  1. SCSI Emulation? on Linux 2.4.15 is out; Linux 2.5.0 has also begun. · · Score: 2

It's actually not emulation, but transport. ATAPI is actually SCSI, implemented on top of IDE. Remember those parallel port zip drives? They are SCSI over parallel port. SCSI "emulation" simply lets userspace apps talk to the devices in their "native" tounge.

In the case of the Linux kernel we have maintaince and development.

Major changes in structure and systems are made in development, with drivers added as well.
    Maintaince is bugfixes and drivers.
    That's it.
The reason that 2.5 didn't open sooner is that the 2.4 series was not stable enough for the maintainer's taste. Now that it is, active development (rather than maintaince) will continue.

It's nice to have a network like this where you can safely idle in the channel at work without having to worry about getting an invite to #goatse.cx just as your boss wanders by.

Steven Poldge (spelled wrong? if so, sorry Steve.) of Epic Games programmed the original Quake bot, the reaper bot. It was a closed source project, and expressly forbid the redistribution of his bot or source code.
This didn't stop people from hacking and re-releasing, especially to fix the infamous QC1.01 "disapearing weapon" bug, but technically, Steven could have sued - and he would have won.
This doesn't mean that in the privacy of your own home you couldn't hack the reaper - or anything else for that matter - yourself and use it for your own personal use, but that dosn't give you the right to distribute it.

Prior to the release of Potato, (the current stable) Potato was testing, Slink was stable, and Sid was unstable - woody hadn't been assigned yet.
you say Using woody in a mission critical server environment would be bad.
Where are you getting this from? Woody testing is usually VERY stable, as all packages that are in woody have been in sid for several weeks prior to their introduction into woody!
Also, anyone running Debian in a "mission critical server environment" - Or ANY OTHER operating system - should be subscribed to the appropriate mailing lists.
Problems in testing are usually found immediately, and patches released - upgrading involves ONE command as root - Compare that to the fiasco that was Redhat 6.0

There has been discussion of this within the debian developers.
It was pointed out that this is actually unnecessary, as most people will only need CD1 and/or CD2 when woody is finally released.
My primary workstation is running woody, and required a TOTAL of 500mb in the way of packages from debian.org - The extras on the other discs are things like alternate daemons (eg, you have your choice of 3+ sendmail replacements, 2 versions of telnetd, etc.) and are not needed for the typical home user.

Encoding my discs with lame 3.89, vbr (quality set to 1) and joint stereo gives me sound that I can not distinguish from the original - the reason I can't distinguish the joint stereo from real is because I have a subwoofer + satellite setup. JS encodes the bass region as mono. Controlled lab tests show that lame 3.8x+ encodings in this manner are so close to original quality that it requires an ear better than the average sound technician to tell the difference.
Also, just for reference, my VBRs hit 320 when they have to. Weezer's 'Island in the Sun' has an average bitrate of 196kbps on my system.
