the light grey ring all the way around the tibook is black plastic covered in light grey paint. i know this because i'm looking at mine right now. there may be metal underneath at some point, but as others have pointed out, the handle puts alot of strain on the plastic, which leads to stress fractures.
yeah, but the rack mount cases are made entirely of metal. it's not the screws i'm worried about, it's the fact that they screw into a piece of plastic, which is used every time the computer is (display opened, closed). this at least triples the everyday stress on that plastic. rack mount computers don't see that kind of stress on the case/screws, as a result, it's not a problem.
this is a suggestion for the wife reading this, not a complaint about the speakers-
if he's an audiophile, he may have a predjustice against flatpanel speakers, as they are slightly "tinny" and you'd be better off getting him more "traditional" cone speakers.
of course, i love the monsoon speakers, i'd get a set if i had the $$, but my reciever/speaker setup i've been using for the last 12 years (since i was 7!) is working nicely...
an amd k6-2 300 sits in my livingroom with a crappy video capture card set to full screen as my tv. i also run VNC on it (so i can access kazaa, windows IE, ect from my mac). it's fun to watch the computer transmit video full screen every half second:)
i usually email my friends an original version of gnutella, 0.45 beta or so, and then use that to send them pictures from the dorm, mp3's of local bands, ect. aim file transfer just isn't reliable enough. set gnutella to 1 up and 1 down connection, and you're set.
maybe i should just start selling ceramic heaters in a regular hard drive profile, attach a 512mb compact flash card, and claim it's a half-gig 20,000 rpm drive. people'd probably believe me, too!
i think the $500 million dollar figure represented what they were planning to spend on promoting the xbox 3 months before and 3 months after release (6 months, expired). at this point, i think the xbox program is bleeding money.
most of their buisness comes from (about 5 billion dollars with) investments in other companies. MS office is just a constant revenue stream that looks good to stockholders.
huzzah! now when the magnetic field of earth changes polarity and it dissapears for some time, we'll all be safe wearing our Demron jackets. I'll be the first to sell Demron Letter Jackets for highschool football teams!
that's correct, but the environment would be better on the whole if 8 million teenagers didn't have to take another brief car trip on top of their 6 or 7 they make every weekend to return a couple of DVD's. things add up over time. granted, the US isn't anywhere near the top of worst polluters of carbon that mucks up the air, but i'm sure that places like LA would welcome an increase on their air quality and as a result their quality of life.
you could probably use clear nail polish on the edge of the media to keep the air from leaking in! unless, of course, all the plastic is permeable.... we'll find out soon enough, hopefully.
you're obviously unaware of the fact that near half of their rentals on the weekends (where most of their buisness is done) are by teenagers, or college students (with cars) that have little else on their agenda, and spring at the chance to use their car. all throughout high school for me involved 1, and sometimes two trips to blockbuster on the weekends for "movie night"s. we would routinely start up the car for no better reason then to drive down to block buster, and then back to the house once the selection was made. and then another trip, usually around 5pm on sunday, when the new releases were due back. that's 3 cold starts of an engine with less than 2 miles, round trip in 3 days for videos. this happened at least 3 times a month where i lived.
don't get me started on those "30 dvds in 30 days for $20 deals durring christmas...
I even got a better replacement because they were out of the drives I bought 2 1/2 yrs ago.
i think you just hit the nail on the head as to why drive makers no longer give 3 year warranties on drives. they go through inventory/technology waaaay too quickly and it's just uneconomical to give out new drives for ones that failed after 3 years.
does this occur as badly on plasma displays? what are the fundemental differences between LCD and plasma? they seem awfully similar from the outside... although one would suspect the plasma display to run more hot.
so what is the proper "Usage: diskutil [enableJournal|disableJournal] [Mount Point|Disk Identifier|Device Node]" command line to enable journaling on "Hadlock"? i already got "Macintosh" working, but journaling is much more useful on a firewire drive (Hadlock/Documents) prone to accidental unplugging...
i think they're just trying to justify the expense of 3 new tibooks (bought a little under a month before the 1ghz models came out). isn't this an apple.slashdot.org article? judging from the "aqua" look, i'd guess it was...
that's a great idea! brilliant! beats the hell out of having bright orange bibles sticking out of the sides of my tibook..... although it is nice to have the presence of god so close to my laptop and protecting it from viruses and what-have-you.
anyone else have any brilliant ideas of how to keep your tibook well ventilated? when watching divx movies & playing quake 3 i have a large 12" "shop" fan blowing across my keyboard/rear of computer to keep it from going into "high fan mode".
does anyone know of a way to wire up some case fans to a USB/firewire port as a power supply? i'd like to not have to tear apart a usb laptop light to figure it out/kill my laptop.
does it bother anyone else that the entire weight of the laptop is supported by 4 screws and a hinge that's only designed to hold the weight of a rather small (and lightweight) LCD display? i can't imagine putting the stress of a freely swinging 5.4 lb laptop on 4 tiny screws is going to do wonders for the structural ingegrity of that little plastic liner that the display attaches to.
on a side note, does this sound suspiciously like another well placed ad?
for better ventilation on my tibook, i use two of those free 2.5" x 4" bibles the guys in suits hand out just outside of campuses to get my laptop off the table about half an inch. they're free, too!:)

i'll probably get flamed for this, but i'm running
quickascii entrapment.mov
from the quickascii directory, with entrapment.mov in the same directory, and getting the following error - "quickascii: Command not found."
help?
with some translucent airtight coating
like clear nail polish?

i don't wholly oppose this, so long as gas/diesel for highway use remains cheap. you've got to do somthing to deteer those damn SUV drivers.

clear nail polish sounds like a good starter. that way, it has less mass and is less likely to destabilize the disk while it's spinning

2.5 failed?
