Thats a great looking shot, but doesnt XP use alpha blending to animate the fade in the menus. Correct me if im wrong but isnt alpha blending availible with the RENDER extention? If im right i wouldent mind writing a patch to implement this feature, but it seems to simple, am I missing something.
Also, doesnt dropping shadow require similar alpha blending effects to the ones mentioned above. But instead you would draw a black faded border around the window or menu and blend it with the background.
This seems to simple to be excluded, what am I missing
While I realize this release wasnt supposed to 'look' much different, they still could have taken advantage of new eyecandy availible to x and gtk2. Even kde supports tranparent menus. Besides anti-aliased fonts and alpha blending in widgets, nothing else looks much different. These hackers dont realize the reason why MS and OSX look so professional is for 2 reasons.
1.) consistancy (yes! we have metathemes, but kde and gnome themes are completly incompatible) 2.) cool little features like drop shadows on the menus and windows, alpha blending and animations on mouse over widgets or icons, faded menus, transparency, etc....
As long as there is no inovation, these desktops will never look as good. e17 has the right idea, its a shame that their development process is so slow (no one has enough time to develop on the half written libs they created).
. Great, now that their site is/. into oblivion they have an awesome chance of attracting buyers, on top of that they wont have to worry about their bandwith bills either.

Although his argument may have nothing to do with the open source license itself, that doesnt mean that he doesnt have a point. The way the GPL is designed allows and almost encourages the 'fly by the seat of your pants' coding methodoligy. People who arent selling the code dont want to bother with the boring part of design and preparation because they are doing it for fun. Its pretty clear that GPL development (in a non commercial environment) is inherantly 'fly by the seat of your pants'
ON THE OTHER HAND,
it also influences the 'product is NEVER done' system that the GPL promotes. and THATS why i love this stuff
This probibly wont help you get right to your robber, he probibly sold all your stuff. And if he was smart he probibly sold it to a used computer store that would resell it. Although most pilfers arent the smartest bunch, good luck;)
AOL has a pretty nice messaging system, its free and its fast. We shouldent use it becuase AOL users are average americans who dont have a phd in comp sci from cal tech, Common! its a nice platform for us nerds to communicate with the average joe.
And if people want to reverse engineer it, let em! are they hurting you? no! there are probibly 1000 Windows AIM users for every gaim user. Why is AOL even bothering? they have an incredible profit margin ( 15 million AOL users x $20 a month and they keep growing!) and they are trying to protect a free portion of their own system. Its plain old stupid.
Im sorry but this guy totaly crosses the line, considering that if you wanted to skip commercials you can do the same thing with a regular vcr. Why doesnt he just go after every TV recording device?
When watching live tv with tivo you cant skip commercials unless you change the channel which actually if you think about it helps the network. People will actually start watching full programs and wont channel surf, i guess this means networks have to start adding more clever means of advertising, weather its banner ads on the top of the screen or jennifer love hewit eating a bens kosher pickle (which i would love to see). Please, its people like this that stifle technology instead of protecting it!

For $1500 you cant get a decent audio system. Just a Reciever that supports all the new audio formats and standards (THX, AC3 aka Dolby Digital, and DTS) is going to run you about a thousand bucks, and then with the speakers and optional amp, its going to be alot more than that.
My current system is a Denon AVR-4800 ($1200), B&W Center Chan ($1000), B&W Reference speakers x 4 ($4400) and a B&W 800 watt powered subwoofer ($1100). The system supports all current standards, and audio formats. Its not cheap and dont expect to get a system that supports everything for cheap
Whats the probibilty for electronic voting fraud?

One of the main reasons for the massive decline in the voter turnout between the 1800s and 1900s was because of the implementation of the australian ballot.
Around 1890 the states began adopting the australian ballot. This was a government printed ballot of uniform shape and size that was cast in secret to replace the old party-printed ballot that was cast in PUBLIC!!
What happened with the old ballots? MASSIVE voter fraud. Candidates would have ghost voters and floaters (repeaters). These voters would vote hundreds of times, they inflated the voter turnout and decided who became president. Certain states and dictricts had 105% voter turnout beacuse of the fraud. In Virginia there was 147,408 people eligable to vote, but mysteriously 159,440 votes were casted...108% voter turnout.
The parties often controlled the counting of votes, and some party leaders would soak their ballots in perfume so they knew that their voters put the right ballots in the right box.
There was even a dispute over voter fraud in illinois during the JFK vs NIXON election. Nixon didnt say anything because he had commited fraud there too....
Whats my point?!? my point is, if we establish internet voting or more electronic meathods of voting. people have less of an interaction and regulation of what happens in the voting booth! who knows what kind of fraud could possibly happen, who is going to program the software? who is going to watch the network? its questions like these that worry me. maybe the best way to vote is a slight modification and standardization of the current voting means..
