    its nice and I played with it for a while but went back to netscape(mozilla 1.0)

    why ? because I use that on all platforms and its nice to have the same gui everywhere win32 mac and unix

    what would be the killer feature ?

    well for me being able to use the command line to read emails via ssh
    (yes I know it can do portf/X11 forwarding but I dont want that e.g. i'm on another box and useing putty I just want to check my mails
    haveing seperate pine install and config is a pain a simple program that picked up evo's prefs would be good )

    fonts for fsck's are simple
    find a nice postscript font and stick with it

    you proberly thinking about websites that are stupid

    X is slow : its not you have not changed the defaults that are made to work with all possible and not speed

    people cant use and editor : the stupid rant about people who cant follow instructions about editing a file

    try giveing intructions on what you have to do to change config in windows e.g. right click on network neibourhood properties ........
    compared to open the text file /etc/fstab and add the following text .....

    this is so off base its amazing

    then he goes and uses mozilla but fails to protect his machine with any sort of firewall when he connects with Microsoft Windows XP

    just code it in C and then use gcc targeted at mmix to see the assembly and compare them with what he wrote(some of the time it wont be the same if ever because of register alocation but you get the point)

    yes google is your friend
    but please people just use unicode for everything

    you just have to have an editor that will do unicode and have your fonts set up right (since their is no free unicode set that would be hard) I use xemacs so what do I know

    I would like to see one of these give a specFp result

    I bet that it could cane IA64 in the specInt but the real test would be floating point and to do IEEE754 properly you need 64 bit otherwise you end up emulating it

    now we have of the true 64 bit microproessor's

    Sun Microsystems - Processors which are a Sparc

    PA-risc which is MIPS like

    and MIPS64 which I like alot

    of the ports linux to 64bit for linux HPPA and the oldie but goodie linux Alpha and linux sprac64 of course not forgeting linux for IA64 but unfortunately the linux for MIPS is not 64bit so if ever their was a challenge as linux is mostly 64bit clean its to do a MIPS64 port

    oh and intel wont like to say linux for hammer which is not real 64bit just has some 64bit registers tacked on (but hey you can do fp right ;-)

    yeah great they did an installer and learnt how to compile src rpm's to what they like but I have yet to see them actually upgrade anything before redhat has put its fix's in

    e.g. lets see them actually use gcc3.1 before redhat

    anyone who has anything to do with a standards body nowadays know's that people try and hijack standards so their tech/patent gets into it

    this way if you implement the standard you have to pay

    you can't have an opensource MPEG 4 without paying 3million bucks when you distribute it and they call that a standard

    SyncML that works on phones and soon palms that is a nice stable platform for doing this the only problem would be patents but since they dont have any filed in taiwan it does not really matter

    linux will win

    try compileing lmbench and see the results

    the whole driver issue in OS X makes it great for hotswap devices such as USB

    BUT if you have a decent compiled linux kernel and know your hardware then it will beat it every time
    (plus ext2 beats the pant off apples UFS)

    maybe this will be actually useful but I dont see what they are useing as the windowing system

    also they use the Toshiba TX3911 a MIPS but they clock it real low

    (the tx39XX was the part done for sony EE was it not ?)

    and anyone who has actually tried to use a sharp zarus when away from the office knows its not much use as the power dies because of the LCD the same is true of fancy CE machines
    (when will people learn that haveing your contacts in colour is pointless if you cant see it better to go with greyscale and have a couple of extra hours of use)

    they claim USB & networking is this built in ?
    (I dont remember tosh doing a mips part with eth MAC on chip)

    my hopes are high that this will work I am curious to how they get input and what they use to display CJK chars

    I know its evil but set up a rshd on all these and then you dont have these problems

    unix solved this a long time ago with nfs or rsh

    lost of people do rshd and I suspect that you could get a sshd for win32 as well

    I use OS X as my client now

    why ?
    it has a port of X (windows)
    and it has THE best terminal app IMHO

    other things are that fonts are far nicer than anything that I could get under X even when using the sgi font server

    oh and ssh is in the box (alright then a update )

    it's more a case of FAB's

    Intel have the worst design in terms of cost but this is offset by their buckload's of money and moveing production lines to a .13 process
    (also getting SA1110 so that they can run that on the old ones and keep them profitable)

    AMD has got out of the game partnering with UMC

    SUN used TI and fujitsu and fujitsu are out of the game now

    HPaq use Intel and are out of the game

    SGI use TSMC now......

    IBM are so ahead of the game it's scary just as well they only intrested in Power (-;

    Moto are long since dead and are useing TSMC

    so it comes down to....

    Intel vs IBM
    and maybe SGI & AMD depending on how things work out

    so in terms of what counts its the northbridge and CA seems to have done well custermising Intels referance IA64 northbridge to handle 128 procs HP has done its own and thats whats going into that big Linux machine they sold

    oh yeah

    Redhat layed of a bunch of people today dont see that in the news

    who cares if you cant actually use the damn thing

    mask costs are about $2million for .13 or .9

    so its not the same and relatively few people can afford it

    unless you share and then you can only really get engineering samples

    AMD made the smart move of UMC and TSMC are just ARM/MIPS prod lines with some custom phillips stuff

    IBM, Intel and maybe TI are the only people who can aford to do this anymore....

    if you wanted me to put money on it I would bet IBM and the rest wither (yes Intel will outsource eventually)
