcast (ie. one you could pick up with an antenna)? downloading a dvd rip would be one thing, but If I use my computer to record something freely available, why can't I throw it up in a torrent? I'm not going to get sued for recording on vhs and giving that tape to a few buddies.
True; but you sleep well because you know that only your neighbors are likely to see that your new Ferrari is parked in your driveway. If, however, that is announced to the entire planet, including thousands of car thiefs in your area, I'm sure you'd be not sleeping at all.
Or, I could realized that as my ferrari is being displayed in public view, and is likely to be seen by someone who wishes to steal it, regardless of whether or not an old image on the internet may or may not contain it.
While your example of a conversation may not be black and white, this is. As you say, you can have a private conversation in public. You cannot, however, have a private display in public. If it's out there, it's out there.
I don't believe the google streetview cars are equipped with zoom lenses that search for windows to peer inside. They're cars that drives and takes relatively low quality, panoramic pictures constantly. It does this on public roads (except for 1 incident I've heard of). it is no different than someone walking down the street.
your average joe will probably never switch to linux, unless microsot + apple both disappear.
most people just don't give a shit, and even if they did, are not tech savvy enough to use anything that doesn't "just work".
and yes, windows does "just work". through windows update microsoft has gotten almost as good as mac at finding at least generic working drivers. 90% of all users will be able to work just fine with default settings, and 99% of all users will never need or want to touch the command line, unless they call tech support and are asked to run something trivial like ipconfig.
yes, ubuntu has gotten better about this, but it still just isn't there.
Windows 7 really is less resource intensive. my anecdote:
* dell optiplex gx260
* p4 (no HT) 2.4GHz
* 1GB ram
* nvidia geforce 2mx (aw yeah. had to use xp drivers, and it's only dx7 so it bluescreens if I try to do a system rating... but it works:P)
no, I can't do aero, but it's good enough, runs as fast as xp for all the common tasks i throw at is (rdp, web browsing, office apps, etc)
because he could never make the extremely common mistake in thinking that since verizon supplied him with a router, it must belong to him.
so I guess you missed the part where he said in the *first sentence*: "I have Verizon FIOS at home and my Verizon-supplied Actiontec router [...]"
Answer: it is. stfu.

so many abbreviations! :P

if only "playing games with currency" wasn't the foundation of a successful economy I'd agree with you.
Microsoft turned $17.6 Billion in profit in 2009, they are 35th on the fortune 500. I think they know how to make a buck.
drivers license numbers are not standardized from state to state, whereas social security is.

I have a 2 year old "vista capable" laptop. I scored a 3.1 system rating in vista/win 7 RC.
I am currently at ~400/895MBMB ram usage usage with firefox, office 2007, pidgin and utorrent open.
Oh, and I'm running aero, and it's STILL as fast as the *fresh* xp sp3 install on my other partition.
since dapper drake came out, I've been trying to order cds roughly every 6 months. I have yet to receive one.
But the beauty of windows mobile is that you do not have to go through an app store, installing apps on your own does not void the warrenty.
This is just guidelines for what MS will allow in the store, and it makes sense that they would not like to advertise competing products.

I assume you still use firefox 1 then?

You're ignoring the point. This is not an invasion of privacy. Everything is out there in public view.
If I post pictures of myself on facebook, Those are in public view, and I can't bitch about privacy.
If I park my car in the driveway, it is in public view, and I can't bitch about privacy.

the difference is, with software, the lion's share of your purchase goes to the creator of that software, not a bunch of lawyers :P
I believe most artists get something like 5-10% of each cd sale, with the riaa getting something like 60%.
Musicians have and will always make their money through live perfomances.
possibly, I just noticed today that technet now has a firefox plugin for WGA, letting you use firefox instead of IE.
that would be a problem with you local team. not the organization.

also: win 7 can use any vista driver.
New and inventive ways to spend our tax dollars is what we need to get out of a recession/depression. see: FDR, The Works Project Administration, etc.
plus, better our tax dollars go to directly helping taxpaying citizens, rather than funding a war which pretty much no-one supports.
