Look, you fucking idiot, your article says they lost $27 million (3 billion Yen) for the first half of the year. Do you know what a half of a year is? It's two quarters. For the first quarter ending June 30, they made 11.45 billion Yen (~$105 million) in profits. That means that in the second quarter, which ended September 30, THEY LOST 14.45 BILLION YEN (~$132 MILLION). Do you understand simple math? Q1 + Q2 = H1. (+11.45 billion) + (-14.45 billion) = -3 billion. Is it sinking in yet? If not, you're beyond hope, you imbecile.

Again, a recap. Microsoft: Making money. Sony: Making money. Sega: Making money. Nintendo: Losing money.

Hope you realize how stupid you sound. I said in the most recent quarter, and you're trying to bring up the last six months. Let me put it in real simple terms for you: When you lose $25 million for the first half-year, after gaining $105 million for the first quarter...do you see where this is going yet? That's right, IN THE MOST RECENT QUARTER, they lost $130 million.

Now, that expected $500 million profit for the year sounds dandy and all, but they didn't expect a loss for the first half, either. So basically, their expectations don't mean dick to anybody but Nintendo fanboys. Did they expect that they'd have to stop making GameCubes already, too? Sounds like the world is one big surprise for Nintendo and their crack team of forecasters.

And Sony? They're a profitable company, they made about $302 million this past quarter. Microsoft made money, too. Hell, even Sega made money -- that should be a big hint for The Little N.

Hahahaha! You're calling for the demise of the Xbox because of this article? Let's break down these numbers. According to Nintendo, this quadrupling took them to 61,000 for the week, after averaging 15,000 per week for the rest of the month and going all the way back into August. Catch the significance of that? That means that the Cube was heading to a 60,000 sales month in the US, the lowest in its history. Even with the increase for the week, that means that they're looking at monthly sales of less than 110,000 (3 * 15000 + 61000). The Xbox has had exactly one month, which happened over a year ago, where it had sales within even 10,000 units of such a low number.

    Get some perspective already.

The correct figure for Nintendo was 800,000 units shipped worldwide. Someone, somewhere made typo. And that false number is still floating all over the net.

Ummm, no. You can go read Nintendo's own financial report on their website for proof. It's 80,000, period. http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/030805e.pdf
I'm sure you'll believe Nintendo's own site, along with BBC, Reuters, Associated Press, Forbes, The Financial Times, CNN, and Money, who all state "80,000" over any Nintendo fanboy site claiming 800,000, right?

  11. Sorry, but this is a very poor article on Worldwide Console Hardware Sales Compared · · Score: -1, Troll

First off, these numbers don't measure popularity, they measure how many have been shipped to retailers. You need to know how many were sold to customers to have an idea of popularity.

Secondly, they're not very recent. The Xbox numbers are current as of June 30, while the GameCube numbers are current as of March 31. At least the author could've updated the GameCube numbers to their June 30 levels of 9,630,000. (Yes, they only shipped 80,000 units worldwide between April 1 and June 30).

Seriously, this article isn't anything to get excited about. The same info has already been available for months now in each company's public financial reports, and in Nintendo's case, is more current than what's in this article.

I think this goes some way to explaining the Xbox's lacklustre sales in the other two big video game territories (Europe and Asia: just behind the GC in Europe, behind just about everything in Asia). Different cultures prefer different things, and the Xbox is very much a product of the US (the PS2 did well everywhere because it was out there first, and had an installed base of existing Playstation owners to sell into).

You gotta update that theory. The GameCube is getting blown away in the European region by both the PS2 and the Xbox. They're getting beaten much worse there than they are in the US.

Actually, none of those games you listed were system sellers for the GameCube. For all practical purposes, about the only people buying those games were Nintendo fans, and they've owned the GameCube since it came out. That's why even when all those games appeared, GameCube sales still didn't surpass Xbox sales for the particular month in North America or Europe that they came out.

But that's _now_. Earlier in their lifespans, both cost more to make than what they were sold for. So, nobody's going to complain about it when all the console makers do it.
