So, initially... for the first year or so, hardware is sold at a loss.

yup. it's been about a year or more since the PS2 was launched, so they've pretty much recouped the cost of R&D.

sounds good to me. sony has been selling the PS One at a nifty profit at $100 for over a year now, and probably still make over $20 a pop of pure profit now that they're at $50. i can't imagine getting less than $30 profit on the PS2.... the R&D for the PS1 and 2 is done, so the cost of the chips is more or less materials, a couple of bucks at most. the PS3 is probably going to be the size of the xbox, or larger, and the need for backwards compatibility + the open space in the xbox will probably = these chips included on the motherboard of the PS3. that's my guess, anyways.

personally i'd like to see the normal form factor GBA use a slimline battery, the only reason the GBA is as thick as it is is to accomidate for those huge AA's. make a slim rechargeable battery pack and boom, you've got a GBA half the thickness and longer battery life.

if a disabled person wants front facing buttons, there's no reason he/she couldn't get his/her EE-ish friend to disassemble it, and move the shoulder buttons to a more accessable spot with some solder+wire in one of those radio shack project boxes. probably a 2 hour hack or so. parts and (probably free) labor would add maybe 20% of the cost to the box, which is a hell of a lot less upmark in price than a disabled computer system would run.

just curious, but what is an LP syndrome? louis parkinson's or somthing? my medical knowledge is weak at best. if you have a similar syndrome or somthing, get in contact, and i can probably build you somthing to use all the buttons easily for your GBA in a relatively compact case.

Since manufacturers have switched their standard warranty terms from 3 years to 1 year

agh, i'm so sick of hearing this - "back in the day", you had a 500 meg drive. in a year, there was the 1 gig drive, but you could still purchase a 500 meg drive, in two years, you might be able to find someone with a 500 meg drive in stock, and at the end of three years, the manufacturer was having trouble keeping the replacement 500 meg drives in stock. fast forward to today. the manufacturer makes a run of 250,000 120 gig drives, and cuts off the production to retool for the 200 gig drives that are slated to come out in 12 months. so say you have a 120 gb drive, and it fails at the end of two years, and you still have a 3 year warranty on it, the manufacturer now is making 380 gig drives, and the concept of making a 120 gig drive is laughable. as a result, they have to give you a new 380 gig drive at a significant loss to them. yes, they should have made a better product that should last till at least the end of the three years, but that doesn't always happen. if you had had a 1 year warranty, at least they can clean out the last of their 120 gig hard drive stock at the end of the 8th month of your ownership and replace it with a same model.

when drive size doubles every 12 months, that means size increases exponentially and at some point replacing drives with drives that are eight times larger and as a result cause you to not need to buy another drive from them when your original sized drive should have run out of space, it just becomes economical to drop the warranty down to 1 year.
