that was possibly google's andy rubin saying the data was 'very important' to them? And the data being referred to was the locations of wifi towers, NOT the locations of their customers.
In fact, anyone who uses a cell phone, and in particular if they have location based services turned on, are already sending their location to any number of places.
Its also anonymized. People talk about situations where you may still be able to be identified, but the chances are so remote that there are much bigger things to worry about in life.
sure, location based services somehow enables apple to GUESS your location without your phone telling them anything?!
The phone most definitely transmits your location to Apple, otherwise how would location based services even work? In order for apple to provide ads targetted to your location, they need to know where you are. There are more uses for location services too, all of them requiring the server to know your location.
I have no problem with this - the data is anonymized and I've yet to hear of even 1 case of the data being misused.
what iOS does after this update is what Android has done all along.
1. location updates only stored temporarily. 2. location updates not stored at all when 'location services' disabled (MENU > Location and Security > Use Wireless Networks)
Data sent to google is anonymized. I assume Apple does the same.
Both of them collect the data to build a database of open wifi locations.
No reason to hate either side now...unless you want to hate both, because they're both much the same.

The other difference is that Google has been upfront about what they do with location data. They said all along that they use this data and that it is anonymized. Apple seem to have come clean now so its all good.

last I checked MSI files are installers, meaning the user still has to install it once this file is on their pc.
On linux you could store your program in a self-hosted repository and each client can just sudo apt-get install programname
Installation all handled automatically so the user just has to click on the icon in the menu and run it. Software updates can happen without the user even knowing.
This can be done for ALL linux desktop software, not just the ones you create...
I believe there are ways to do this on windows but its always a custom solution and not built into windows itself...
The number of PC's with linux pre-installed has nothing to do with linux or windows being easier once installed.
And its easier to copy your data + settings from one linux pc to another (just your home dir) than it is from one windows pc to another.
you're also assuming this person had windows already or even had data.
remove the legacy and the problem of having to learn something new, and linux is quite possibly easier than windows because you dont need to teach people what to do when windows dies while you're in the middle of something. the biggest problem people face is that they've already learned 1 operating system and dont have the patience to learn another one.
That's what Onlinepizza.se is for. Of course, if they somehow make it figure out what pizza you want without you having to tell it...
This got my attention.
Apple could totally pull this off, because they do this with their hardware.
See, Apple dont need to guess what you want. First, they create something pretty, and then they tell you that you want it. It works so well for them that I'm pretty sure if they did it with pizza we'd be hearing about how the iPizza (there is only 1 flavour) really is the best pizza and we dont need all the others any more.
In this case it would be as if Ford released a car that looked like the 'Vette, so close that everyone thought it was one, but with a small blue oval logo on it.
That's the issue - the galaxy S is easily distinguishable. It has rather large SAMSUNG branding - in a place where the iphone has nothing, and different shaped buttons, different coloured edging, its a completely different size, the back is shaped very different, and uses different material. Its lighter, the screen is different (they used the same glass as the iPhone 4 not the 3GS, and the iPhone 4 isn't the one they're complaining about).
They're picking on the more generic parts of the phone - ie. the basic shape - which literally is a rounded rectangle. And the edging - which is necessary in order to house the glass front etc.
But the worst part about it all is that they've ignored it until now. And they've ignored the million other apple device knock-offs that come out of china. Going after something like this only once the product is successful is just wrong, and in my opinion it is acting with evil motives, rather than what they claim.
Can catch cold and flu from idiots on the bus. Can get head ache from idiots being loud on the bus Bus's a great for general low income or tourist public transportation. They suck for anything else.
The last couple of times I was at the airport, the wi-fi was open. So it cost nothing.
really? low-income? what about people who would rather spend their money on something other than petrol and parking? I'm pretty sure my money is worth more than that, and no - I'm not low-income and I do catch the bus.
so what if they copied? its not illegal to base your product on someone else's, provided you dont ACTUALLY copy the designs.
Plenty of cars look very similar to other cars, and in some cases designers obviously take cues from others' work.
However, simply copying an idea is not illegal.
So they are not claiming copyright issues - because you cannot copyright an idea.
Notice the use of patents in this case. Software patents are the industry's replacement for copyrighting ideas. Companies use patents to stifle competition...this is just another such case.
Why should apple care if Samsung copied the overall appearance? There are still obvious differences so any copying isn't verbatim. And the sizes of the devices are different too.
Its not hurting apple's brand at all - its just a ploy to hurt their biggest competitor.
I dont find this alarming. Sure, clicking ads sounds silly, but it could also rephrased into "thinking about how to make people buy things"...which isn't a simple skill at all.
Knowing what sells and marketing it to people who will buy it is not trivial. It is a skill most IT professionals dont have. The fact that it exists on the internet is no surprise - since this has been the job of all sales people who ever lived in a capitalist society.
Find out how to do it, and there's more money in that than trying to build the next greatest invention (software or otherwise). You may succeed at engineering, but at some point you're still going to have to sell something to other people, so you cant live without people who are good at selling things.
I guess the point of the original comment was that these people's talent was being wasted, due to money being so scarce they spent all their time just trying to make ends meet. This is true to an extent, but just shows to me that the current balance in the IT industry isn't necessarily sustainable. Its unfortunate, and yes it is a shame to waste talent like this, but the problem of putting food on the table is not new - and I've done my fair share of data entry by day and programming by night (in my spare time).
I'm not sure what the solution is, but these sorts of things tend to work themselves out in time.
that's 1 license. I was thinking of small businesses and it professionals who might want to virtualize windows 7. Just thinking of a hypothetical reason for it to be in the app store.
Also, maybe windows 8 will have minimum hardware requirements that mean it wont run on some older hardware, while windows 7 will...just guessing of course.
They're not going to have legit apps on there now - its just for testing - so expect bogus entries for now as placeholders.
Win7 is still useful on windows 8 for running VMs, why not make it easier for people to get access to it?
"App Store" more than likely isn't its final name, and probably only used internally during development
Why does the title bar need to mimic other leaks, which also may or may not be bogus.
Not saying its definitely legit, but your arguments dont hold up. Nothing here to say it isn't legit. These screenshots probably weren't intended for the public.

Apple are using this data to create a database of open wifi towers. How can they do this unless they have the collected data sent to them.
I believe the data is anonymized and more than likely quite safe.
However, to claim it isn't being sent at all is naive. It may well not have been sent if the user had location based services turned off, however.
sure, location based services somehow enables apple to GUESS your location without your phone telling them anything?!

oops, double post - ignore the parent comment :(

regardless of whether its FUD or not, its been going on too long now to put the fire out.
And in the open source world, as soon as something is despised or rejected by the community at large, its days are numbered.

.NET also has a patent convenant from microsoft...not sure how watertight it is (if at all), but the fact that java is GPL is a good thing.
maybe, and they'll all be different colours, but taste the same. :P
yes but the receiver doesn't.

But i like my stubble.
Then the auto-airbrush will be applied to your image at the other end.
Good luck getting mum to install windows either.
what was your point again?
so if you went to the store and they installed linux for you, how is that different?

there is one available for galaxy tab (probably all others too) - vodafone AU is offering it free as a promotion right now.

hello? gps => satnav. not very useful EXCEPT while driving.
The wifi is essential, the 3G is icing.
3G without wifi would be ridiculous.
I'd need a price difference of less than about $60 to go for wifi+3G rather than just wifi.
