This is the scientific version of the same calculator, complete with RPN, a stack, plotting functions, matrix functions. I've had mine since 1991. It's a shame they tried to replace it with one that is crap.
The non-technical user is a creature of habbit. I've seen them in a confused panic... when the ribbon came to office you'd thing the world was ending
I will admit, I still haven't figured out the ribbon thing. I've used the hell out of Office 2003 and before. But, every time I sit down to a machine with 2007 or later I get frustrated and either go back to a machine with an earlier version I get frustrated and just install OpenOffice.
I am a "quick key" user (or keyboard short cuts) and none of them work the way I was used to in earlier versions of Word, so I have to "Icon Hunt" which is such an unproductive feeling.
Anyway, my point is even technical users are creatures of habit and can feel this frustration. In the case of the above posting, I think the real problem won't be non-techies (who are simply directed to the icon and application they need), it'll be the techies who want root access (and won't be granted it) and want to install every social networking and widget app known to man. They're so used to all the little windows hacks (that they never needed in the first place) and will get so frustrated they can't hack their system they'll stand around at the printer and bitch and moan about how "they can't do anything they used to."
Unless he has a 4-year degree in engineering, he is not an engineer. Its very unfortunate that the job title "engineer" is so commonly misused in the US.
This is definitely part of it. The other part of it is that Universities in the last 10 years have turned into "quota factories"... just pumping out more and more engineers to "fill the need." It's much less prestigious to be called "Engineer" nowadays.
Keep the specifications as they are. Fix all the current issues and make a SOLID product. It's good, but could be a LOT more stable and tight. When that's done, then go for the big merge and add new features.
but in all "fairness" if someone had the idea first then why shouldn't they get some benefit from it ?
Just because someone had the idea first, doesn't mean that someone else won't have the idea second (and independently). If the second person can make it work and actually demonstrate it, then aren't they more worthy of the coveted patent?
That all assuming of course that the concept of patents is not total bullshit, which one could make a strong argument for I'd guess.
I loaded that in my iPad. Rather than seeing the blue no-Flash cube on that site, I saw a man stretching his anus open to remarkable proportions. It must be that update to iOS 3.1.3 I did the other day.
It doesn't matter. If you promise people you won't sue over something, you can't later change your mind and sue them. It's called promissory estoppel. If they tried, any competent judge would throw the case out before trial.
They might 'win' if they have more $$ to shift to their legal team than the opposition. There's suing to win, and suing to sue. I think the latter can be just as damning as the former. In the past, MS (and other companies) have sued just to cause their competition trouble. Also, common sense isn't always 'common' and not all judges are 'competent' or 'objective' in every way.
In summary, if you trust them go ahead and use it. My advise would be to tread carefully.
... at the beginning was like this. Very indie. This was when they made their best stuff IMHO.
I hope to see a lot more good indie games. These $20million blowout games lately have been terrible (most anyway). Sometimes a simple game is more fun, such as:
This gets my vote for "Most Uniformed Post of The Day".
Very little programming effort.... yeah just rewrite it all. If you don't understand why, quit commenting.
Mostly art and modelling.... here's a hint --- modern games.... MOST of the cost goes into the art. Teams have a lot more artists than coders.
What part of the words "expansion pack" don't you understand? I'm not saying they would reprogram the whole thing. Some other guys already did the first episode of Doom1 as an expansion pack:
They didn't have significant programming effort to do that - and that's ALL I said. I said NOTHING about how much effort the art and modelling would be. Quit trying to read what's not there.
Your post, however, must have seemed off even to you given that you had to post it anonymously.
I was hoping they'd port full doom1 and doom2 to the doom3 engine as an expansion pack. There'd be little programming effort there, mostly art and modelling. If they went for a more modernized game, with a similar feel and speed of the old one people would line up for it for sure. Well... I'd buy it.
At least they gave it a try. It can be good to shake things up once in a while. Perhaps some of the maintainers will take note of some of the subtleties.
I'm not as smart as most of you slashdotters, but this seems smart in that they can write their own security updates with Linux, as opposed to waiting for Microsoft to fix them.
Yes, but in order to do that they're also creating a budget to support the programmers doing that.
Which they could get from the money they save in MS licensing fees and dealing with after the fact security problems. Your point is valid in that I highly doubt it's going to save them any money at this time. Who knows, it may cost them more. However, they did announce they are working on Chrome OS and could use such work to add to that and Android.
Horrible ads? Adblock/Flashblock. Flash cookies? Delete them. What people care about is, erm, having a Linux version of Flash that isn't a horrible smoking pile of excrement, performance- and stability-wise.
Hit the nail on the head! I wish I had mod points for you:)

The term you're looking for is "Sneaker Net"

Speakeasy is a pretty damn solid name actually!
You are comparing Apples to Oranges.
Is that similar to comparing Apples to Windows?
They manage to scale the frickin' lasers down to frickin' shark-size.
They can just manufacture massive sharks in the meantime! With a few camera tricks no one will notice ...

I believe this to be the case by far.
Interesting.

It's progress if the device fits in your pocket and runs on batteries. I wonder if this thing will run on Android when it comes out?

I think you're right. Google and spell check makes us lazy.
Probably windows in a VM I would assume.
